RFE/RL correspondent Golnaz Esfandiari spoke to Ryan Crocker, a career U.S. diplomat who has served in ambassadorial posts throughout the Middle East and South Asia, including Afghanistan and Pakistan, and was assigned to the U.S. Consulate in Khorramshahr, Iran in the early 1970s. But others say that perception has been inflated by his campaign and may not necessarily be accurate.
