Kerry Meets Saakashvili in Washington

Tbilisi: U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry met President Saakashvili in Washington on May 1 and reiterated U.S. support to Georgia's NATO integration and welcomed "the democratic transition that has been taking place" in Georgia.

"We are very grateful in the United States for the assistance that Georgia has given us with respect to Afghanistan. Georgia is the largest contributor of troops of a non-NATO country. And they have also made significant commitments with respect to post-2014," Kerry said in remarks for the press before meeting President Saakashvili in the Department of State.

"Just as importantly, we are very supportive of Georgia’s aspirations with respect to NATO and Europe," he said.

"We applaud the democratic transition that has been taking place...I know is committed to continue the work for the democratic aspirations of the Rose Revolution," Kerry said of Saakashvili, whom he describe as a good friend.

President Saakashvili said in his remarks before the meeting: "Of course we are here to talk about NATO."

"We want American support for NATO. We want America’s support of further Euro-Atlantic integration at this very difficult and crucial moment for Georgia’s democracy and Georgia’s survival," said Saakashvili.

"And certainly we want to see America strong. And I think instrumental in that is having you in this office as well, with your experience, with your international renome, contacts, because we have admired you for all these years as a senator, a great friend, as a really knowledgeable person," said Saakashvili, who thanked Kerry for visiting and supporting Georgia after the August, 2008 war with Russia when he was a Senator.

Secretary of State's meeting with Saakashvili came one week after John Kerry met Georgia's foreign minister, Maia Panjikidze, in Brussels on April 24.

Eight NATO soldiers, one German, killed in Afghanistan attacks

The German military says one of its soldiers was killed and another wounded in an insurgent attack in northern Afghanistan on Saturday. A total of eight NATO soldiers were killed in separate attacks on the same day.

In a statement released on Sunday, the German military, or Bundeswehr, confirmed one of its special forces soldiers was killed during a joint operation with Afghan forces near the northern city of Baghlan. The statement says insurgents opened fire on the Afghan and NATO International Security Assistance Force troops.

"In the subsequent battle damage assessment the Afghan and ISAF forces again came under fire," the Bundeswehr said.

"A German soldier was killed and a German soldier wounded."

...

Earlier on Saturday, five US soldiers were killed by a Tabliban roadside bomb blast in southern Afghanistan, while two other NATO troops were shot dead by an Afghan army soldier in the west of the country.

Saturday's attacks are the latest against foreign troops since the Taliban began their spring offensive a week ago. However NATO has said that most shootings arise from cultural misunderstandings or personal grudges rather than militant plots.

Last week, three British soldiers were killed when their armored vehicle hit a bomb in the southern province of Helmand.

ISAF loses 7 troops to explosion, insider attack
By Mohammad Younus Naseh

KABUL: The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) lost seven service members in two separate attacks in Afghanistan on Saturday - a deadly day for the foreign troops.

Five US troops were killed in a roadside bombing in the Maiwand district of southern Kandahar province, the governor’s office said. The NATO-led force and the US military also verified the explosion.

Another two ISAF troops were killed when an Afghan National Army (ANA) soldier turned his weapon on them in western Afghanistan. “The incident is currently under investigation,” the alliance said, without giving further details.

In 2012, the increasing green-on-blue assaults accounted for about 15 percent of coalition deaths - estimated at more than 60. There has been a steady increase in NATO-led soldiers’ casualties since the start Taliban’s summer offensive last week.

According to the website http://icasualties.org, which tracks coalition casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq, so far 47 NATO soldiers, including 33 Americans, have been killed in Afghanistan this year. Last year, 405 foreign troops were killed in the country.

Syria-Israel: on the eve of war?
Konstantin Garibov

Syrian missiles have been directed against Israel and the occupied Palestinian territories after Israeli warplanes struck several military facilities near the Syrian capital Damascus late last week.

According to Syrian sources, Damascus will launch missile strikes on “specific targets” in case of a new aggression. Additionally, Damascus has given the green light to Palestinian groups carrying out military operations against Israel in the Golan Heights.

For its part, Israel deployed two batteries of its Iron Dome rocket defense system to the Syrian-Israeli border in anticipation of retaliation from Damascus, which has already described Israel’s airstrikes as a “declaration of war.”

On April 5, Israeli warplanes struck areas outside Damascus as they targeted a weapons cache and a military research center. Israel’s Haaretz newspaper, however, reported that the planes targeted a shipment of Iranian-made guided missiles, believed to be bound for Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group.

Some sources say that about 300 soldiers were killed in the strikes, while others put the death toll at 4 people.

Meanwhile, Syria’s Information Minister Omran al-Zohbi has warned that Israel’s aggression may lead to a full-fledged war in the region.

“Israel’s airstrikes open the door wide to all possibilities in the region. These airstrikes confirm coordination between Israel and terrorist groups,” Al-Zohbi said.

The May 5 attack was the second such strike Israel has launched in the past three days. On Friday, Israeli warplanes bombed a convoy carrying Iranian-made missiles from Syria to Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, says Yevgeny Satanovsky, head of the Moscow-based Institute for Middle Eastern Studies.

“All that has happened may well be seen as a tacit rehearsal of a potential war between Iran and Israel...,” Satanovsky said.

In a statement on Monday, the Egyptian President’s press service condemned Israel’s airstrikes on Syria that it said violate international law and further exacerbate the situation in the region.

The Arab League, for its part, urged the UN Security Council to “act immediately” to end the attacks.

In the meantime, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu began his visit to China on Monday, refusing to comment on his country’s airstrikes on Syria.

There were reports about Israel’s Cabinet meeting ahead of Netanyahu visit, with no results made public. Other senior Israeli officials also refused to comment on the airstrikes.
