A katana-armed industrial robot vs human samurai sword master

By Tibi Puiu on Jun 05, 2015 11:28 am
YASKAWA BUSHIDO PROJECTMachii Isao is an Iaido master and an expert sword wielder. He holds five Guinness World Records including "fastest 1,000 iaido sword cuts (36 min 4 sec)" and "most iado sword cuts to one mat (8), but you might know him as the real-life "fruit ninja" if you saw some of his stints up on YouTube, including slicing a BB pellet in half as it was fired towards him at 200 mph. It's a rare sight indeed to see such a massive display of both showmanship and art., for it's truly inspiring each time we get to see such feats of human awesomeness. But what happens when you pair a worldclass sword master, like Machi Isao, with an industrial robot, like MOTOMAN-MH24. Well, I went bore you with too many details, but suffice to say we're in for quite the show.

A psychological examination of why people hate GMOs (when they shouldn’t)

By Tibi Puiu on Jun 05, 2015 09:10 am
In any situation, there will be politicians or corporations with vested interests. Monsanto sucks because they're suing farmers who allegedly use their patented seeds, not because they supply GMOs per se. Don't hate the game, hate the player - in this case. Image: RT.comThere are some important issues nowadays in which scientists and laymen seem to disagree on. For instance, there's climate change. While the world's leading climate scientists agree with 95% confidence (very very very likely) that the world's climate is changing in an accelerated manner due to greenhouse emissions as a result of human activities. But only 50% of Americans agree that global warming is happening and is caused by humans. Then there's the age old Darwinism vs creationism schism. A major survey found that 31% of the US public believed that humans had existed in their present form since the beginning, with a further 24% stating that humans had evolved under the guiding hand of a supreme being. In contrast, only 2% of AAAS scientists said humans had not evolved in their time on Earth. Of course, then there's the case of doctors vs so-called anti-vaxxers - people who refuse to vaccinate themselves or their children because they think these cause illness, not ail or prevent it. But maybe one of the most heated debate in which scientists and the public is mostly opposed concerns genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Paleontologist finds new horned-dinosaur species, calls it “Hellboy” then writes a marriage proposal in the paper

By Tibi Puiu on Jun 05, 2015 05:19 am
Artist impression of Regaliceratops peterhewsi. Image: Julius T. Csotonyi/Royal Tyrrell Museum, Drumheller, AlbertaCanadian paleontologists discovered a new dinosaur which looks strikingly similar to the famous Triceratops. While the two are very similar in many respects, the new species stands out due to the size and shape of its facial horns and the shield-like frill at the back of the skull. It also had a longer nose horn than Triceratops, and two small horns above its eyes. The radiating frill and pentagon-shaped plates must have made the dinosaur look like a crowned Triceratops. Once you consider this, it's not surprising how the team named the new dinosaur Regaliceratops peterhewsi (regal is latin for royal, and Peter Hews is the paleontologist who first discovered the fossils).

By Alexandru Micu on Jun 04, 2015 12:25 pm
brachycephalus-verrucosus-frogSeven miniature species of frogs living on seven different mountain tops sounds like the premise for the next Kung Fu Panda sequel.
