NATO Disturbed by S.Ossetia Border Fences

TBILISI: NATO is concerned by the situation on the Georgia-South Ossetia border, where Russian forces put up wire fences along the border last week, NATO's envoy for the South Caucasus and Central Asia James Appathurai said on Monday.

Georgia protested last Monday over the setting up of barbed wire fence by Russian border forces along its border with the disputed region of South Ossetia.

The building of illegal dividing structures is a violation of existing agreements and impedes the free movement of people, Appathurai said.

Last Wednesday, EU observers condemned construction of barbed wire fences on the administrative border between Georgia and South Ossetia as unacceptable, and said it may destabilize the situation in the region.

Russia’s Foreign Ministry released a letter on Monday condemning what is said were attempts “to stoke up the situation” on the border between South Ossetia and Georgia with an eye to the election campaign in Georgia, and “shifting the blame” to Russia.

Under an interstate agreement with Russia signed on April 30, 2009, South Ossetia delegated its state border protection functions to Russia until the republic establishes its own border guard service. South Ossetia’s border with Georgia is about 210 miles (350 km) long.

Diplomatic relations of Russia with Abkhazia and South Ossetia
Georgia lost control over one-fifth of its territory after South Ossetia and Abkhazia, another former republic within Georgia, broke away and were recognized by Moscow in the wake of a brief war with Russia in August 2008.

Both regions had enjoyed de facto independence since the early 1990s, following earlier conflicts with Georgia. Georgia repeatedly accused Moscow of aiding separatist movements in Abkhazia and South Ossetia at that time.

Moscow provides the breakaway republics with economic and military support and has recognized their independence, along with a handful of other countries. Most countries do not recognize South Ossetia or Abkhazia as independent states, but view them as part of Georgia.

NATO Starts Security Drills in the Baltics

TALLINN: NATO countries start on Monday large-scale security cooperation exercises on the territory of the former Soviet republics in the Baltic region, the Estonian military said.

The US-led Saber Strike 2013 drills involve some 2,000 personnel from Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, the United States, Norway, Poland and the UK, as well as troops from Finland, which is not a NATO country.

This year’s exercise will be conducted in all three Baltic States: in Lithuania - General Adolfas Ramanauskas combat training center located in Nemencine and Pabrade training area, Latvia – at the Adazi training area and in Estonia - at Amari air base and cities of Tapa and Tartu.

The program of the drills, which will continue through June 14, comprises a brigade-level command post exercise and computer assisted exercise, as well as company-level field and situational training exercises.

"Latvia will host the practical part of the exercises," Lt. Col. Tiit Paljak, the Estonian official tasked with planning the exercise, said earlier.

According to US Army Europe officials, Saber Strike exercise “aims to improve joint and combined interoperability between the US Army and partner nations, and also help prepare participants to successfully operate in a joint, multinational, interagency, integrated environment.”

US Fighter Jets Arrive for NATO Exercise

Four American A-10 fighter aircraft landed in Estonia on Friday, in anticipation of NATO's Sabre Strike exercise, which begins today and runs through June 14.

The third annual exercise will take place in all three Baltic nations, with the headquarters situated in Lithuania, ground operations conducted at Latvia's Adaži artillery range and the A-10s taking off from Estonia's Ämari airbase to support ground troops, a Defense Ministry press release said.

A total of 1,800 troops will take part, including Estcoy-17, which at the end of the year will become Estonia's last infantry unit to be deployed to Afghanistan.
