A man allegedly used a can of wasp spray against a TSA agent in New Orleans before pulling out a machete and stabbing another agent at the Louis Armstrong International Airport near New Orleans, Louisiana, according to local media.
Police are currently investigating the incident and officials said the airport has now been secured. It appears that two Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents were injured in an attack at a security checkpoint and that the man responsible for the violence has been killed. The assailant has been transported to a hospital but is not responding, WVUE reported.
The conditions of the TSA agents have not been confirmed.
According to images and accounts from the scene posted on social media, a TSA agent was stabbed by the attacker. Photographs show a cold weapon on the ground that looks like a machete.
Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand told WVUE that a man identified as Richard White was responsible for the violence. He allegedly used a can of wasp spray on a TSA agent who confronted him at a checkpoint, then took out a machete and struck another agent.
Police then shot the man responsible in the face and the chest, he said. An image from Twitter reportedly shows one agent being treated. In a statement, Mayor Mitch Landrieu said the situation “is under control and the airport is secure.”
“There is no threat to the public at this time, and the airport is returning to normal operations. We expect Concourse B – where the incident occurred – to fully reopen tomorrow.

A Republican-led congressional panel has formally requested that Hillary Clinton turn over her private computer server, which she told reporters she used for government business when she was Secretary of State from 2009-2013.
The request, sent in a letter to Clinton’s lawyer on Thursday, was made by Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), who heads the House Select Committee on Benghazi panel, Reuters reported. It asks that the server be handed over to the State Department’s Inspector General or to another neutral third party. The letter gives Clinton until April 3 to respond or Gowdy will discuss other ways to obtain the server with House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner.
“The Committee must have objective assurances it, and by extension the House of Representatives as a whole, has received all relevant information requested and necessary for a thorough investigation into what happened before, during and after the attacks in Benghazi, Libya,” Gowdy wrote in the letter.
“More broadly, the equities in these emails extend beyond this Committee. The House of Representatives and the American people are entitled to a complete accounting of the Secretary’s official record during he time as Secretary of State.”
It is the latest twist in the press and government’s scrutiny over the former secretary of state’s use of a personal email address to conduct government business. There is concern that Clinton’s email was account was not as secure as the State Department’s network, leaving her correspondence vulnerable to hackers and foreign nations.
Clinton’s spokesman Nick Merrill said in a statement that the American people will be able to see relevant emails when they are released by the State Department.
“We’ve turned over all of her work emails, and taken the extraordinary step of asking the State Department to release all of them. When they are released, which we hope to be soon, it will offer an unprecedented opportunity for the American people to see for themselves that they are all there and then some,” he said.

The Golden State will get a $1 billion package to provide immediate relief to try and stem future water problems. Officials assure the population that they will not run out of water completely as the state enters its fourth year of drought.
On Thursday state governor Jerry Brown and a bipartisan group of state lawmakers announced a one billion dollar package to provide immediate relief to try and stem future problems.
“This is a struggle, something we’re going to have to live with. For how long we’re not sure,” said Brown during a press conference.
Of the $1 billion in emergency aid, $660 million of that is for flood prevention, which Brown explained is linked, as they are both related to climate change.
The emergency funding legislation comes just two days after a raft of other measures designed to limit water use across California. Watering lawns and gardens will be limited to two days a week and restaurants will only be able to offer tap water on request.
“We have been in multiyear droughts and extended dry periods a number of times in the past, and we will be in the future,” said Ted Thomas, a spokesman for the California Department of Water Resources, as cited by the LA Times
“In periods like this there will be shortages, of course, but the state as a whole is not going to run dry in a year or two years.”
The new regulations do not really ask much of residents and Jay Famiglietti, a senior water scientist from NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California, believes that water should be rationed.
“Because of the severity of the situation, I do think the public is ready for it,” he said, as quoted by Time magazine.
Charles Stringer, chair of the Regional Water Board in Southern California, told Time magazine that much more needs to be done.
“We’re trying to get where we need to go without too much pain and sacrifice. But what the water experts and policy makers are saying with increasing urgency is that’s not possible,” he said.
It was also unclear, how the current regulations would be enforced, without the manpower to do it.
In a recent poll 94 percent of residents said that they thought the drought was “serious” and yet experts insist that California is not in danger of running out of water in the next two years.
“We have been in multiyear droughts and extended dry periods a number of times in the past, and we will be in the future. In periods like this there will be shortages, of course, but the state as a whole is not going to run dry in a year or two years,” Ted Thomas, a spokesman for the California Department of Water Resources, told the LA Times.
But Famiglietti does not agree and believes state reservoirs have only about a year’s water supply left and that groundwater reserves are already depleted.

Nearly 10 percent of some 2,000 species of European wild bees face extinction, says a recent study, adding that the drivers behind such a mass disappearance of nature’s top pollinators include the use of insecticides, fertilizers, and climate change.
“Overall, 9.2 percent of bees are considered threatened in Europe, while at the EU-27 level, 9.1 percent are threatened with extinction,” says a new report published as a part of the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) European Red List of Bees project.
The study, co-funded by the European Commission, gives information about 1,965 wild bee species in Europe, including their status, distribution and the dangers they face.
The main threats to bee survival are connected with modern agriculture, says the report, adding that these hazards include intensive arable farming, livestock farming and the continued presence of commercial timber plantations. Climate change may also contribute to mass bee extinction.
Bees “are threatened with extinction in Europe mainly due to habitat loss as a result of agriculture intensification (e.g., changes in agricultural practices including the use of pesticides and fertilizers), urban development, increased frequency of fires and climate change,” says the study.
Also herbicides can also negatively affect bee diversity, as they “can reduce the availability of flowers on which bees depend and delay the flowering, so the timing between the period when food is most needed by pollinators and food availability is disrupted.”
“Our quality of life – and our future – depends on the many services that nature provides for free. Pollination is one of these services, so it is very worrying to learn that some of our top pollinators [bees]are at risk!” said Karmenu Vella, European Commissioner for Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries.
“If we don’t address the reasons behind this decline in wild bees, and act urgently to stop it, we could pay a very heavy price indeed,” he added.

Los Angeles police spent $22,000 and weeks of intense, advanced planning to take an ex-mafia member serving two life sentences for murder out of prison so he could address dozens of business leaders – without the authority to do so, no less.
First reported by the Los Angeles Times, a new report by the inspector general for the Los Angeles Police Department found that officials relied on a court order that had been expired for more than two years in order to take Rene “Boxer” Enriquez out of prison in late January. It also found that the order only allowed Enriquez to leave in the event that he was helping officials prosecute a murder case.
Nonetheless, law enforcement assigned several officers to develop an operational plan that would transport Enriquez – who ordered hits as part of the Mexican Mafia and admitted to raping a woman before being sentenced for murdering two people – to the site of a private business event held by the Young Presidents’ Organization (YPO), the report stated.
In fact, plans were so extensive that the operational team developed different routes with which to transport Enriquez, identified safe houses in case the operation was “compromised” and inspected the YPO venue. A helicopter even flew along the primary route before the event in order to “survey” it.
All of this planning took about two and a half days to complete and cost thousands of dollars in taxpayer funds, the report said.
The YPO had requested Enriquez as a guest, though an LAPD command officer told the chief of police that the event was a “law enforcement training event designed predominantly for members of the Major Cities Chiefs Association” and the Los Angeles County Police Chiefs’ Association.” The YPO would only be there as secondary participants.
However, 150 YPO members ended up attending the evet, while just 14 LAPD members were there.
Additionally, invitations for the event made no mention that it was related to the LAPD or law enforcement in general, the inspector general wrote. Instead, the invitation described its guest speaker as someone who “had never spoken” to the members and “would never speak to them again.”
“You will be…amazed, shocked, blown away and maybe even a little scared,” it read, according to the report. On Friday, the LAPD told the LA Times that a personnel complaint investigation into the issue has been launched “based on the contents of the report.”
Enriquez has become a noteworthy figure in LA’s justice system. He has renounced the mafia, cooperated with law enforcement and served as an expert witness on several gang-related cases – behavior that has earned him praise from some law enforcement agencies. He has also spoken at multiple conferences and training sessions despite his criminal past.
