A consultation put to the people of Hong Kong suggests an increase in nuclear capacity to supply half of electricity as a major plank of its climate change strategy.

US new build plans delayed

Plans for new nuclear build in the USA have been delayed due to a lack of demand for electricity, according to the head of the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI). TVA's forward planning sees it increasing its nuclear capacity over the next 20 years.
Horizon's hybrids for Oldbury

Horizon Nuclear Power says that it favours the use of "hybrid" cooling towers at its proposed new nuclear power plant at Oldbury, UK, which are about one-third of the height of conventional "natural draught" cooling towers.
First contracts for first new plant

At a supply chain event for UK contractors yesterday, EDF Energy announced that it has awarded over over GBP50 million ($77 million) worth of contracts for the first nuclear power plant it plans to build in the UK.

IAEA appoints new head of inspections

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has appointed Herman Nackaerts to replace Olli Heinonen as the head of its safeguards division. The move was announced IAEA director general Yukiya Amano to the board of governors. Amano also noted that Iran has objected to some inspectors, 'hampering' inspections.
