Azerbaijan: Failure to adopt resolution on political prisoners is a severe blow for human rights in Azerbaijan and to the credibility of Council of Europe

ARTICLE 19 is disappointed with the outcome of today’s vote by the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE). Whilst ARTICLE 19 welcomes the adoption of the resolution on monitoring Azerbaijan’s obligations it is extremely disappointing that a second resolution on political prisoners in Azerbaijan was rejected. Read more >

Kenya: Increasing violence against journalists ahead of elections

ARTICLE 19 is concerned about the increasing level of violence against journalists ahead of the national elections in the country in March 2013. A series of threats and attacks have been reported this month, including assaults by security officers and members of the public towards journalists who are covering political events. ARTICLE 19 calls on the Director of Public Prosecutions to launch prompt and effective investigations into all cases of violence and to hold those responsible to account. Read more >

Thailand: Prison sentence for journalist accused of insulting the King must be scrapped

ARTICLE 19 condemns the conviction of a journalist and human rights defender. Somyot Prueksakasemsuk has been sentenced to 11 years in prison under the repressivelèse-majesté laws, for publishing two articles that are alleged to have insulted the King. ARTICLE 19 believes this to be a clear violation of the right to freedom of expression and calls on the Thai Criminal Court to quash his conviction immediately and order his unconditional release. Read more >
