The reported theft by Chinese hackers of blueprints for the US’s F-35 Joint Strike Fighter amounted to 50 terabytes of classified information, documents leaked by NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden have revealed.
The hackers are believed by many US officials to be affiliated with the Chinese government. The humiliating 2007 incident saved China “25 years of research and development,” according to a US military official cited by The Washington Post in a 2013 article covering the breach.
Previous media reports said “several terabytes” of data was stolen, but according to the new documents published by the German magazine Der Spiegel last week, the actual amount was far higher, at 50 terabytes –the equivalent of five Libraries of Congress.
The data – reportedly used by China to build their own advanced fighter jets – includes detailed engine schematics and radar design.
F-35 blueprints are just a fraction of what Chinese hackers have allegedly stolen from the Pentagon’s data vaults over the years. The reported haul includes some two dozen advanced weapon systems, including the AEGIS Ballistic Missile Defense System, Littoral Combat Ship designs and emerging railgun technology, a classified report revealed in 2013.
Edward Snowden, a former NSA employee, leaked thousands of classified documents to various media outlets in 2013. The focus of the leaks was on massive electronic surveillance programs by the agency and its allies across the globe.
The US government wants to prosecute Snowden for espionage, but for many he is a heroic figure standing up for privacy and government transparency. He is currently living in Russia, which granted him political asylum after he was stranded in a Moscow airport when the US revoked his passport.

The defense team for Ross Ulbricht, the 30-year-old man accused of running the online black market Silk Road under the pseudonym Dread Pirate Roberts, just dropped an unexpected new theory: Mark Karpeles, the CEO of failed Bitcoin company Mt. Gox, is the real Dread Pirate Roberts.
“We have the name of the real mastermind and it’s not Ulbricht,” Joshua Dratel, Ulbricht’s lawyer, said in his opening statement in the trial. It now seems clear that he plans to argue that Karpeles framed Ulbricht.
Karpeles has denied the allegation in an email to Motherboard: “I am not Dread Pirate Roberts … I have nothing to do with Silk Road and do not condone what’s happening there.”
The defense is clearly trying to raise reasonable doubt by implying that someone else could have been responsible for the site, which did more than a billion dollars in underground commerce for drugs, false IDs, and more before being shut down in October of 2013.
Dratel was cross-examining Jared DerYeghiayan, a homeland security special investigation agent who opened a case into Silk Road. DerYeghiayan now says he believes Ulbricht is the culprit, but Dratel presented evidence that he once had a different theory: back in 2012, DerYeghiayan was convinced that Dread Pirate Roberts was Karpeles.
I have a wealth of evidence to prove that [Karpeles] is Dread Pirate Roberts
Karpeles, who is from France, ran what was once the world’s largest Bitcoin exchange, Mt. Gox, which was based in Tokyo. DerYeghiayan’s theory was that Karpeles wanted to create a market that used Bitcoin in order to keep the price of the semi-anonymous cryptocurrency robust, which he believed was probable cause for Karpeles’s arrest. (Mt. Gox went bankrupt in early 2014.)
“[Silk Road] would be a device for leveraging the value of Bitcoin, and if he could create a site independent of Bitcoin, you could control the value of Bitcoin,” Dratel said, reading from DerYeghiayan’s emails.
DerYeghiayan believed his evidence was so strong that he even drafted a search warrant for Karpeles’s email in May of 2013.
At the same time, a parallel investigation had opened in Baltimore. DerYeghiayan told those agents not to contact Karpeles, for fear of spooking him too early. The Baltimore investigators didn’t listen, and instead seized a site run by Karpeles that had assets of more than $3 million, according to today’s testimony.
When the Baltimore investigators asked Karpeles about Silk Road, his lawyers said he would tell them the name of the person behind the site. Correction: An earlier version of this story implied investigators spoke directly to Karpeles; they actually spoke to him through his lawyers.

A South Florida family is outraged at North Miami Beach Police after mug shots of African American men were used at a shooting range for police training.
It was an ordinary Saturday morning last month when Sgt. Valerie Deant arrived at the shooting range in Medley, or so she thought.
Deant, who plays clarinet with the Florida Army National Guard’s 13th Army Band, and her fellow soldiers were at the shooting range for their annual weapons qualifications training.
What the soldiers discovered when they entered the range made them angry: mug shots of African American men apparently used as targets by North Miami Beach Police snipers, who had used the range before the guardsmen.
Even more startling for Deant, one of the images was her brother. It was Woody Deant’s mug shot that taken 15 years ago, after he was arrested in connection to a drag race in 2000 that left two people dead. His mug shot was among the pictures of five minorities used as targets by North Miami Beach police, all of them riddled by bullets.
“I was like ‘why is my brother being used for target practice?'” Deant asked. Deant’s fellow guardsmen were angry too, but they tried to console Deant, who was devastated.
“There were like gunshots there,” Deant said. “And I cried a couple of times.” She immediately called her brother, Woody Deant, who was 18 years old when the picture was taken.
“The picture actually has like bullet holes,” Woody Deant said. “One in my forehead and one in my eye. …I was speechless,” he added.
