The dramatic drop in life expectancy in Russia and much of the former Soviet Union has yet to be reversed, according to a recent study. More Legislation is being debated in Kyrgyzstan that would offer a new way to deal with convicted pedophiles: chemical castration. Various countries enforce castration as a way to prevent repeat offenses, but various rights concerns arise. More Some 100 young men and women rallied in front of the U.S. Embassy in Dushanbe on April 5, protesting the release of former Prime Minister Abdumalik Abdullojonov from custody in Ukraine. More The Luli minority of Kyrgyzstan is a formerly nomadic group, ethnically distinct from its Central Asian neighbors. During the Soviet era, authorities forced the Luli in Central Asia to stop their nomadic way of life and settle on plots of land provided by the state. Today, many Luli families in Kyrgyzstan live in poverty and some children in Bishkek resort to begging to help their families get by.
