Summit in Astana Seeks To Revitalize Role Of OSCE
World leaders are gathered in Kazakhstan's capital of Astana for a two-day summit aimed at revitalizing the role of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE). Regional security issues -- from Afghanistan and Kyrgyzstan to conflicts in the Caucasus -- top the agenda. More While Afghan and NATO leaders hailed their conclusion of an Afghanistan exit strategy in Lisbon, its success depends on the resolution of a number of internal and regional challenges that went unaddressed. More Karl Eikenberry, the U.S. ambassador to Kabul, is responsible for managing the civilian "surge" under President Barack Obama's Afghan strategy, as well as tending to the delicate relationship with President Hamid Karzai. Speaking to RFE/RL correspondent Abubakar Siddique on the sidelines of NATO's recent Lisbon summit, Eikenberry played down disagreements with the Afghan president and predicted no major changes in the Obama administration's ongoing review of its Afghan strategy.
