1. ג€˜Five Townsג€™ Prepares to Save Elderly from Irene
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu ג€˜Five Townsג€™ Set to Save Elderly from Irene

Jews in New York Stateג€™s "Five Townsג€ made ready for Irene as it thunders into the area. Rabbis allowed radios to be on during the Sabbath.

The Five Towns is an informal name for the grouping of villages and towns in Nassau County, New York on the South Shore of western Long Island adjoining the border with Queens County in New York City. It includes Lawrence, Cedarhurst, Woodmere, Hewlett and Inwood and residents of the southwest corner of the Town of Hempstead.

Its Orthodox Jewish communities sent out a flyer to members of their congregations, which stated:

"Dear Resident of Far Rockaway and the Five Towns.

We understand that many in the community may be scared, concerned, or simply unsure of what should or should not be done in anticipation of the predicted Hurricane Irene which potentially might hit our neighborhood this weekend.

We have been working over the last several hours with community leaders exploring all possibilities which we may face during this storm.ג€

The efforts were  coordinated with rescue services, such as Hatzolah Emergency Servies, Achiezer Community Resource Center and local police.

The Vaad Harabbonim (Rabbinic Council, ed.) of the Five Towns, also a signatory to the flyer, concluded that in view of the danger to life, ג€œIt is permissible, and strongly encouraged, [to] leave a battery powered radio set to a news channelג€ during the Sabbath.ג€

The community eaders asked residents to report the names of elderly and handicapped people so that they can be evacuated quickly and safely, if necessary.

Hurricane Irene began battering the New York area shortly after midnight Saturday, and Jews were advised to make plans to be away for the Day of Rest if they felt uncomfortable waiting for the storm during the Sabbath.

The Town of Hempstead stated, ג€œWe want to provide our residents, especially seniors and other vulnerable residents, with essential resources and tips to prepare for the major storm forecast for this weekend,ג€ Town Supervisor Kate Murray said.

The local Brandon Patch website reported that the town has made boats available if roads are flooded, but marinas are removing boats from the water to prevent damage from the hurricaneג€™s ferocious winds and high waves.

Although Irene was downgraded to the lowest level in terms of danger, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said, ג€œI would not advise people to focus on category 1, 2 or 3. Irene remains a large and dangerous storm. People need to be prepared.ג€

Storm damage is projected to run at more than $55 billion.

2. Gaza-Based Salafi Group Launched Rockets at Israel
by Chana Ya'ar Gaza-Based Salafi Group Launched Rockets at I

A radical Salafi Islamist group affiliated with the international Al Qaeda terrorist organization has taken responsibility for launching Sunday morning's Grad rocket attack at southern Israel.

The Jama'at al-Tawhid wa'l-Jihad (JTJ) jihadist organization (Group of Monotheism and Jihad) allegedly issued a statement claiming ג€œcreditג€ for the attack on Be'er Sheva, the largest city in Israel's southern region.

The missile was intercepted and neutralized by the Iron Dome anti-missile defense system at about 7:15 a.m. local time. Residents were warned by the Color Red air raid alert siren before the missile arrived in Be'er Sheva's air space.

Salafi groups have slowly grown to be a major power in Gaza in the past several years, with thousands of Hamas members switching sides to join the more radical Islamic factions, all of which are linked to Al Qaeda and many of which operate in Judea and Samaria as well.

JTJ was founded by Jordanian Salafi Islamist Abu Musab al-Zarqawi together with Kurdish sympathizers. Zarqawi, who pledged his allegiance to Osama Bin Laden's terrorist network in October 2004, is the same murderer who beheaded 26-year-old U.S. businessman Nicholas Berg on videotape in May 2004.

The group's spiritual adviser was Palestinian Authority imam Abu Anas al-Shami, also known as Omar Yusef Juma'a, born in Kuwait and a one-time resident of Yabroud, a village near the PA capital of Ramallah. In 2003 he joined Zarqawi in Iraq, eventually becoming his second-in-command until he was assassinated in targeted U.S. missile strike on his car in September 2004.

Among the Koranic texts taught by al-Shami and cited by JTJ in justifying its slaughter is an alleged quote from the Islamic prophet Muhammad, ג€œWhoever slaughters a non-Muslim [at war with Islam, or 'enemy occupiers'] sincerely for the sake of Allah, Allah will make hellfire prohibited upon him.ג€

Another quote allegedly from Allah (G-d) often cited by the group to justify its actions directs operatives to behead its victims: ג€œWhen your Lord revealed to the angels: I am with you, therefore make firm those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve. Therefore strike off their heads and strike off the fingertip of them.ג€

3. Israel Minimizes Report on Reopening Camp David Accords
by Chana Ya'ar Gov't Dismisses Report on Egyptians in Sinai

Israeli government officials are dismissing a media report that thousands of Egyptian military personnel will be allowed into the Sinai Peninsula.

According to a report broadcast Sunday morning on Voice of Israel government radio, Egypt has not asked to increase the number of troops in Sinai, other than to add 1,000 police officers in the Peninsula in order to deal with the terrorist groups.

Officials said, however, that Israel and Egypt have a ג€œshared interestג€ in ensuring calm in the region, and that if an official request is made, it would be considered.

The Egyptian Gazette and numerous other Arab media are reporting that Israel and Egypt are planning to reconfigure the Camp David Accord to allow for increased military personnel in Sinai.

ג€œSometimes you have to subordinate strategic considerations to tactical needs,ג€ Defense Minister Ehud Barak told The Economist on Friday.

The magazine reported that Barak and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu were ג€œgoing to agree to Egypt deploying thousands of troops in Sinai even though the Israel-Egypt peace treaty strictly forbids it. They will have helicopters and armoured vehicles... but not tanks beyond the lone battalion already stationed there,ג€ the magazine reported.

A terrorist cell comprised of some 20 members carried out a multi-site cross-border attack just north of Eilat on August 18, killing eight Israelis and wounding at least 40 others. Most of those killed were civilians, though some were soldiers. IDF soldiers fought back, killing ten of the attackers.

Investigations by Israeli and Egyptian officials came up with the same conclusions: The terrorist cell had originated in Gaza but had infiltrated easily into the Sinai Peninsula a month earlier, camped and trained there before embarking on the operation. At least three of the terrorists were Egyptian nationals.

Since the revolution in Tahrir Square that toppled the government of former President Hosni Mubarak, Sinai has become an increasingly lawless territory. But it was not entirely under government control prior to the Arab Spring in any event.

Two years ago, Hamas terrorists breached the border between Gaza and Egypt, and hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Authority Arabs poured into Egypt. Thousands of terrorists grabbed the opportunity to infiltrate into the Sinai along with those who were simply racing towards an unexpected shopping trip.

Since that time, the United States promised to help seal the border ג€“ and prevent the construction of further terrorist smuggling tunnels ג€“ by sinking a deep metal barrier between the two. The barrier is not finished, but the Egyptian leader who was at least somewhat committed to its construction is now long gone.

4. IDF Rescues Arab Mother and Baby from Gaza Rocket Attack
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu IDF Rescues Arab Mother and Baby from Terror

The IDF has rescued an Arab woman and her baby daughter after they received medical care in Israel and then were caught in a Hamas mortar shell attack on the Erez Crossing to northern Gaza.

The commander of the Erez crossing and another security officer brought the woman and baby to a protected shelter at the crossing where they were given a meal for the end of the daily fast during the Muslim month of Ramadan.

Two other Arab women and another baby, who had received Israel's medical care, managed to cross into Gaza before the explosions at the crossing, cutting the electricity and disabling entrance gates.

The squad of terrorists that fired a mortar shell hitting the Erez Crossing was targeted shortly afterwards by an IAF aircraft, in the northern Gaza Strip.

The attack on the Erez Crossing, used for the movement of Arabs who mostly seek medical care and foreign staff members of international organizations in and out of Gaza, was the second one on the transfer point during the week.

The IDF also coordinated 150 truckloads of goods and food at Erez during the past week. Israel has cared for thousands of Gaza Arabs despite the ongoing rocket and mortar shell attacks on southern Israel.

Sunday morning, terrorists in Hamas-controlled Gaza attacked Israel with a Grad rocket, which was intercepted by the Iron Dome system west of Beג€™er Sheva.

5. Scottish Student Expelled for Racist Attack on Yeshiva U Student
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu Student Expelled for Racist Attack on Jew

The St. Andrews University in Scotland has expelled a student for a racist attack on a one-term American student from Yeshiva University in New York who said he was ג€œviolated and devastated.ג€

Chanan Reitblat, 21, is learning at the Scottish university on an exchange program. The expulsion of Paul Donnachie, 19, was ordered after a court in Scotland rejected his and another studentג€™s argument that the attack was ג€œpoliticalג€ and not racial.

The second student, Samuel Colchester, 20, was suspended for one year.

The attack began after the defendants, who had been drinking, jumped on Reitblat and urinated into his sink and then yelled that Israel was "a nation built on terrorism," and "they are all suicide bombers,ג€ AFP reported.

The two students also desecrated an Israeli flag that Reitblat had received from his brother, who served in the IDF, and displayed above his bad.

They also called the yeshiva University student "a Nazi, fascist and terrorist."

Donnachie argued that the incident was political because the display of an Israeli flag is a political act and is a ג€controversial statement which invites criticism.ג€

St. Andrews University stated,  "While such behavior is exceptionally rare, the university will always take the strongest possible sanction against it."

6. US Denies Threat to Cut Off Aid to Palestinian Authority
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu US Denies Threat to Cut Off Aid to PA

The U.S. Consulate in Jerusalem has denied widespread reports that it directly told the Palestinian Authority that American aid would be cut off if it goes to the United Nations for recognition.

A deputy spokesman for the Consulate confirmed to Arutz Sheva Sunday the denial of the reports. Spokeswoman Arlissa Reynolds said that the reported comments made by Consul-General Daniel Rubinstein to PA negotiator Saeb Erekat in Jericho were "not an accurate portrayal of the U.S. position.ג€

Foreign news agencies reported on Friday that Rubinstein said, "If the Palestinian Authority insists on going to the Security Council, the U.S. will use the veto. And in case the Palestinian Authority seeks to upgrade its position at the UN through the General Assembly, the U.S. Congress will take punitive measures against it, including a cut in U.S. aid."

Reynolds reiterated American opposition to the strategy of the Palestinian Authority. She told the Bethlehem-based Ma'an news agency, "We continue to oppose initiatives by the Palestinians in the UN. There is no substitute for serious and substantive negotiations between the parties, and that remains our focus."

Erekat reportedly told Rubinstein, "The right decision is to support Palestine's membership of the UN.ג€

A large number of Congressman in both the Senate and House of Representatives have called for halting American aid to the Palestinian Authority if it goes ahead with its strategy, which seems to have long past the point of no return.

Before leaving for another junket abroad, this time to the European Unionג€™s foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, PA Chairman Mahmoud Abbas  said he would cancel the United Nations track only if Israel would halt all construction for Jews in Judea and Samaria and in large areas of Jerusalem where the PA claims sovereignty.

He also reiterated his refusal to recognize Israel as a ג€œJewish state,ג€ a policy that Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman shows Abbasג€™ true desire to create ג€œa state that is free of Jews in Judea and Samaria, and a hostile takeover from within of the State of Israel. This is also the reason that Abbas and his colleagues are not interested in negotiating with Israel, and have preferred unilateral steps.ג€

Ashtonג€™s opposition to the PA strategy has placed it at odds with the entire Western world for the time. ג€œIt is only through negotiations, and not violence, that the root causes of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, can be addressed,ג€ Ashton said this weekend.

She is visiting Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu Sunday in another attempt to pave the way for what Abbas calls negotiations but which are in effect demands that Israel accept all of the Arab worldג€™s condition for establishing the Palestinian Authority as an independent country.

Abbas reiterated that the demands include Israelג€™s accepting the immigration of foreign Arabs whose host Arab countries have refused to grant them citizenship.

7. Intג€™l News Agency: Abbas Should Tell Ahmadinejad to Shut Up
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu ג€˜Abbas, Tell Ahmadinejad to Shut Upג€™

The Scripps-Howard news agency has published an editorial arguing that if Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas wants the United Nations to recognize the PA as a state, he should tell Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad  to ג€œshut up.ג€

The editorial by Dale McFeatters stated that Ahmadinejad should be on Israelג€™s payroll because his blatant threats to eradicate Israel work to the Jewish stateג€™s interests.

On ג€œAl Qudsג€ day last Friday, when Iran officially mourned Jerusalemג€™s being under Israeli sovereignty, Ahmadinejad said, "Recognition of a Palestinian state is the first step in the liberation of the entire Palestine."

McFeatters noted, "He did not mention what would happen to the Jewish inhabitants of the former Israel, but given Iran's treatment of its own religious minorities like the Baha'is, it's not a happy thought to dwell on.ג€

Ahmadinejad for more than two years has been making unprecedented candid remarks that Israel ג€œshould be wiped off the map,ג€ comments that have been met with disgust among Western nations but which also are taken seriously as Iran tries to develop nuclear capability.

Abbas has abandoned the ג€œpeace processג€ in favor of seeking unilateral recognition of the Palestinian Authority, but McFeatters wrote that ג€œAhmadinejad's incendiary and murderous rhetoric may make some wavering nations think twice about endorsing a resolution of independence, and those who do quietly resolve to do nothing to bring it about.ג€

He added, ג€œThe Mideast nations are keenly aware that Ahmadinejad, safely insulated from Israel by Turkey, Syria, Iraq, Jordan and Saudi Arabia, is in essence only offering to hold the Palestinians' coat if they get into a fight with Israel.ג€

8. Iran Plans to Include Egypt in Terror Axis
by Tzvi Ben Gedalyahu Iran Plans to Include Egypt in Terror Axis

Iran has announced it will renew relations with the new Egyptian regime by sending an ambassador to Cairo in several months.

Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi said the move will come as soon as the new provisional military regime in Egypt says it is ready to renew diplomatic ties that were severed in 1979 after Egypt became the first Arab country to sign a peace treaty with Israel.

Cairoג€™s Foreign Minister Nabil al-Arabi said last April that the new regime is ready to "open a new page" in relations with Iran.

ג€œWe are certain that [bilateral] relations will improve in future,ג€ Salehi said on Saturday, according to the governmentג€™s Press TV.

ג€œIran and Egypt are two important countries whose relations are rooted in history,ג€ the Iranian minister added, saying that during the past two decades bilateral ties had been affected by the policies of Egypt's former rulers, meaning ousted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak.

A northern axis of Iran, Hizbullah-dominated Lebanon and Syria already threatens Israel from the north. Adding Egypt, which is under growing influence by the Muslim Brotherhood, to the terror axis would be a bonanza for Hamas-controlled Gaza.

The Iranian foreign minister rejected charges by the United States that the Islamic republic sponsors terrorism in Iraq.

ג€œIs our support of Hizbullah that legitimately defends its country terrorism?ג€ he asked rhetorically. ג€œIs spiritual support of Hamas whose country has been occupied terrorism? If this is terrorism they must reconsider [their definition].

"Development of the Iran-Egypt relations contributes to stability, security and peace in the region," Salehi emphasized, expressing confidence that the relations between the two countries will be restored in the near future.
