American Journalist Executed 
American journalist Jim Foley was mourned around the world Wednesday. His mother said of her slain son, “he was strong, courageous and loving to the end.” President Obama called the beheading “appalling” and vowed to pursue his killers, members of the militant group ISIS. Earlier this summer, the U.S. military tried to rescue Foley and several other hostages in Syria, reports NBC’s Andrea Mitchell.

Militant ISIS’ Growing Threat 
James Foley fell into the hands of the world’s most dangerous group, ISIS, and now there is growing worry its threat extends well beyond the borders of Syria and Iraq. The last voice Foley heard — that of his murderer — was thought by some to be a British accent. Officials say the militant group has between 7,000 and 12,000 foreign fighters among its members.
