Today’s surgical robots make human surgeons better, filtering out hand tremors and allowing maneuvers that would otherwise be impossible even with long, thin laparoscopic tools. Still, they’re just fancy tools under direct human control. But one day, surgeons may meet with patients and decide on the course of treatment, then merely supervise as robot surgeons carry out their commands. Seem far-fetched? In recent experimental trials pitting autonomous robotic systems against humans, the robots’ stitches were more uniform and made tighter seals.
