Uganda: Violent attacks on protesters as letter crisis continues
ARTICLE 19 condemns the violent attacks by the Ugandan police on protesters who have been demonstrating against the forced closure of newspapers and radio stations in the country. Tear gas canisters were fired at protesters in Kampala and police officers physically attacked protesters, including journalists and human rights defenders. The police have also ignored a court order requiring them to vacate the premises of Red Pepper Publications and Monitor Publications.

UNHRC: UN special rapporteur on right to freedom of peaceful assembly delivers United Kingdom country report
ARTICLE 19 welcomes the report of Maina Kiai, the UN special rapporteur on the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and of association, following his visit to the United Kingdom in January 2013 (the report).
The report, presented to the UN Human Rights Council on 30 May 2013, identifies a number of areas where protection for the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly and association should be enhanced, including the need to review the legal framework as well as police practices.

Vietnam: Injustice reigns as eight pro-democracy activists lose appeal
Eight Vietnamese pro-democracy activists have lost an appeal against their conviction in January 2013 for "carrying out activities aimed at overthrowing the people's administration". The court in Vinh City upheld the convictions of all eight activists, reducing the sentences of four of the group. The activists were all part of a group of fourteen human rights defenders who were arrested in 2011 for ‘criminal activities’ that included writing critical commentary of the government, distributing these comments online, as well as participating in and encouraging protests.

Senegal: Right of access to information should be at heart of fight against obstetrical fistula
On the occasion of the international day againstobstetrical fistula, ARTICLE 19 reiterates the importance of the right of access to information and calls on the authorities to take effective measures to adequately inform communities about the causes and the existing mechanisms to cure and prevent this injury that affects women so negatively.

UNHRC Event: Incitement to hatred (4th June)
Last November, the Rabat Plan of Action on the prohibition of incitement was released by the UN, marking an important step in clarifying the obligations of the state to prohibit incitement, while providing protection to the rights to freedom of expression and freedom of religion.
