PAKISTAN'S HOUSE OF CARDS

The fate of Pakistan's fragile new coalition government hangs in the balance as leaders of the alliance's key parties make a last-ditch attempt to resolve their dispute over reinstatement of judges fired by President Pervez Musharraf last year.

A collapse of the one-month old partnership between the Pakistan People's Party, led by Asif Ali Zardari, the husband of slain opposition leader Benazir Bhutto, and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's Pakistan Muslim League (N) party could lead to a regrouping of political forces and push the PPP to align with supporters of Mr. Musharraf, providing a reprieve to the leader.

Messrs. Zardari and Sharif were meeting in Dubai on Wednesday to try to salvage the situation for the newly installed ruling coalition. But no word of a resolution had emerged by late Wednesday night, triggering speculation that the government could fall.
