The Gambia: Arresting and detaining court reporters damages public trust in the judiciary

ARTICLE 19 is concerned about the arbitrary arrest and detention of three Gambian journalists who were investigated for alleged contempt of court. These actions against journalists reporting on court cases prevented them from informing the public about the work of the judiciary. ARTICLE 19 calls on the Gambian authorities to provide remedies for the violations of the journalists’ rights to liberty and freedom of expression and to ensure that the media is free to report legal proceedings in the public interest.Read more >

Tunisia: Draft proposition on media regulation insufficient and incompatible with international standards

ARTICLE 19 is concerned about a draft Article on media regulation at the Constituent Assembly of Tunisia. The Article creates a structure of regulatory control over all media which is not compatible with the basic principles of democracy. The Article contains insufficient safeguards for media freedom. Moreover despite its fundamental character the Article was drafted without public debates.Read more >

England and Wales: Court overturns absurd conviction for Twitter joke

The conviction of Paul Chambers was quashed today following the Divisional Court's judgment that his Tweet in January 2010 in which he jokingly threatened to blow up Nottingham's Robin Hood airport was not objectively 'menacing' contrary to section 127 of the Communications Act 2003. ARTICLE 19 intervened in the case arguing that criminalising jokes online is a violation of the right to freedom of expression. Read more>
