CARETAKER GOVERNMENT IN ATHENS?
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Greece Backs Away from Referendum Plans
Amid growing fears of a government collapse in Athens, Prime Minister
Giorgios Papandreou on Thursday scrapped plans for a bailout referendum
and moved to start talks on a national unity government. He has,
however, refused to step down, saying that new elections would mean a
Greek exit from the euro zone.

'A Stress Test For Our Democratic Traditions'
Greece is preparing for the prospect of referendum on the euro rescue
package and its prime minister faces a risky confidence vote this
Friday. Either vote could lead to massive tumult in Europe. German
papers on Thursday weigh the importance of democracy and the common
currency.

TOUGH WORDS
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Merkel and Sarkozy Halt Payments to Athens
Chancellor Merkel and President Sarkozy had harsh words for Greece on
Wednesday, warning: "We will not allow the euro to be destroyed." They
have also halted bailout payments pending the approaching Greek
referendum. The idea of Greece exiting the euro, it seems, is no longer
a taboo.

Greece Split Ahead of Tough Choices in Athens
The future of the country is at stake. But for the moment, there are
more questions than answers in Athens. Many Greeks are skeptical of
plans for a referendum on the euro bailout. On Thursday, it appeared
their prime minister might be changing his tune as well. Reports have
emerged he may form an emergency government to circumvent the
controversial vote.

A Meeting of Minds on Germany's 'Occupy' Movement
The "Occupy" movement has garnered support from all parts of the world,
including Germany, where protestors have set up camp in front of the
European Central Bank in Frankfurt. In an interview, SPIEGEL talks to
Axel Fialka and Alexander Sack from the movement, and to Commerzbank CEO
Martin Blessing.

Experts Predict Global Population Will Plateau
The 7-billionth human being was born last week as the UN issued dire
warnings of an exploding global population. But birth rates are actually
in free fall worldwide. Experts predict that the world's population will
start shrinking in 2060 and that -- with a bit of imaginative
policymaking -- the birth and death rates could actually balance out.

GADHAFI'S FORMER GERMAN FLORIST
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Only the Best for Libya's Tasteful Tyrant
Though he pretended to be the frugal son of a Bedouin, Libyan dictator
Moammar Gadhafi lived a life of extravagant luxury, complete with his
own private jumbo jet. When he went looking for just the right flower
arrangements on board, he turned to a Hamburg-based florist who
initially had no idea who her client was.

A Trip to Mars -- Without Leaving Russia
A simulated mission to Mars is drawing to a close in Moscow after 520
days. The test astronauts will be weak and pale, but an international
team of researchers has learned a number of vital medical lessons. Now
German scientists hope to start a more modern test of manned space
flight near Cologne.
