Betting on India

Written by Steven Hansen
I have spent the majority of my life outside the USA. My view of the world is very different than most all people both in and outside the USA. One thing I have learned - that the perceptions or conclusions of a non-native writing on a country are almost certainly wrong.

What We Read Today 10 January 2015

Econintersect: Every day our editors collect the most interesting things they find from around the internet and present a summary "reading list" which will include very brief summaries (and sometimes longer ones) of why each item has gotten our attention. Suggestions from readers for "reading list" items are gratefully reviewed, although sometimes space limits the number included.
Europe Stocks Drop for Second Week as Banks Fall to 16-Month Low (Namitha Jagadeesh and Jonathan Morgan, Bloomberg) In the longest losing streak in almost three months, the Stoxx Europe 600 Index lost 1.3% to 337.93 on above average volume. Biggest concerns: (1) ECB's (European Central Bank) bond-buying plans won't be enough to shore up the economy; and (2) a U.S. employment report showed a drop in hourly earnings. Today's decline brought the measure down 1% for the week.

Art Donovan On The Tonight Show

This must be the best interview by any football player...ever. To this day it was the greatest sports talk show of all time and 90% of it was Artie Donovan telling stories about the old days. by Amy Farber - Liberty Street Economics, Federal Reserve Bank of New York
Metaphors, similes, analogies - we know they're not the same thing, but they can do pretty much the same job when illustrating what monetary policy is like (or what anything is like). Here are a few such monetary policy comparisons from some notable economists and commentators. For some reason, they all seem to involve physics. More exist, of course.

Sun and Wind could Finally Make Electricity 'too Cheap to Meter'

by Roger Kemp, The Conversation
Our children will enjoy in their homes electrical energy too cheap to meter.- Lewis L Strauss, chair of the US Atomic Energy Commission, 1954.
When Strauss first coined the phrase above he was thinking of hydrogen fusion, a technology that always seems to be a tantalising 30 years away. However even without futuristic new technology the British electricity system may actually approach this mythical situation of energy that is 'too cheap to meter'.

The Chicken Parliament

by Rudo de Ruijter
Once upon a time, in a village in the country, there was a farm with a big poultry-house. During the day the chickens walked outside and in the evening they went inside on their roosts. Although most often the same cocks and hens claimed the best places, things went generally peacefully and friendly.
