Russia: Dangerous new measures on ‘foreign agents’ come into force controlling political and human rights work
Dangerous changes to legislation come into force in Russia today which threaten freedom of expression. A new Federal Law requires all non-governmental, non-commercial organisations (NCO’s) that receive foreign funding and are engaged in ‘political activities’ to register as a ‘foreign agent.’ Failure to do so could result in fines, bans or imprisonment. ARTICLE 19 is calling for this law to be scrapped, as it could be used to attack the important work of human rights organisations. ASEAN: ARTICLE 19 denounces the newly passed “human rights” declaration as fundamentally flawed
ARTICLE 19 condemns the adoption of the “human rights declaration” by the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) on 18 November 2012. The Declaration subjugates rights to the “regional and national context,” which fundamentally undermines the long accepted idea of universal human rights. The passage of this Declaration is a clear sign that all ASEAN member states do not value and respect international human rights standards and that they have blatantly ignored concerns raised by their own people and from the international community.

Southeast Asia: Obama must speak for those who are silenced on his visit
President Obama must use his historic trip to Southeast Asia to speak for those who are systematically silenced in the region. The President must push for serious reform in Burma, Thailand and Cambodia to protect free speech, freedom of information and freedom of assembly. ARTICLE 19 has written to the President outlining a series of concerns that urgently need attention to ensure that national leaders respect, protect and promote fundamental human rights, which are being routinely violated in all three countries.

Ethiopia: Authorities must drop terrorism charges against journalist who reported on anti-government protests
ARTICLE 19 calls for the Ethiopian authorities to drop all charges against Yusuf Getachew, a journalist for the publication Ye’Muslimoch Guday (Muslim Affairs) who was charged on October 29 under the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation 2009. ARTICLE 19 urges the Ethiopian government to stop using the Anti-Terrorism Proclamation 2009 to suppress political criticism and calls for an urgent review to bring this legislation with international standards to protect freedom of expression.
