On July 7, 2005 bombings on the London subway system and a bus killed 52 people and injured 700. As the list of unanswered questions and inconsistencies about the attacks continued to grow, blame was quickly laid on ‘al Qaeda’.

The effects of the London bombings were immediate: There was a renewed commitment by Western leaders to the ‘war on terror’. Most other stories and scandals were wiped off newspaper front pages, including UK Prime Minister Tony Blair’s plummeting popularity.

Winston Churchill famously characterised Russia as “a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.”

It’s apt, then, that the father of the Russian space program – perhaps of all space programs – was an ascetic librarian who taught that humanity should work for the physical resurrection of all the dead.

Nikolai Fyodorov (whose name is also transliterated as Fedorov; 1829–1903) was the first man to seriously theorise about interplanetary travel. He also coined the term “spaceship Earth” to convey a sense of humanity’s interconnection with the cosmos.

Scientists from Northumbria, Edinburgh, and Newcastle have theorized that dry ice or carbon dioxide, which is in abundance on Mars, could power human colonies on the Red Planet in the future.

A research published in Nature Communications has proposed a new engine that would harvest energy from dry ice to generate power on Mars.

NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, based on the seasonal appearance of gullies on the planet’s surface, suggests that dry ice occurs naturally and is in good supply on the Red Planet.
