IDAHO-T: Freedom of expression rights of LGBT people must be strengthened

On the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO-T) 2013, ARTICLE 19 calls on states to strengthen protections of the right to freedom of expression for lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) people, and to end impunity for violence against LGBT people and human rights defenders. Read more >

Azerbaijan: New legislative amendments further erode rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly

The International Partnership Group for Azerbaijan (IPGA) strongly condemns a series of repressive legislative amendments that Azerbaijan’s National Assembly (Milli Majlis) adopted on 14 May 2013. The amendments were submitted by the prosecutor-general’s office to a parliamentary commission two weeks before and are being enacted in the run-up to October’s Presidential election. Read more >

One year after access to information law 12.527/2011 was adopted, a new study conducted by ARTICLE 19 reveals that only 44% of public bodies respond satisfactorily to information requests from individuals and non-governmental organisations. Read more >

Five Years Too Many

14 May 2013 marks the fifth anniversary of the arrest of the 7 Baha'i representatives of the Baha'i community in Iran. As part of the global campaign 'Five Years Too many', the Iranian human rights lawyer Ms Mahnaz Parakand who represented the seven Baha'i leaders and herself fled Iran fearing execution, addressed the Law Society of England and Wales and the Bar Human Rights Committee with regard to the trial.
