1. UNESCO: Rachel’s Tomb Also Belongs to Christians
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu UNESCO: Rachel’s Tomb Also Belongs to Christians

UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), which has accepted the Palestinian Authority as a state, claims Rachel’s Tomb and the Tomb of the Patriarchs [Me'arat Hamachpela, the Patriarch's Cave] are not exclusively Jewish sites and also belong to Christians and Muslims.

Israel has announced that the two holy places, dating back thousands of years, are being included in the country’s national heritage sites.

Rachel's Tomb is located immediately south of Jerusalem, "on the road to Efrata" near Bethlehem, where the Bible records (Genesis 35:19) that the matriarch was buried.

The other matriarchs – Sarah, Rebecca (Rivka) and Leah – and the forefathers Avraham, Isaac (Yitzchak) and Yaakov (Jacob) are buried at the Patriarchs’ Cave in Hevron, which the Bible records was bought by Avraham for an enormous sum of money.

However, UNESCO director Irina Bokova has accepted the view of UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Robert Serry, who warned that Israel’s inclusion of the two Biblical Jewish sites could harm the moribund peace process. UNESCO admitted the PA as a member four months ago despite the fact that PA chariman Mahmound Abbas failed to gain recognition in the international organization's General Assembly.

In a statement by the Paris-based agency, she did not explain the supposed Christian and Muslim connection with Rachel's Tomb. Palestinian Authority Muslim clerics have suddenly claimed in the past two years that Rachel’s Tomb actually was a Muslim site thousands of years ago, even though Islam was only founded 1,500 years ago.

Christians and Muslims built over Jewish structures at the Patriarchs’ Cave during the Crusades and the Muslim conquest.Jews were ony allowed to ascend seven of the many steps to the Tomb of the Patriarchs.

During the Jordanian occupation of Hevron from 1948 to 1967, Jews were not allowed to visit Jewish sites in Hevron, the Old City of Jerusalem and elsewhere in the region, and Christians also were prohibited from visiting their holy places.

Israel opened up all holy sites to the three religions after the Six-Day War in 1967.

In her statement, Bokova stated, “UNESCO has been mandated by its member States to provide assistance to the Palestinian Authority in the fields of education and culture. It has been working with the Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities of the Palestinian Authority and Palestinian civil society to protect and preserve the cultural heritage sites in the West Bank and is committed to continue doing so.”

The Palestinian Authority has increased efforts to claim several locations in Judea and Samaria as being under their sovereignty, including the Dead Sea and the Qumran Caves, where the 2,000-year-old Dead Sea Scrolls, containing the books of the Jewish Bible, were discovered in 1947.

2. Iran Offers Aid to Palestinian Authority to Defeat Israel
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu Iran Offers Aid to PA to Defeat Israel

Iran has used the visit of Gaza’s Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh to offer “scientific and technological experience” to the PA for a “victory” over Israel.

Iran's Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi told Haniyeh Saturday of “the need for Palestinian adherence to the basic principles of resistance as the key ingredient for their victory against Israel,” according to the official Iranian PRESS TV news agency. Haniyeh replied, “Muslims through full unity and with the support of the Islamic Republic of Iran will liberate Al Aqsa mosque [on the Temple Mount] in the future.”

Haniyeh is in Iran for the 33rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and is trying to shore up badly needed financial support as well as outflank PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas, head of the largely secular and rival Fatah party.

The two factions signed an agreement in Doha last week for a new unity government headed by Abbas and without PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad. Abbas is risking financial support from the European Union by joining Hamas without demanding that it reject terror and that it recognize Israel, although Abbas himself has not done so formally.

Iran’s offer of “scientific” assistance to the Palestinian Authority underlines the shared and stated objective of Iran and Hamas to destroy Israel.

A rejection of Iran by Abbas could throw the Palestinian Authority into further disarray, while accepting the Hamas-Iran alliance would clearly make Abbas an outcast even to the appeasement-minded European Union. Nearly two years ago, Abbas rejected advice from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and PA spokesman Nabil Abu Rudeineh said, "He who does not represent the Iranian people, who forged elections and who suppresses the Iranian people and stole the authority, is not entitled to talk about Palestine, or the President of Palestine.

Iran and Hamas’s supreme leader Khaled Mashaal’s have been at odds with Haniyeh for not siding with its support for Syrian President Bashar Assad. The financial problems of Hamas in Gaza are attributed as the reason for Haniyeh's visiting Tehran.

3. Rabbi Elyashiv’s Condition Deteriorating
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu Rabbi Elyashiv’s Condition Deteriorating

The condition of 101-year-old Torah Sage Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv is deteriorating as doctors at Jerusalem’s Shaarei Tzedek Hospital struggle to save his life. His 102nd birthday is to be in two months.

The leader of the Lithuania hareidi religious community, who is one of Israel's greatest Torahs scholars, has been hospitalized for a week after suffering shortness of breath. His condition previously had worsened but stabilized until Sunday.

It worsened again after he underwent procedures Sunday morning for the removal of mechanical breathing devices. He began breathing on his own with the help of oxygen then suffered a serious setback.

The rabbi’s spokesman, Shlomo Kook told Arutz Sheva Sunday that the procedure failed and his condition now is critical.

Doctors discovered the past two days that problems with Rabbi Elyashiv’s heart have been complicated by what appears to be pneumonia that has contributed to the worsening of his condition and which hampered attempts to allow to breathe independently.

Readers are asked to pray for the health of HaRav Yosef Shalom ben Chaya Musa.

4. Ahmadinejad Promises Nuclear Surprise
by Elad Benari Ahmadinejad Promises Nuclear Surprise

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Saturday that Tehran will soon unveil “big new” nuclear achievements, The Associated Press reported.

Speaking at a rally in Tehran marking the 33rd anniversary of the Islamic Revolution that toppled the pro-Western monarchy and brought Islamic clerics to power, Ahmadinejad did not elaborate on the upcoming announcement but insisted Iran would never give up its uranium enrichment.

“Within the next few days the world will witness the inauguration of several big new achievements in the nuclear field,” Ahmadinejad told the crowd in Tehran’s famous Azadi, or Freedom, square.

At the same time, the Iranian President said that “Iran is ready for talks” with the West about its nuclear program “within the framework of equality and justice.” He warned, however, that Tehran “will never enter talks if enemies behave arrogantly.”

Before Ahmadinejad spoke Saturday, Hamas’ Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh spoke to the crowd and said, “They want us to recognize the Israeli occupation and cease resistance but, as the representative of the Palestinian people and in the name of all the world’s freedom seekers... we will never recognize Israel.”

He added, “The resistance will continue until all Palestinian land, including al-Quds (Jerusalem) has been liberated and all the refugees have returned.”

Haniyeh arrived in Tehran for an official trip on Friday and was welcomed by Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi at Tehran's International Airport.

The visit is taking place following an official invitation extended to Haniyeh by Ahmadinejad.

5. IDF Attacks Terror Targets in Gaza
by Elad Benari IDF Attacks Terror Targets in Gaza

IAF aircraft struck three terror tunnels in southern, northern and central Gaza on Saturday night. A weapon manufacturing site in northern Gaza was hit as well.

The IDF Spokesperson said in a statement that direct hits were identified and all aircraft safely returned to their bases.

The attacks, said the statement, come in response to the high trajectory rocket and missile fire from Gaza into Israeli territory over the weekend.

Earlier on Saturday night, Gaza terrorists fired a short-range Qassam rocket at southern Israel. The missile landed in the Eshkol Regional Council district, in an open area.

No one was physically injured and there were no reports of property damage.

On Friday night, a Grad missile attack blew open a small crater between two homes in the Hof Ashkelon Coastal Region district.

A nearby electric pole was damaged, cutting power to both homes. The shrapnel also penetrated the walls of at least one of the houses as residents were sitting in the living room enjoying the evening. By a miracle, no one was physically injured in the attack.

“The IDF will not tolerate any attempt to harm Israeli citizens and IDF soldiers will continue to act against anyone who uses terror against Israel,” the IDF Spokesperson said. “The responsibility lies on the Hamas terror organization.”

6. Police Close Temple Mount to Jews, Blame Feiglin
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu Police Close Temple Mount to Jews, Blame Feiglin

Police closed the Temple Mount to Jews and other visitors all day Sunday, citing “incitement” on posters in the name of the Likud’s Jewish Leadership movement leader Moshe Feiglin, whose spokesmen deny they are involved.

The Temple Mount remained open for Arabs Sunday.

The posters were posted throughout the city and called for the “cleansing of the Temple Mount of the enemies of Israel.” Feiglin, who last week won 25 percent of the Likud party’s support in a challenge to the leadership of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, routinely ascends to the Temple Mount around the 19th day of every Jewish month, which this month is Sunday evening.

“The Temple Mount and the Western Wall Plaza are holy prayer sites, and the police will not allow them to be used for politics or for incitement,” Jerusalem police officials stated Sunday. However, mosques on the Temple Mount frequently are used by Muslim clerics to call for the removal of all Jews from the Old City of Jerusalem, including the Western Wall.

Spokesmen for Feiglin vehemently denied allegations they are involved in the posters and called on the police to investigate who is behind the incitement.

Feiglin last week accused backers of Prime Minister Netanyahu of “dirty tricks” during the voting for the chairman of the party. Many polling sites, especially in Feiglin strongholds in Judea and Samaria, did not open on time.

7. Hamas Moves Headquarters to Qatar
by Chana Ya'ar Hamas Moves Headquarters to Qatar

In direct contradiction to a statement earlier this month, Hamas politburo chief Khaled Mashaal is quietly moving his headquarters to Qatar.According to the LIGNET intelligence website, Mashaal announced Friday he will “temporarily” be carrying out Hamas activities from Qatar. However, “Hamas is keeping its Damascus offices open.”

Mashaal made the announcement after the terrorist organization closed a Palestinian Authority unity government deal with the rival Fatah faction."Mashaal likely wants to take advantage of Qatar's growing influence in the region and its reputation as a reliable negotiator and a friend of the Palestinian cause,” commented the Langley Intelligence Group in a statement posted Friday on the LIGNET website.

While Mashaal is setting up shop in Qatar, however, his rival in upcoming Hamas elections arrived Friday on an official visit to Tehran.Gaza's de facto Hamas Prime Minister, Ismail Haniyeh, delivered a fiery address to some 30,000 supporters on Saturday to commemorate the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran, vowing Hamas “will never recognize Israel.”

8. 'I Heard the Gurgle of Strangling'
by Chana Ya'ar 'I Heard the Gurgle of Strangling'

This coming May will mark 50 years since the man who hanged Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann – Shalom Nagar – pushed the button that sent the killer to his own death.

"It was 9 o'clock in the evening,” Nagar told the weekend edition of the Hebrew-language Ma'ariv newspaper. “We placed Eichmann on two planks. The rope came down from the ceiling. Everything was organized.

"My commander told me, 'Come Shalom, put the rope on him. We put the rope around his neck. We wanted to cover his eyes. We gave him the cover. Eichman didn't want it."He said in German, 'There's no need.' He made a gesture with his hand.

"The commander told me to press the button. I stepped up to the table and closed the curtain. I pressed. The planks opened.  Eichmann dropped."I heard the noise of the planks and the gurgle of choking,” he said.

The experience of executing Eichmann was extremely traumatic for the young officer. Nagar and his commander descended to remove the body after Eichmann was dead, a gruesome process he has never forgotten.Nevertheless, Nagar said, murderers like Eichmann – and the terrorist who slaughtered the Fogel family in the Samaria town of Itamar – deserve such a death. He had hoped that Israel would sentence the murderer to death.

"I watched the proceedings on television,” he said, “and I remembered Eichmann. I thought to myself,'Such a person deserves to be hanged. If they were to ask me to do it, I would be happy to oblige.'”
