Eritrea: A Nation Silenced
In this report, ARTICLE 19 assesses the situation for media
freedom and the right to freedom of expression and information in
Eritrea. The report demonstrates the stark gulf that exists in the
country between formal legal protections for the right to freedom of
expression and information at the international and regional level, and
the realities for journalists on the ground - whose attempts to navigate
repressive domestic laws and practices have ended them in prison or

Iryna Khalip remembers the day she became an activist. On 2 April 1997,
while covering a protest against the proposed reunification of Belarus
with Russia, she witnessed her father, a documentary filmmaker, get
beaten unconscious. She herself was clubbed by riot police.

South American states must engage with reform of the Inter-American Human Rights System
ARTICLE 19 makes a plea for greater awareness and more involvement in
the Americas on plans to reform the Inter-American System for the
Protection of Human Rights. ARTICLE 19 is greatly concerned that
countries across the region are not taking international negotiations
seriously and is urging states to engage fully in this process to make
sure that any changes made strengthen human rights in the region and not
weaken them.

Greece: Press freedom under threat by government attempts to limit criticism
ARTICLE 19 is concerned about recent attacks on freedom of expression in
Greece. At a time of economic crisis and political instability, the
Greek authorities are attempting to increase control over the media and
to limit criticism of the government. ARTICLE 19 views such attempts as
a direct attack on democracy which must not be tolerated. It is not an
appropriate response for a democratic European government to limit press
freedom in order to protect political power.

Azerbaijan: Demand for the immediate release of jailed protesters
A week on from a peaceful protest against government corruption in Baku
in which 70 people were arrested, ARTICLE 19 is demanding the immediate
release of the 13 protesters who remain behind bars. The Azerbaijani
authorities must drop all charges and all penalties against those who
were protesting. ARTICLE 19 is also urging the Parliament to reject
plans to increase the severity of sanctions for taking part in
‘unauthorised’ protests. The right to peaceful protest is a vital part
of freedom of expression and must be protected.
