Kyle justified his killing with a cloying sentimentality about his family, his Christian faith, his fellow SEALs and his nation. But sentimentality is not love. It is not empathy. It is, at its core, about self-pity and self-adulation. That the film, like the book, swings between cruelty and sentimentality is not accidental.

Handcuffs, Leg Shackles and Tasers: The New Face of Punishment in the Public Schools
On any given day when school is in session, kids who "act up" in class are pinned facedown on the floor, locked in dark closets, tied up with straps, bungee cords and duct tape, handcuffed, leg shackled, tasered or otherwise restrained, immobilized or placed in solitary confinement in order to bring them under "control."
The Quantum Leap Exhibit Program at Mount Anthony Union High School in Bennington, VT took a good look at FOX "News" in contrast to the published Ethics of Journalism per the Society of Professional Journalists. They concluded that FOX "News" failed miserably at practicing journalism on every level, as evidenced in their outstanding video, "Vermont High Schoolers Just Destroy Fox News About The Ethics Of Journalism." Is Russia engaged in a "Grand Master" chess type strategy to strengthen its assets by buying gold, or just hedging its bets? What will the recent Geek Syriza victory mean to the world's currency markets and economies?
Like people throughout history, the American people are being turned into serfs and slaves because they believe the lies that are fed to them. They sit in front of Fox News, CNN, and whatever. They read the New York Times. Anglo-Americans are not permitted any different news than what is served to them by "their" governments. That is the state of "freedom" in the West today.
The legislative branch is seeking to recall (and likely suppress) copies of a report which the new majority in the Senate regards as too critical of the CIA and too revealing of the methods employed by the intelligence agency in its brutal interrogations of prisoners at secret "black site" facilities in Europe and Asia, as well as at Guantanamo Bay.
The govt engaged in a great deal of security theater during the Jeffrey Sterling trial, most notably by having some CIA witnesses -- including ones whose identities weren't, technically, secret -- testify behind a big office divider so the general public couldn't see the witness.
To revise the recycling slogan, we urge officials to: Reduce the Army presence in Hawaii, Reimagine our futures, and support the Rebirth of a more diversified and vibrant local economy. Let's work together to find economically and environmentally sustainable alternatives to dependence on large-scale military presence on the islands.

Are we a nation of sheep, sheepdogs, and 1% wolves? How does a nation grow the good and reduce the bad traits among those herded groups? Is it possible to do so? How well is America doing in building a healthier herd?

Progressives and Liberals Should Be Wary of Pope Francis (BOOK REVIEW)
Pope Francis is a charismatic sweet-talker. But American progressives and liberals should be wary of his charismatic talk. In his well-researched biography of Pope Francis, Austen Ivereigh shows that the charismatic pope's thought-world is deeply conservative. He represents the pre-modern thought-world of medieval European Christendom. Conservative American Catholics will be delighted when they read Ivereigh's book.

Maya Schenwar: "Locked Down, Locked Out: Why Prison Doesn't Work and How We Can Do Better"
When you say, "incarceration isn't violence prevention, it's violence itself," that's a statement that a lot of people don't immediately accept. Confronting this topic head on meant I needed time and space to have long and sometimes uncomfortable (and ultimately, joyous) conversations with the reader, examining our assumptions and missteps and tragedies and thinking about what collective safety might look like.
Frontline joins the pack of anti-Russian demonizers with this transparently dishonest piece of journalism that far from presenting a reliable portrait of President Putin injects the viewer with a multitude of prejudices guaranteeing his or her condemnation of the Russian leader.
The US Supreme Court finally agreed to analyze the implications of the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution and marriage equality. In this case, multitudes of LGBT Americans yearn for marriage and feel discriminated against when state governments prohibit same-sex marriage. Many of these LGBT people who desire marriage are lesbians and gays who never desired heterosexual romance....
The Obama administration will propose setting aside more than 12 million acres of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) as wilderness, including 1.5 million acres of coastal plain, the White House announced Sunday, in a move that will spark a fierce battle with the new Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee chairman, Lisa Murkowski, and other Alaska Republicans. The announcement, according to individuals briefed on the plan, is just the first in a series of decisions the Interior Department will make in the coming week that will affect the state's oil and gas production.
American Sniper vs. Savages is a book written with the depth and mental alacrity of perhaps a George W Bush; and the movie a distortion of even that. In all, a tribute to hatred and racism that only the Iraq-Afghan debacle could merit. To our brave troops and "vanquished" savages, in the words of Chris Kyle, "War is hell."
The design on this disc might look like a six-year-old's scribbles, but in reality, it's one of the most sophisticated and influential artifacts of the Bronze Age. Called the Nebra sky disc, named for the town where it was found in 1999, the artifact has been dated back to 1600 BC. It's thought to have been forged during the European Bronze Age, a period between 3200 and 600 BC. The disc's discovery stunned archaeologists, who thought of the Bronze Age as brutal, uncivilized times of killing and little else -- most artifacts we've found are swords and other weapons designed for battle. Instead, the people who lived at this time had an intellectual understanding of the sky. Some archaeologists thought the disc was too incredible to be real. The bronze disc is considered to be one of the most important archaeological finds of the 20th Century.
Sarah Palin has just told the Washington Post that she's "Seriously interested in running for the White House in 2016." Yawn!!! She joins fellow no-chancers Cruz, Perry, Jindal, Ron's kid, Rand, Walker, Santorum, Huckabee, Romney and Christie, all likely to run. Jeb Bush could get the nod as the party's nominee, or a new name just emerging.

Mayor Bill de Blasio said on Sunday that the storm approaching on Monday was likely to be one of the biggest to ever strike New York City, and he urged people to stay indoors to avoid powerful winds, low visibility and "treacherous" road conditions. Both the governor and the mayor acknowledged that public transportation could be slowed or halted. "This could be the biggest snowstorm in the history of New York City so, yes, there could be delays of everything," Mr. de Blasio told reporters.
Sheldon Silver, the longtime speaker of the New York State Assembly, agreed on Sunday to relinquish his duties on a temporary basis as he fights federal corruption charges. His decision came amid mounting pressure from his fellow Democrats in the Assembly, who worried that the criminal charges would impair his ability to carry out the duties of one of the most powerful positions in the state's government. In an unusual arrangement, Mr. Silver would not quit his post. Instead, he would temporarily delegate his duties as speaker to a group of senior Assembly members.
Alexis Tsipras, leader of the left-wing Syriza coalition, is about to become prime minister of Greece. He will be the first European leader elected on an explicit promise to challenge the austerity policies that have prevailed since 2010. And there will, of course, be many people warning him to abandon that promise, to behave "responsibly."

Syriza Victory in Greece Could Be a "Historic Turning Point" for Eurozone Economic Policy, CEPR Co-Director Says
Left-wing party Syriza's strong victory in Greece's elections today marks a "historic turning point" for countries attempting to emerge from sluggish economic growth, high unemployment and other poor indicators more than six years after the Global Recession began
The projected victory, by a wider margin than polls predicted, may be enough for Syriza to govern alone. It hands the party head, Alexis Tsipras, 40, an overwhelming mandate to confront Greece's program of austerity imposed in return for pledges of 240 billion euros ($269 billion) in aid since May 2010. The challenge for him now is to strike a balance between keeping his election pledges including a writedown of Greek debt and avoiding what Samaras repeatedly warned was the risk of an accidental exit from the euro.

US officials said Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has effectively 'spat in Barack Obama's face' by bypassing the White House to arrange a speech before Congress in March. "We thought we'd seen everything," an unnamed senior US official told Haaretz newspaper. "But Bibi [Netanyahu] managed to surprise even us. "There are things you simply don't do. He's spat in our face publicly and that's no way to behave," the official said adding that there will be a retaliation. "Netanyahu ought to remember that President Obama has a year and a half left to his presidency, and that there will be a price." House Speaker John Boehner invited Netanyahu to address a joint session of the Republican-dominated Congress on March, 3 two weeks before Israel's general election. The address has been organised without the knowledge of the White House.
Tom Toro was a directionless 20-something film school dropout. Then, after an inspired moment at a used book sale, he started submitting drawings to The New Yorker -- and collecting rejection slips. Hundreds of them. Until he was asked the defining question, "Where's the joy?"
Conservatives have long sought an effective message against Social Security. Now, they seem to have found a new one to try as they set up a fight over the 80-year-old program in the coming Congress: The disabled are robbing the retired. Social Security advocates describe it almost invariably as the "divide-and-conquer" strategy: Pit the program's two funds -- the retirement and disability programs -- against each other. The disability fund won't be able to pay its full benefits starting in late 2016, & House Republicans passed a rule earlier this month stating that they won't allow a transfer of tax revenue from the retirement fund to cover the shortfall, as has been done multiple times on a bipartisan basis, most recently in 1994, unless Social Security's overall solvency is improved. Republicans have been clear that they intend to use the need for reallocation as leverage...
The latest picture by director Clinton Eastwood about Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle is having a major moment in our national culture, and as a CODEPINKer and a military family member I felt a responsibility to watch and report back on it. The presentation of children as potential/actual evildoers, and thus "deserving" victims of Kyle's kill shots, seems to me a sinister new development in American film, and something US culture is taking on under Israeli influence. (This stereotype deserves its own essays, as does the role of women in this and other war films.)
