NATO servicemen undergo mountain training in Georgia
N. Kirtskhalia

Tbilisi: A course of basic training for mountain riflemen ended in the Sachkhere military base (region of Imereti, West Georgia) on Saturday.

At the ceremony, Defense Minister Dmitri Shashkin awarded 16 servicemen from five NATO countries and 11 partner countries with diplomas and certificates.

In the framework of the NATO program "Partnership for Peace" American, Norwegian, Estonian, Latvian and Armenian troops underwent training in Georgia. They were trained for three weeks to maintain fighting in the mountains, as well as overcoming mountain rivers and other obstacles and assistance.

As stressed by the Georgian Defence Minister, the whole course is conducted by Georgian soldiers who were at one time educated in France. "This is the result of reforms in the defense sector, as our military has instructed and prepared the military of NATO," he said.

Russia, Iran reject foreign intervention in Syrian crisis

MOSCOW: Russia and Iran confirmed Friday their principal position that the Syrian crisis must be settled with no foreign intervention.

During a meeting between Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov and his visiting Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, both sides also urged the end to violence in the crisis-torn Syria, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"The two sides highlighted the necessity to stop bloodshed and violence in that country, whatever it originates from, with no delay to settle the intra-Syria problems by the Syrians themselves with no outside involvement," the ministry said in a statement.

The two diplomats also urged "consolidated international efforts" for a peaceful settlement to the 17-month Syrian crisis based on UN-Arab League joint special envoy Kofi Annan's peace plan and the Geneva agreements that envisage a Syrian-led transition, the ministry said.

The meeting was initiated by the Iranian diplomat, who said Iran "condemns foreign intervention" in the Syrian crisis.

"We believe the situation in Syria cannot be settled by military means. The settlement must be political," Amir- Abdollahian said.

He also regretted that "some countries" attempted to undermine Annan's six-point peace plan.

Annan's widely accepted plan calls for the withdrawal of heavy weapons and troops from populated areas, a daily halt of fighting for the delivery of humanitarian aid and treatment of the injured, and talks between the government and opposition.

Annan, who assumed his current post about five months ago, said in Geneva on Thursday that he was disappointed over the lack of progress in the Syrian peace process and that he would step down after his current mandate expires on Aug. 31.

Russia on Friday expressed "deep regret" at Annan's resignation and urged that a successor be found quickly.

Omer Çelik: “If threatening situation is created for Turkey, our military intervention into Syria will be inevitable”
“The PKK cooperates with the al-Assad regime, if any organization is established on our border with participation of PKK, we will make military intervention”

Baku: “If a threatening situation is created in Northern Syria for Turkey or a separatist regime with the participation of the PKK is established, Ankara will consider military intervention into the region”, said deputy chairman of AKP Omer Çelik, APA reports.

“We also protect the rights of the Kurds in Syria, but we won’t give an opportunity for the presence of any terrorist activity there. We don’t recommend taking steps towards the creation of any threatening situation for Turkey”.

Omer Çelik said that nobody wants Turkey’s military intervention into Syria: “The issue on military intervention has been put into agenda for many times up to date. No country wants to make military intervention into neighbor country. Al-Assad distributes weapon, PYD and PKK cooperate with al-Assad regime. PKK didn’t demonstrate any position against as-Assad’s separatist regime up to date. Especially PKK openly cooperates with al-Assad regime in Afsin and Kobali regions. This is one of the pressure mechanisms of al-Assad regime against Turkey. They want to realize this mechanism with assistance of PKK. But if the threatening situation is created against Turkey, if any organization is established on our border with participation of PKK, the military intervention into Syria will be inevitable”

Rashad Suleymanov

Damascus wants credit from Moscow, this request of Assad will be responded in the next few days

Baku: Syria intends to join the Customs Union established by Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan, said Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs of Syria Qadri Jamil, APA reports quoting Turkish press.

The delegation of Syrian government wanted a loan from Russia during its Moscow visit. Moscow is expected to pass a corresponding decision on it.

Saying that Syria suffered economic troubles because of embargos applied by the European Union and USA, Jamil spoke about dialogue attempts between government and opposition groups: “We want to give posts to some opposition representatives in the new governmental cabinet. But they don’t want a dialogue”.

Japan to station officers in US military offices
By Zhao Shengnan

Japan and the United States are planning to station Japanese Self-Defense Forces officers in key US military offices near Washington, Kyodo News Agency reported on Thursday.

The two countries are making arrangements to station the officers at the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations and the Office of the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, core organizations of the US Navy and US Air Force, in what would be the first such case, Kyodo quoted US government sources as saying.

The planned dispatch of the SDF personnel as liaison officers aims at gaining firsthand information about US military thinking, and boosting bilateral cooperation in promptly responding to situations including disasters, such as major earthquakes, contingencies in the East Asian region and attacks by pirates, the sources said.

The exact timing of the dispatch of the officers hasn't been decided yet, they said.

Japan and the US have been boosting their strategic alliance and upgrading joint military activities in Asia recently.

The US Defense Department last week said that Japanese Defense Minister Satoshi Morimoto would visit the US on Friday, according to Jiji Press.

Morimoto, on his first visit to the US as defense minister, is scheduled to meet his counterpart Leon Panetta in Washington on Saturday.

The department also said the marines will verify the operational capability of Osprey aircraft during Morimoto's visit and that the two sides are arranging for Morimoto to board an Osprey.

On July 23, 12 Ospreys arrived at the US Marine Corps base in Iwakuni, Japan's Yamaguchi Prefecture, ahead of their planned deployment to Futenma Air Station in Okinawa Prefecture. The planes' arrival met mounting local opposition due to concerns about their safety, which have been heightened by two recent crashes abroad.
