“No one has ever succeeded in intimidating or pressuring our country and no one ever will, we have always had and always will have an adequate answer for all internal and external threats to national security,” Vladimir Putin said in an address to the FSB collegium on Thursday. “The situation cannot always remain as it is, it is going to change and I hope it will change for the better, including the situation around our country,” the Russian leader said. “But the changes for the better will not happen if we constantly yield, give in or use baby talk, it will only improve if we become stronger,” he emphasized. “NATO is developing its rapid response forces and is boosting its infrastructure near our borders, we are registering attempts to violate nuclear parity and the creation of the European and Asia-Pacific segments of the missile defense systems is being sped up,” Putin said. Apart from the military standoff with NATO, Russia had to oppose the attempts to undermine its political system, the Russian leader noted. “They are using a whole range of means for the so-called containment of Russia, from attempts at political isolation and economic pressure to a full-scale information war and tools used by special services.” The Russian president demanded that the FSB apply maximum effort to prevent the destabilization of the country. “Western special services do not give up their attempts to use non-government groups and politicized unions to discredit Russian authorities and destabilize the internal situation in Russia. They are already planning actions for the period of the forthcoming elections in 2016 and 2018,” Putin said. In 2016 Russia will hold the federal parliamentary election, and the next presidential poll is scheduled for 2018. The president stated that the authorities intended to maintain their dialogue with the opposition and Russian civil society in general, as well-founded criticism and partnership have proved to be useful for any nation, including Russia. “But it makes no sense to argue with those who work on orders from outside, who serve the interests of not their nation but an alien nation or nations,” he said. Putin pledged to continue the recently introduced practice of disclosing the foreign funding of political groups and NGOs, to check if the declared objectives of such groups match their real activities and to cut short any attempts at violations. The president’s statements are in line with the conclusions of Russia’s top consultative body on national security, the Security Council, that said Wednesday that the 2015 US National Security Strategy was openly anti-Russian and could have multiple negative consequences on relations between Moscow and Washington. The document, published in early February, was based on the principles of American Exceptionalism and the alleged right of unilateral enforcement of US interests in various parts of the world, the Russian security experts claimed in their conclusion. No doubt the New West sees something like this as dangerous and subversive. Undeterred by his waning power over nationalism in the UK, Nick Griffin has kept with his cause by declaring that Russia will save “Christendom”. The former BNP leader was expelled from the organisation last year, after members accused him of attempting to “destabilise” it and of “harassing” its membership. Griffin responded by accusing the party leadership of playing “plastic gangster games”. At the International Russian Conservative Forum in St Petersbury over the weekend, which was organised by a pro-Kremlin ultranationalist party, Griffin warned the audience that Christendom would succumb to “a terrible civil war”, become and Islamist caliphate “or perhaps both”, BuzzFeed reported. He added that “the survival of Christendom” is “absolutely impossible without the rise of the Third Rome: Moscow.” Roberto Fiore of Italy’s Forza Nuova, mirrored Griffin’s comments at the event, and claimed that Moscow is currently the only nation guarding what he regards to be Western values in the way Rome once did. “It’s not me saying this, it’s God saying it,” he said, the Wall Street Journal reported. In an interview with the US newspaper, Griffin said Russia is “more free” than the West as a similar event would be banned in the US or the UK. Other guests included Udo Voigt, a senior figure in Germany’s extreme-right National Democratic Party, and members of the ultra-right Greek party Golden Dawn. Speakers at the event mirrored Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent message that the West is facing a “profound moral crisis, and argued that the region is also blighted by ill including abortion, atheism, Freemasonry, and unbridled immigration that, if unchecked, will wipe out the Caucasian race. A man from Mexico in the US illegally is accused of holding a young woman captive in a locked room where he raped her for months and subsequently impregnated her. Detectives with the Hidalgo County Special Investigative Group apprehended Noe Manuel Mendoza, 52, after receiving a 9-1-1 call from the Texas home where a 20-year-old woman was reportedly detained against her will after being smuggled into the US. “The female victim was from the [sic] brought into the country illegally from Mexico and kept away from the public eye by her captors and continuously sexually assaulted,” states a news release from the San Juan police. A person inside the home helped the woman, who is six months pregnant, by providing her a cell phone, according to the city’s police chief. After being rescued, the woman admitted to police she had paid to be smuggled into the country seven months ago, but that Mendoza and another man kept her locked inside a residence in San Juan. Police were able to rescue the woman Tuesday night amid a raid, and apprehended Mendoza the following day. Mendoza, believed to be a Mexican national, according to The Monitor, is being held on a half a million dollar bond, but his family says the woman’s allegations are lies. They also claim to have recordings that prove she’s been living with them in the US for the past three years. Some Rio Grande Valley residents were immediately skeptical of the story, claiming that the woman may have fabricated the charges to attain permanent residency. “So long as her information is corroborated through police investigation, she may be eligible for automatic Lawful Permanent Resident status,” said Michael Hernandez commenting on ValleyCentral.com. “It does not matter if the man is actually convicted or not.” “Her story may or may not be entirely true, but many mexican nationals have obtained residency by being victims of certain crimes in the U.S.” A separate commenter also noted the increasingly popular tactic is “becoming a trend with Mexican nationals now who are seeking to apply for citizenship.” Mendoza has previously faced human smuggling charges, say San Juan police, and now faces two first degree felony charges, including aggravated kidnapping and sexual assault. He may also be eligible for federal charges as well, reports The Monitor. Source |

The bipartisan Surveillance State Repeal Act, if passed, would repeal dragnet surveillance of Americans’ personal communications, overhaul the federal domestic surveillance program, and provide protections for whistleblowers. House lawmakers Mark Pocan (D-Wis.) and Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) are co-sponsoring bill H.R.1466, which was introduced on Tuesday and would repeal the 2001 Patriot Act, limit powers of the FISA Amendments Act, and prohibit retaliation against federal national security whistleblowers, according to The Hill. “The Patriot Act contains many provisions that violate the Fourth Amendment and have led to a dramatic expansion of our domestic surveillance state,” said Rep. Massie in a statement. “Our Founding Fathers fought and died to stop the kind of warrantless spying and searches that the Patriot Act and the FISA Amendments Act authorize. It is long past time to repeal the Patriot Act and reassert the constitutional rights of all Americans.” Specifically, the bill would revoke all the powers of the Patriot Act, and instruct the Director of National Intelligence and the Attorney General to destroy any information collected under the FISA Amendments Act concerning any US person not under investigation. It would repeal provisions of the FISA Amendments Act to ensure surveillance of email data only occurs with a valid warrant based on probable cause. The bill would also prohibit the government from mandating that manufacturers build mechanisms allowing the government to bypass encryption in order to conduct surveillance. Additionally, the bill would protect a federal whistleblower’s efforts to expose mismanagement, waste, fraud, abuse, or criminal behavior. It would also make retaliation against anyone interfering with those efforts – such as threatening them with punishment or termination – illegal. “Really, what we need are new whistleblower protections so that the next Edward Snowden doesn’t have to go to Russia or Hong Kong or whatever the case may be just for disclosing this,” Massie said. There have been previous attempts to limit dragnet surveillance under the Patriot Act since former National Security Agency analyst Edward Snowden leaked information regarding the programs in 2013, but the Senate bill introduced in 2013 never reached the floor for a vote. “The warrantless collection of millions of personal communications from innocent Americans is a direct violation of our constitutional right to privacy,” said Rep. Pocan in a statement. “Revelations about the NSA’s programs reveal the extraordinary extent to which the program has invaded Americans’ privacy. I reject the notion that we must sacrifice liberty for security – we can live in a secure nation which also upholds a strong commitment to civil liberties. This legislation ends the NSA’s dragnet surveillance practices, while putting provisions in place to protect the privacy of American citizens through real and lasting change.” Portions of the Patriot Act are due for renewal on June 1.
