1. Shechita in England Under Threat Once Again
by Hillel Fendel
Harassment of British Shechita

A major supplier of kosher meat to England has shut down. McDonald’s denies it issued a “shut down your kosher plant or else” ultimatum.

Slaney Foods in County Wexford, Ireland, which supplies kosher meat for the London Board for Shechita (LBS), announced this past week that “We have made the decision not to have religious slaughter."

The London-based Jewish Chronicle reports that the McDonald’s chain, which is also supplied by Slaney, denied rumors of its involvement in the decision. It is McDonald’s policy not to use meat that is religiously slaughtered, such as kosher or halal. Following concerns that halal meat had been mistakenly used for some McDonald’s chicken products, the company asked all suppliers to "reiterate that their meat was not slaughtered in that way.”

Shortly thereafter, Slaney announced its decision – denying that they had been pressured by McDonald’s.  The Chronicle quoted Slaney's managing director Rory Fanning as saying, "It's not that we are doing it because someone was influencing us outside the company. We made the decision ourselves… There has been a lot of media coverage of ritual slaughter, and it was in the context of that, that the decision was made. I'm not saying it's the right decision. I am very hesitant."

LBS was not consulted about or informed of the decision in advance.

McDonald's said there had apparently been a misunderstanding: “If Slaney has stopped producing kosher meat as a result of our non-specification, then there has been a misunderstanding. Our supply chain is in discussion with the Slaney abattoir to ensure they can continue to produce kosher meat separately to their production of traceable, non-kosher meat for McDonald's UK."

Jewish Concern

Though a solution for Slaney therefore appears in sight, Jewish consumers are concerned. Jacky Lipowicz, chair of the Kosher Licensed Butchers' Association, said, "Shechitah is under threat once again. The constant harassment of shechitah has led to this situation."

New Zealand Jewry Fights for its Life

In New Zealand, shechita has recently been outlawed altogether, though the ban has been put on hold as the Jewish Community takes the government to court over it. The country’s two largest Jewish communities have initiated a joint struggle to “Save the Future of Judaism in New Zealand” by ensuring that shechita is legalized.

A statement issued by the Auckland Hebrew Congregation and the Wellington Jewish Community Center reads in part:

“New Zealand recently became the first country in the world to outlaw kosher slaughter since the Nazis enacted similar legislation in Europe over 70 years ago. New Zealand Jews may soon be the only Jews in the world who can no longer eat chicken. Your children or grandchildren may never experience a Passover with chicken soup and matzah balls, or ask the meaning of the lamb shank on your family’s Seder plate.

“Some kosher meat (but not chicken) may be able to be imported, for a limited period.  It is likely, however, that if we lose the right to practice shechita, then the ability to import kosher meat will soon follow.

“The absence of kosher meat will mean we can’t engage Rabbis or Youth Leaders. It will mean our religious families will be forced to leave New Zealand. Few Jews will want to migrate here.  We will be seen as a country where Jews are not welcome, and where our traditions and beliefs are not respected or valued. Our rich New Zealand Jewish history and culture, dating back over 170 years to the earliest days of New Zealand settlement, may soon become a distant memory.”

“The leaders of the Jewish communities in New Zealand feel so strongly about this that they are going to Court to challenge the Government…  We need the support of every Jew in New Zealand. Whether you keep kosher, observe Shabbat, or not, we must stand together. Your religious, cultural and social future is under threat…”

Photo Essay: Yamas in Action

The Yamas undercover counter-terror unit of the Border Police was founded in the 1990s in response to the growing Arab terror threat that resulted from the Oslo 'Peace' debacle. It assists the Shin Bet in its daily counter-terror activity. Flash 90's Nati Shochat spent part of the last six months accompanying the unit in its training and operations and these are some of his photographs.

3. Anger as IDF Collects Israeli Weapons in Jordan Valley
by Maayana Miskin
Anger as IDF Collects Weapons

IDF officials have announced that they plan to collect weapons from members of emergency security teams in several Israeli communities in the Jordan Valley, and place them in central weapons stores instead of the squad members' homes. The decision, made by Brigade Commander Yohai Ben-Yishai, follows the theft of two weapons from private homes in the town of Shdemot-Mehola on Saturday. The weapons had been secured with two locks as the law requires.

The Land of Israel Legal Forum protested the decision. “As far as we know, the weapons that were stolen had been properly secured,” the organization said in a letter sent to top IDF officials. “There's no doubt that [the theft] must be investigated, but to take away the ability for residents of the Valley to defend themselves from harm is unreasonable."

“Not only does this order not increase security, it undermines it, and is dangerous. A delay in the security teams' response could cost lives,” the Forum concluded.

Residents of the area requested that if the IDF follows through with the weapons collection, additional IDF soldiers be sent to Israeli towns in the area to offer protection in place of the local patrols. Their request was sent to several senior officials, including Defense Minister Ehud Barak and IDF Central Command head General Avi Mizrachi.

“If the army wants to take responsibility for security here, they're welcome to do so, but it's a huge area,” said regional council head David Elchiani. “The IDF arrives at the scene after 40 minutes on average, so our people need to be able to provide an instant response.”

Elchiani termed Ben-Yishai's decision “highly unusual,” and expressed hope that he would reconsider or would reach a compromise with local residents.

4. Journalistic Dogfight over Gaza, Dogs Continues
by Gil Ronen
Press Dogfight over Gaza, Dogs

Ha'aretz's Gideon Levy, possibly the most rabidly anti-Israeli Israeli journalist, is under fire in Israel after he besmirched the Jewish state in an interview for the British daily Independent. On Friday, Levy halfheartedly admitted inaccuracy in his earlier claim that Israeli dailies played up an IDF dog's death while ignoring the deaths of numerous Gazans during operation Cast Lead.

Maariv's popular and veteran journalist Ben-Dror Yemini wrote a blog post on October 15th titled “Baron of the Lie Industry” about Levy. It was an unusually harsh condemnation of a fellow journalist, but Yemini explained that Levy had left him no choice after the way he had “set a new record” in his slander of Israel in the Independent interview. Levy, he said, is “a dangerous propagandist who is writing the new protocols against Israel.”

Yemini drew particular attention to a claim Levy made in the interview regarding coverage of a dog's funeral. Levy said, according to the interview, that during Operation Cast Lead, “a dog – an Israeli dog – was killed by a Qassam rocket and it [was reported] on the front page of the most popular newspaper in Israel. On the very same day, there were tens of Palestinians killed, they were on page 16, in two lines.”

Yemini reported that after reading this claim he searched through issues of Yediot Acharonot (Israel's most popular daily at the time of the Cast Lead operation) and could not find a front page report about a dog. He did find articles that expressed concern over civilian deaths in Gaza – but no dog. He checked in Ma'ariv too, and found no sign of “Gideon Levy's dog.”

Yemini also quoted other claims by Levy, that Israeli soldiers “gleefully” and routinely murder innocent Arabs, and that Israel conducts “ethnic cleansing wherever it is possible,” and explains that in the eyes of the interview's readers, “the image of the common Israeli is horrific. These are not people we are talking about, but bloodthirsty brutes.” He compares Levy's claims to those in “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion” that served the Nazis in dehumanizing Jews.

Yemini reported that Levy has been holding a a lecture tour abroad, and has appeared in a club clled SPSC, which has “pro-Hamas tendencies.” Levy may be Israel's most famous journalist, he added, and the damage he causes Israel is substantive.

Levy's response: 'oops'

Gideon Levy responded to Yemini's attack in Ha'aretz with a sarcastic "oops!"  and brought pictures of front page reports in Yediot Acharonot and Ma'ariv about the death of an IDF dog named Arcos. He noted that this event occurred three years before the 2008-2009 Cast Lead campaign, but does not mention the fact that he claimed it happened during Cast Lead in the Independent interview.

Levy noted that “another Israeli dog killed by a Qassam rocket during Cast Lead received greater coverage than the dozens of Palestinians who were killed on the same day.” However, he does not note that this was not front-page coverage, as he had claimed in the Independent. Nor does he show that Arab deaths were reported “on page 16 in two lines” on that day.

5. IDF Rehearses for the Day Gen. Dayton's Forces Turn On It
by Gil Ronen
IDF Ready to Fight PA Forces

The IDF's Nachshon Battalion's recent training exercises have included simulated battles against Palestinian Authority security forces. The mock battles were intended to prepare the soldiers for the possibility that the PA security forces in Judea and Samaria, that were trained in the past five years by US Lieutenant General Keith Dayton, would one day turn on Israel. Dayton was replaced a few days ago by Lt. Gen. Michael Moeller.

The simulation was part of a seminar for Central Command officers held two weeks ago at the Lachish training base, and named “From Routine Security Operations to Escalation.”

IDF journal Bamachaneh reported on the exercise and explained that it was held against the backdrop of recent “accelerated contacts, far from sight and from the media, for a reconciliation agreement between the Palestinian Authority (led by Fatah chief Mahmoud Abbas) and Hamas.” Information about these contacts is spotty, but the only thing that appears to be preventing reconciliation is Hamas's demand that PA security forces cease coordinating security matters with the IDF.

An agreement between Abbas's PA and Hamas would “completely change reality in Judea and Samaria,” the military publication estimated.

Major General Avi Mizrachi, Head of Central Command, said at the seminar that “the most extreme situation that we predict in the Command is one in which the PA will decide to turn its weapons on us.” This scenario is possible, he said, but “our assessment is that it will not happen.” however,Brig.-Gen. Nitzan Alon, the commander of the Judea and Samaria Division, disagreed and said that Central Command must prepare for the situation in which the PA becomes an enemy and will cease operating against terror units as it does today.

Maj.-Gen. Mizrachi opined that without the infrastructure established by the IDF in recent years, no Arab security mechanism could prevent terror in Judea and Samaria. “The mechanisms fear a Hamas takeover of Judea and Samaria more than they fear us,” he said. At present, he said, suppression of Hamas is in Judea and Samaria is “not bad,” and Israel and the PA share a common interest in preventing terror from occurring in – or emanating from – Judea and Samaria.

Central Command has also noticed a tightening of ties between Judea and Samaria terror cells and those that operate in Syria, Jordan, Lebanon and Gaza. Terrorists attempted abductions of Jews five times last year, said an intelligence officer named Ronen, but there has been an increase in such attempts this year.

6. US Jews Go Right Wing
by Elad Benari
US Jews Go Right Wing

According to former senior White House aide and White House Jewish Liaison Tevi Troy, despite the assumption that Jewish citizens of the United States traditionally vote for Democrats and not Republicans, there is a shift in the Jewish vote already taking place at the state level.

Troy pointed out in Politico that nationally, Jews make up only about 2 percent of the American population but are heavily represented in big cities and have disproportionately high voter turnout rates. He added that while Democrats do get the lion’s share of the Jewish vote, some Jewish groups such as the Orthodox Jews have shifted to the Republicans, as seen in the 2004 elections, when 70 percent of Orthodox Jews supported George W. Bush.

The picture is completely different at the state level, according to Troy. One example he brings is that of the Republican New Jersey Governor Chris Christie, who in 2009 attracted 38 percent of the Jewish vote.

“For this reason, it is worth paying close attention to the Jewish vote in close Senate races in states with significant Jewish populations,” writes Troy. Be brings the example of “the complicated Pennsylvania race,” where Republican-turned-Democrat Jewish senator, Arlen Specter, is involuntarily leaving. In Philadelphia, Democratic nominee Joe Sestak signed the “Gaza 54 letter,” which called for Washington to pressure Israel to end the Gaza blockade. This fact alone might cause the Jewish voters to vote Republican.

Other examples where Jews might vote for the Republican candidates include Florida, where former Republican-turned-independent Charlie Crist, who is being endorsed by Jewish former Democratic Rep. Robert Wexler, might split the traditionally Democratic Jewish vote with Democratic candidate Kendrick Meek, causing a boost for Republican Marco Rubio.

New Jersey’s 12th district is another important area. Scott Sipprelle is challenging Rush Holt, another Gaza 54 letter signer. While neither candidate is Jewish, a “Rabbis for Sipprelle” group is seeking to raise awareness of Holt’s actions, another move which could help bring the district back to the Republicans.

The Ninth Congressional District in Illinois is also an area to watch, as Republican Joel Pollak - who has won the endorsement Harvard Law professor Alan Dershowitz - is challenging Democrat Jan Schakowsky, another Jewish candidate. Israel has become a central issue in the campaign, with Pollak claiming that Schakowsky does not do enough for Israel.

Troy explained that one reason for the apparent fluidity of the Jewish vote could be President Barack Obama’s perceived tough stance on Israel. However, he added that Jewish voters also care about issues such as the economy, the deficit, and health care. “Jewish voters in state elections across the country could significantly change our political landscape in November,” he said.

Tevi Troy argues  that the Jewish vote in America is evolving. Instead of it being monolithically Democratic there are signs that at the local and state level Jews can shift their vote enough towards Republican candidates that Democrats are forced to play defense. Troy takes New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's achievement of garnering 38 percent of the Jewish vote as evidence of this change. As a result, "Republicans  who can be competitive in the Jewish community, gain an edge against Democratic opponents, who then can’t take the Jewish vote for granted," Troy claims.

Abby Wisse Schachter also addressed this issue in an article published in the New York Post. While she agreed that Troy could be right “that this year could be different,” she added: “Don't look for huge numbers of Jewish votes for Republicans, however. It will be enough of a watershed moment if a critical mass of Jews stay home because they have finally soured on the Democratic Party, and that helps Republican candidates to win.”

The Associated Press reported that both Israelis and PA Arabs are closely watching the upcoming midterm race in the United States, sensing that its results could affect both the peace talks as well as Obama's ability to coax concessions from Israel.

The report said that the Arabs are hoping that Obama’s mild reaction to Israel’s refusal to continue the construction freeze in Judea and Samaria has been due to political consideration, and that he would be freer to apply pressure on Israel after the vote November 2.

Speaking to AP, PA negotiator Nabil Shaath said,  “We think that if President Obama emerges strong from this election, then this will enable him to work more on foreign policy. If he and his party lose in the elections, then this will limit his ability to pressure and actively engage in foreign policy. This is the problem.”

An adviser for Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu told AP that if Congress tilts Republican, it could have what he termed a "positive impact" on Israeli concerns, meaning there would be no pressure on Israel to make concessions.

7. GOP Congress Candidate Rev. Faulkner: Obama Delegitimizes Israel
by Fern Sidman, INN NY Correspondent
Meet Candidate Michael Faulkner

“Settlements are not an obstacle to peace in the Middle East,” says Rev. Michael Faulkner, ex- New York Jets lineman, an evangelical minister and candidate for Congress. He also quotes the Talmud.

This may be the first time that the Rev. Michael Faulkner is running for elected office, but it is not the first time that Faulkner is running. If the name sounds at all familiar, especially to sports fans, it is because this passionate Christian evangelical minister is also a former New York Jets defensive lineman and has more than ample practice achieving his goals both on the gridiron and on the field of life.

Arutz Sheva/Israel National News spoke with Republican candidate Rev. Faulkner about his campaign to unseat his political rival, Charles Rangel, a Democrat and a political icon who has spent the last 40 years representing the people of Manhattan's 15th congressional district, which includes the upper West Side, Harlem and Washington Heights.

Rangel, the former chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee, has been the subject of media scrutiny because of 13 charges of violating congressional ethics standards that were leveled against him by House investigators. The allegations include failure to report rental income from vacation property in the Dominican Republic and hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional income and assets on his financial disclosure statements.

Other charges focused on Rangel's use of congressional staff and stationery to raise money for a college center in New York named after him; accepting favors and benefits from the donors that may have influenced his congressional actions; use of a subsidized New York apartment as a campaign office instead of a residence; and misuse of the congressional free mail privilege.

"I am throwing my hat in the ring and running for Congress because I personally feel, as do my constituents, that greed and corruption are choking the life out of our government," said Faulkner, who won the endorsement of the New York Post this week.

“We are living during one of those times in history when people are saying enough is enough. We need representatives in Congress who do not have a personal agenda, but rather we must elect those who seek to solve the problems that government has imposed on the people. I have always believed that the highest calling is to serve the powerless and to speak for the voiceless," he continued.

Faulkner as minister

Rev. Faulkner's position as pastor of the New Horizon Church in Harlem has allowed him to tune in to and gain a hands-on understanding of the issues affecting his constituency. Having received his ordination in December 1991, Faulkner has rooted himself in the community he serves by leading the ministries specifically geared toward junior and senior high school students as well as managing the church’s programs for the homeless, the prison ministry and an HIV/AIDS program.

During his tenure as a minister, numerous city and community outreach programs were conceived and implemented, including the development of The Institute for Leadership, a non-profit organization dedicated to making future leaders of the city’s youth.

He is a 1992-1993 Coro Leadership New York Fellow and has served as regional chaplain for the New York State Office of Family and Children Services, vice president for community government relations at King’s College and advisor to former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani as a member of the Task Force on Police Community Relations and Commissioner for the City Charter Revision.

"The jobless rate is my community and others like it is staggering" said Faulkner. "My plan for creating jobs is based on something we call ‘Jobenomics,’ which is based on a book by economist Chuck Vollmer, with a goal of creating 20 million private sector jobs by the year 2020.

“The Jobenomics initiative is focused on teaching people to achieve personal freedom and dignity through finding and maintaining meaningful work. Jobenomics will provide mentoring from established coaches and successful individuals. We have also secured relationships with various lending institutions to assist qualified businesses to receive the microfinance loans to these small businesses which have been traditionally underserved by mainstream financial institutions", declared Faulkner.

The Talmud Says

The Republican candidate takes issue with the Obama administration's policy of entitlements and government bailouts. "I don't believe in entitlements because I feel it diminishes the dignity and value of the American worker. The Talmud explains that the highest form of charity is to give in such a way as to affirm a person's dignity, worth and value. This means that it is much more valuable to give a person a job, meaning a hand up, rather than a check for not working, such as a hand out. I will support entrepreneurial initiatives in my community which expand economic opportunities, foster a path to economic self-reliance, and restore the promise of the American Dream,” he intoned.

As to the thorny issue of health care reform, Rev. Faulkner weighs in on his opinion of the 'Obamacare' plan. "This bill was signed into law before any legislators had read it completely, which means they committed the American public and taxpayers to undisclosed and undetermined costs for benefits that will not be fully realized within 10 years", says Faulkner.

He added, "The health care industry is extremely complex. The amount of federal controls and regulations that were added to this bill to ensure its enforcement are dangerous. This healthcare reform bill is detrimental to New Yorkers as it will cause the loss of thousands of jobs throughout the state and will be responsible for the closure of hundreds of community health care facilities including hospitals and nursing homes.”

Rev. Faulkner told Arutz Sheva/INN that he is looking forward to speaking out and making a difference on issues pertaining to foreign affairs as well while in Congress. "Let's make it abundantly clear. The pressure that Israel faces under the current administration has got to stop", said Faulkner. "Look, I am a proud Zionist and not ashamed to admit it. I am also a Christian evangelical and my total support is behind Israel because I am enjoined by Scripture. I can tell you that millions of other Christian evangelicals feel the same way that I do. We have got to get the message out that the security of the United States is inextricably tied to Israel's security and we have to do everything in our power to ensure that Israel's security is not compromised.”

'Tired of hearing about 'occupation''

When asked about President Obama's plans to compel the Netanyahu government to extend the freeze on settlement construction in Judea, Samaria and parts of East Jerusalem, Faulkner replied, “I am tired of hearing the words 'occupation' and 'return to 1967 borders' when it comes to defining Israel because that simply is not the case. Israel is not an occupying power and thus anyone who says that Jewish settlement construction is an obstacle to peace in the Middle East is just using that as a smokescreen.  The real obstacle to peace in that region are terrorists such as Hamas, Hizbullah and other Iranian proxies."

As to Rev. Faulkner's perspectives on the creation of a Palestinian state, he says, "The Palestinians could have had an independent state in the past but they didn't come to the table. Israel has made territorial compromises and has proffered numerous peace proposals, only to be with resistance by those who really do not want peace. Any proposal for the creation of a Palestinian state must come from Israel and not the United States, and if such a state is established, it must be demilitarized for security reasons."

Expressing anger at the view of the Obama administration as it pertains to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, Faulkner stated, "Obama has participated in the delegitimization of Israel through his maltreatment of our best friend and stalwart ally in the region. By doing so he helps to fuel feelings of anti-Semitism. Where does he come off meddling in the internal affairs of Israel? Doesn't our president understand that our best hope for peace lies in solidifying our relationship with Israel rather than alienating her? Doesn't he comprehend the fact that any attack on the Jewish people and their land will be the harbinger for attacks on Christians and other peoples of the Western world?"

Concerning the Iranian nuclear arms threat, Rev Faulkner is quite clear. "You cannot appease these people because they are driven to destroy the West. I don't feel our president should be traveling to the Middle East and apologizing for America's support for Israel. Iran and Syria must be taken to task for underwriting and hosting terrorism in the region and the United States should make it clear that we will not negotiate with terrorists under any conditions."

Citing the significance of the upcoming November 2 mid-term elections, Rev. Faulkner makes a heartfelt appeal: "This is a most important and critical election that will help define the trajectory that our country, and the world for that matter, is taking. The Jewish people have the opportunity to help Israel through their participation in the electoral process. I look forward to working with my Jewish supporters to make our country stronger and better for future generations."

Rev. Faulkner's candidacy has received endorsements from Fox TV commentator Sean Hannity, National Right to Life parties, Newt Gingrich. the New Era Democrats, the Black Republicans PAC, the Frederick Douglass Foundation and more than a dozen Christian churches, ministries, clerics and community groups.

8. Testimony: Anarchist Activists Incite Arab Murder Attempts
by Amichai Gross
Testimony: Murderous Incitement

A personal, eyewitness account by a resident of Gush Etzion:

The dispersion of an anti-Israel “demonstration” near Karmei Tzur in southern Gush Etzion became a routine news flash immediately after Shabbat in various news sites. My personal story can perhaps show what is behind such a dry report.

Radical extremist activists in recent months have been inciting the Arab population in Gush Etzion, urging them to strengthen their nationalism while trampling the rule of law, damaging the fabric of life of the Jewish residents, demolishing the  good neighborly relations between the residents of the villages and residents of communities, and, most seriously: attempting murder.

On every Shabbat in recent months, the extreme left-wing activists come to the village of Beit Ummar near Karmei Tzur and pressure the Arab “youth” to approach the fence of the community of Karmei Tzur, while burning tires and throwing stones. Security forces try to disperse the violent riots, and have recently also begun to arrest rioters. In recent weeks, the youth have begun to riot also on weekdays.

On Wednesday, the fifth of Cheshvan, October 13, just after 3:20 pm, I noticed a burning tire at a distance of about 100 meters from the fence.

As I approached the site, the “youth" began throwing stones at me with a special gun. The stones, weighing about one kilogram [2.2 lbs.] each, landed about one or two meters from me. In a tower nearby were hiding two soldiers who escaped the stones and did not do anything in response to the attempted murder.

Meanwhile, the Arabs were shouting at the soldiers, “Come here, you cowards,” cursed, and made obscene gestures. When I got to the tower the soldiers told me that there was a special force on alert, and waiting for developments in order to arrive on the scene - as though an attempt to kill me was not enough for them.

Since I was equipped with a camera, I took pictures of one of the youths who were throwing the stones, and went with the pictures to the local police station. The investigator wrote down the complaint, received a CD with the pictures and passed the information on to the Hevron police for an investigation. Since then, I attempted to find out whether the murder suspect was arrested, but Rafi, the investigator who is handling the complaint, told me it was a long process. I do not know what's going on behind the scenes, but in the meantime there is no practical solution, and if there turns out to be one – it will be more than late.

The mishandling of the stone throwers which have recently been spreading in various parts of the country just helps to raise the next generation of terrorists. The daily brushes with security forces boost the little terrorists’ self-confidence and immunize them from any deterrence that a person who tries to harm a civilian or a cop should have. Arab children treat this as a game or a show, and are taught that stone-throwing is not perceived as a grave matter which brings with it severe punishment.
