My oldest son likes to have a hot lunch and he likes to work in the kitchen at times.  He also LOVES pizza.  So I pulled out a tried and true recipe for Pepperoni Bread for him to make.  He did a great job and loved them so much he made them again for a church dinner!  You could fill these with other things than pepperoni, but that is his favorite.  I don’t like pepperoni, but I tasted the end where it was mostly bread and it was so yummy!  He did a great job!
Pizza Bread
  • 1/4 cup warm water
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 T yeast {or one small package}
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 beaten egg
  • 2 T vegetable oil
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 T sugar
  • 4 cups of flour
  • 4-5 cups your favorite ingredients
  • 2-3 cups of shredded cheese
  • 1 can or jar tomato sauce
Dissolve 1/2 teaspoon sugar and yeast in 1/4 cup warm water.  Set aside until frothy.
Mix all other ingredients except flour.  Add in yeast.  Mix well.  Gradually add in flour.  Go by feel.  Mix should be very stiff.
Turn out onto floured board, knead for ten minutes.  Put in a greased bowl, cover and let rise for 1 hour.
While the dough is rising, prepare stuffing ingredients.  Use your favorites.  Roll out dough into a large rectangle.  Spread with sauce, sprinkle with ingredients and cheese.  Roll in jelly roll fashion, width wise, sealing edges, and folding under ends.  Place roll on greased cookie sheet or jelly roll pan.  It should fit if you place it at an angle.  Let it rise again 20 minutes.  Brush top with a beaten egg.  Bake at 350 for 45 minutes.  Makes about 12 servings.  This also warms up well.
