More than 95,000 troops belonging to Russia and its regional allies have started the annual Center exercises that span from the Volga to Siberia.
“Center-2015 is the final step in the armed forces’ military preparations during 2015,” said a statement from the ministry of defense, which said that it conducted nearly 80 military drills in August alone, as well as an unannounced inspection of the troops involved in the exercises last week.
The war games will engage more than 7,000 pieces of armor, up to 170 planes and 20 warships. 20 different training ranges will be used as troops belonging to all security branches, including border guards, FSB and drug police, will make maneuvers ranging up to 6,000 km. The exercises are scheduled to finish on September 20.
“What we are seeing now has not been seen since the Cold War – late 1970s and early 1980s. The army isn’t just testing out new vehicles, equipment and techniques, but is using ever greater resources for doing so,” military historian Vyacheslav Filatov told Russia’s army-sponsored Zvezda channel.
Kazakhstan will provide troops while other members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), which also include Belarus, Armenia, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, is sending officers to observe and take charge of segments of the drill.
The scenario for the war games sees the allied army attempting to localize an international threat (World War 3) coming from central Asia. Most troops will be purposefully operating in unfamiliar terrain, and there will be simulations of the need to treat of huge numbers of casualties, with “wounded” troops being delivered to mobile hospitals.
“While these maneuvers are defensive in their nature, NATO will be looking on with concern,” military expert Sergey Fedorov told Zvezda. “They are astonished by the scale of the war games – it is something they have rarely seen, and would never practice themselves, restricting themselves only to limited situational drills.”
Also starting Monday, about 1,000 troops from Latvia, with the same number being supplied by NATO allies, including US, UK and Germany, begun conventional training exercises in the country. A day earlier the alliance finished Swift Response 15, the biggest military exercises in Europe since the collapse of the Berlin Wall, involving about 5,000 soldiers.
Earlier in the month, the US deployed two MQ-1 Predator long-range unmanned surveillance drones and 70 airmen to Latvia on a training mission.
In May, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia jointly asked for permanent NATO bases, alleging that Russia has the capacity to invade them within four hours of ordering an attack. Moscow lashed out at the move, saying it contravenes the 1997 NATO-Russia Founding Act.

Many Americans would support a military takeover of the US government, according to the results of a recent survey.
A YouGov poll showed that 29% of Americans could imagine supporting a coup, while 41% said they could not imagine supporting such an operation.
The poll found that 43% of Republicans would support a military coup in certain instances, while only 20% of Democrats and 29% of independents would.
More people said they would be likely to support a military takeover if the government is violating the Constitution. In that case, 43% of Americans would support the military stepping in, while 29% would be opposed.
The same poll found that most people respect military officers much more than they do politicians, as 71% of respondents said military officers put the interests of the country ahead of their own interests, while just 12% thought the same about members of Congress.
Earlier this year, multi-state US military exercise had conspiracy theorists warning that martial law was going to be instituted across the country.
The commotion over the Jade Helm 15 operation even prompted Texas Governor Greg Abbott to call on the State Guard to monitor the drills.
Abraham Wyner, of the University of Pennsylvania, said the YouGov poll, like any online poll, is not truly representative of the US population.
“People who are participating in an online poll are generally attracted to that poll because of some variable, some characteristic which is connected typically to one outcome or the other in that poll,” he told the Guardian.

An incredible accusation now comes from the ranks of the Austrian intelligence service. According to information by an employee of the Austrian Defence Office, findings about the fact that the US is paying the smugglers who daily bring thousands of refugees to Europe is presented.
The traffickers demand huge sums of money to bring refugees to Europe illegally. These refugees are often very poor, yet a transport across the Mediterranean currently costs 7000-14000 Euros, which vary from region and trafficking organization.
From police circles, which have to do with asylum seekers on a daily basis (alone in Erstaufnahmelager Traiskirchen there are more than 100 officers), costs to different countries have long been known. And the suspicion that the United States, in terms of geostrategy, is involved in the game is voiced repeatedly.
A few experts are willing to let reliable information be leaked, but no one wants their name to be leaked in public.
There are insights that organizations from the US have created a co-financing scheme and carry substantial amounts of the trafficking costs. Not many refugees from North Africa have 11,000 euros in cash, yet nobody dare ask where the money comes from?
There is a strict media blackout on the issue. Even the HNaA (*) has received no information or may not pass it on. However, it must be told to the public. These are the same arsonists at work that plunged Ukraine into chaos a year ago.
It sure is a very good question, which nobody in mainstream media is asking. Where does the money come from? It should be pretty clear to anyone that it is impossible that poor Africans and/or Middle Easterners who have had to flee either war or poverty can have the amounts of money being asked by traffickers. So how do they get on the boats without being sponsored by someone? Is the Obama administration sponsoring the migrant invasion of Europe? Is the UN involved? Is Saudi Arabia involved? Someone is, and mainstream media should start hiring journalists who can act like journalists. It’s urgent! Maybe then we would get answers to questions like this. Meanwhile you’ll have to rely on alternative media to ask the questions. Those who are independent and dare.

On Monday the European states of Slovakia and Austria reinstated border checks. The move follows a closing of the border over the weekend by Germany.
Germany says the situation is the worst refugee crisis since the end of the Second World War. It is now reappraising its open arms policy toward immigrants.
Austria plans to deploy the army to stem the influx of refugees from Syria, the greater Middle East and Africa.
Refugees are attempting to cross the border as Hungary plans to arrest illegal immigrants on Tuesday.
“Illegal border crossings will no longer be misdemeanors but felonies punishable with prison terms or bans,” declared Hungary’s prime minister, Viktor Orban.
The Netherlands is also stepping up border checks along its border with Germany.
“We have to pull ourselves together today; if not, Europe will be torn apart,” said Luxembourg minister Jean Asselborn prior to a European Union meeting on the crisis in Brussels.
It is expected EU governments will support the creation of large refugee camps in Italy and Greece and also attempt to establish camps outside of Europe for refugees.
Bureaucrats in Europe are concerned that many of the people entering the continent are economic immigrants, not asylum seekers from war torn Syria.
“We need better controls in general, because we have determined that in recent days, many of those on the move are really not refugees,” said Joachim Herrmann, the Bavarian interior minister.
