EU Discusses Belarus Teddy Bear Incident EU officials have met in Brussels to discuss Belarus, hinting at the end of their meeting that more sanctions could be imposed on Minsk soon. More The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe's (OSCE) representative on media freedom, Dunja Mijatovic, has asked the Belarusian authorities to drop charges against a blogger. More Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt has posted a message on his Twitter account that said his country's ambassador to Belarus has been expelled. More Opposition politicians and activists in Belarus have handed a petition to President Alyaksandr Lukashenka demanding the immediate release of Ales Byalyatski, the jailed chairman of the Minsk-based Vyasna human rights center. More Activists have placed several teddy bears in Minsk's city center with placards demanding the release of two activists arrested over a teddy-bear air drop last month. More Tymoshenko: A Year In Jail August 5 marks the first anniversary of former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko's jailing on charges of abuse of office, before she was officially sentenced to seven years in prison in October 2011. International outrage over her jailing and harsh treatment has also increased tension between Ukraine and the European Union. More |
