 The gun used to fatally shoot a woman on the San Francisco Embarcadero belonged to a federal agent, sources confirmed Tuesday. Kathryn Steinle, 32, was shot once in the back Wednesday while strolling on the tourist-friendly waterfront with her father. She died at a hospital a short time later. Juan Francisco Lopez-Sanchez, 52, pleaded not guilty earlier Tuesday to a murder charge and was being held on $5 million bail. In an interview with KGO-TV, which first reported the gun’s connection to the federal agent, Lopez-Sanchez said he had found the weapon wrapped in a T-shirt on the ground near a bench, and that it had accidentally fired when he touched it. But he also said he had taken strong sleeping pills and his memory was murky. No additional details about the gun were available Tuesday. The district attorney’s office declined to comment. San Francisco is among a number of counties and a handful of states that do not honor many requests by immigration authorities to hold inmates beyond their release date in order to hand them over for deportation. In this case, a request by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement that they be notified of his release date was disregarded. He was released to the streets of San Francisco in April when 20-year-old charges against him were dismissed and was apparently homeless until the shooting.  The past two weeks 3 alternative doctors (2 MD’s and 1 DC, PhD) who were found dead. The only update on the third one, Dr. Teresa Sievers MD, is that they have absolutely no suspects in mind, and her husband and kids were out of state in Connecticut at a family reunion that she left early to get home to see patients. Here most recent article from NBC. Click through at your own risk. Now, in just a few days, we have 2 more doctors missing. The first is Dr. Fitzpatrick MD of North Dakota who went missing in or around July 3rd. NBC is reporting on his disappearance. Little else is known at this time. Note: Initially it was reported he was a DO, but now we see that’s another Patrick Fitzpatrick in the area. This doctor specializes in Ophthalmology and is an MD. From all accounts it appears he practiced in North Dakota, but was found missing in neighboring Montana. from the NBC article about Dr. gone missing: The Gallatin County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue team is currently searching for a 74-year-old North Dakota Doctor.The second missing doctor’s story is just as mysterious. His name is Dr. Jeffrey Whiteside MD (Pulmonologist and sleep doctor) of Wisconsin and hasn’t been seen since June 29th when he was with his family on an outing and just walked away. From the article on the missing MD: Dr. Whiteside is a physician in the Fox Valley area and lives in Grand Chute, Wisconsin. He has a boat slip and vacation cabin in Ephraim. Dr. Whiteside was with family on 06-29-15 at the boat slip in Ephraim when he walked away. He is believed to be on foot and still in the northern Door Co. area to the best of our knowledge. His family and office have not heard from him and are very concerned about his well-being.We cannot speculate as to how “alternative” these two doctors were, if at all. There have been people posting on social media that one of them were, but we cannot confirm that at this time. We hope they are found soon alive and well. Please call if you have any information as to the mysterious disappearance of either one. Not to throw a monkey wrench in the mix, but the same day Dr. Bradstreet’s body was found in here in the South East US, three bodies of three doctors were found in Mexico. They were traveling to the state capital to do paperwork. Here’s a bit of info on those 3 doctors found (which are different than the three doctors found at the beginning of the article) If we count these three too, that would be 6 doctors found dead within 2 weeks and 2 more currently missing. That’s just in the US and Mexico. From the article on the doctors found in Mexico: Prosecutors say four bodies discovered June 19 in the southern Mexico state of Guerrero are those of three doctors and a lawyer who had been reported missing earlier in the month.I have no idea if these three doctors were “alternative” “holistic” or any info of them at all at this time. I’ll keep reporting on all missing doctors, and again, our hearts go out the all the families of the doctors who were found dead. We hope they get to the bottom of it on each of those cases. I have been with a wel known outspoken holistic physician for 6 years so of course, this worries me and I’m concerned for all involved. As for the two missing doctors – we hope they are found alive and well very soon.  Encryption is a threat to public safety, the FBI director argued before testifying at a Senate hearing. Crypto experts and the tech industry oppose demands by US officials for “back door” keys to encrypted software as both harmful and impractical. In a guest post on the Lawfare blog, FBI Director James Comey argued that “to protect the public, the government sometimes needs to be able to see an individual’s stuff,” though only “under appropriate circumstances and with appropriate oversight.” Encryption denies the government that ability, which “will affect public safety,” Comey wrote, citing the example of Islamic State “operators in Syria” using encrypted chats to recruit “dozens of troubled Americans to kill people.” “I really am not a maniac (or at least my family says so). But my job is to try to keep people safe,” he wrote, calling for a “robust debate” to resolve the conflict between privacy and security. Comey is scheduled to appear before the Senate Intelligence and Judiciary Committees on Wednesday, and where he is expected to argue that commercial encryption is interfering with the bureau’s investigations of criminals and terrorists. Critics have blasted the government’s anti-encryption campaign as dangerous and misguided, arguing that the FBI’s own records – when actually kept and shown to the public – show that the bureau has had little trouble cracking the communications of terror suspects. “Given the large number of investigative tools available to the FBI… the notion that encryption imperils all law enforcement operations is ludicrous,” Patrick Eddington of the Cato Institute wrote in The Hill newspaper. Following NSA whistleblower Edward Snowden’s revelations of US spying in 2013, American companies lost billions of dollars as overseas clients fled from cloud services and software they saw as compromised. A 2013 estimate by Forrester Research projected the possible losses at $180 billion by 2016, just in the field of cloud computing. In response, companies like Apple, Google and Yahoo embraced encryption as a way to assure their clients that nobody – not even the government – could access their data. Federal officials like Comey, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and NSA Director Admiral Michael Rogers have called on the tech industry to give the government keys to their ciphers. Tech executives say that this would open them up to similar demands from other governments, and undermine both the public perception and actual safety of their software. “If we are going to make a technological system that will let Comey catch the bad guy that he wants to catch … we have to let everybody who is a state actor clamp down and be able to get what they want,” Jon Callas, chief technologist of the encrypted communications company Silent Circle, told the Christian Science Monitor’s Passcode. “There’s no VIP room; it doesn’t exist,” Scott Montgomery, vice president and chief technology strategist for Intel Security, said. “If there’s a back door, there’s a back door for everybody.” “It’s clear that other countries would just not accept American products that have a back door built into them for the US government,” Alex Stamos, former chief information security officer at Yahoo and now chief security officer at Facebook, said. “There’s no way they’re going to be OK with that.” Some of the world’s foremost cryptographers, security specialists and computer scientists from the US and the UK also oppose the government’s proposal. In a paper to be published Wednesday, 13 of them argue that there is no viable technical solution that would grant governments “exceptional access” to encrypted data without putting it all at risk. In light of recent massive security breaches at the Office of Personnel Management, the State Department and the White House, the government simply cannot be trusted to keep the keys safe from hackers, the experts told the New York Times. “The government’s proposals for exceptional access are wrong in principle and unworkable in practice,” said Ross Anderson, a professor of security engineering at Cambridge and one of the paper’s authors.  Biologists are trying to find the reason thousands of nesting birds have abandoned Seahorse Key off Florida’s Gulf Coast. The little blue herons, roseate spoonbills, snowy egrets, pelicans and other birds left the island all at once in May. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service biologist Vic Doig said what was once the largest bird colony on the state’s Gulf Coast is now a “dead zone.” Scientists have found no indication that disease, contaminants or predators are to blame. The abandonment concerns biologists because it could have a ripple effect: Many bird species here return year after year to the same nesting sites. Biologist also don’t know how the disappearance will affect the island’s other animals, some of which rely on the birds to survive.  The 2016 presidential campaign is just starting to heat up, but Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton has already declared that her latest campaign is her ‘last rodeo’ in politics. Clinton made the comment on Tuesday while addressing voters in Iowa City. At the campaign stop, she said that she hopes her campaign will inspire other Americans to go into public service and to help improve the country’s future. “When people diss the government – we’re really dissing ourselves and dissing our democracy,” Clinton said, as quoted by The Hill newspaper. “This is my last rodeo, and I believe that we can leave not just the country in good shape for the future, but we can get a deep bench of young people to decide that they want to go into politics.” “I want people’s lives to be better when I finish as your president than when I started,” she added. Of course, if Clinton manages to win the presidency in 2016, chances are high that she’ll have one more campaign to run regardless, considering that she would likely seek reelection after four years. The former Secretary of State, not to mention overwhelming favorite to secure the Democratic nomination, also addressed a number of issues and fielded questions from reporters – the latter being a rare sight since she formally entered the race earlier this year. She cautioned that electing a Republican in 2016 would mean “the end of the Affordable Care Act,” which has reduced the uninsured rate in the US. Nearly every GOP candidate has pledged to repeal the healthcare law.  Ten years after the London 7/7 bombings killed 52 people in the British capital, residents of the city are being asked to ‘Walk Together’ in remembrance of the victims. Commuters are encouraged to exit public transport a stop early and walk to their destination, to remember those who lost their lives when three Tube stations and a bus were bombed on July 7, 2005. The ‘Walk Together’ initiative is the brainchild of the think-tank British Future, aimed at remembering the hours following the attacks, when thousands walked through London’s streets after public transport services shut down. Events are also taking place throughout the capital city on Tuesday. Prince William is expected to attend a service in Hyde Park, with police, ambulance and fire crews laying wreaths at the site. St. Paul’s Cathedral hosted a service attended by the families of those who died, as well as many who were injured. A minute’s silence was marked by a flood of petals falling from the dome, and four candles lit to remember the four bombing sites. London Underground trains came to a halt at 11:30am local time, allowing passengers a minute of silence. The minute of silence was also observed at Wimbledon.  New color images from NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft show two very different faces of the mysterious dwarf planet, one with a series of intriguing spots along the equator that are evenly spaced. Each of the spots is about 300 miles in diameter, with a surface area that’s roughly the size of the state of Missouri. Scientists have yet to see anything quite like the dark spots; their presence has piqued the interest of the New Horizons science team, due to the remarkable consistency in their spacing and size. While the origin of the spots is a mystery for now, the answer may be revealed as the spacecraft continues its approach to the mysterious dwarf planet. “It’s a real puzzle—we don’t know what the spots are, and we can’t wait to find out,” said New Horizons principal investigator Alan Stern of the Southwest Research Institute, Boulder. “Also puzzling is the longstanding and dramatic difference in the colors and appearance of Pluto compared to its darker and grayer moon Charon.” New Horizons team members combined black-and-white images of Pluto and Charon from the spacecraft’s Long-Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) with lower-resolution color data from the Ralph instrument to produce these views. We see the planet and its largest moon in approximately true color, that is, the way they would appear if you were riding on the New Horizons spacecraft. About half of Pluto is imaged, which means features shown near the bottom of the dwarf planet are at approximately at the equatorial line. If Pluto has clouds, New Horizons can detect them. Both the high-resolution LORRI imager and the Ralph color imager will be used to look for clouds across the face of Pluto during its approach and departure from the planet. “We’re looking for clouds in our images using a number of techniques,” said science team postdoc Kelsi Singer of the Southwest Research Institute, “If we find clouds, their presence will allow us to track the speeds and directions of Pluto’s winds.” For more than two decades, planetary scientists have raced to get a spacecraft to Pluto against predictions that its atmosphere would disappear—literally freezing onto the surface—before it could be explored. This week, planetary scientists using ground-based telescopes and NASA’s SOFIA airborne observatory confirmed that “Pluto’s atmosphere is alive and well, and has not frozen out on the surface,” according to New Horizons deputy project scientist Leslie Young, Southwest Research Institute, Boulder.
