ARTICLE 19 has responded to the call for comment on the protection of journalists' sources and whistleblowers, made by David Kaye, UN special rapporteur on the right to freedom of expression. While both rights have received international recognition, there has been limited development of standards.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe has retained his premiership in this week's election, and ARTICLE 19 urges his new government to adopt the Draft Right to Information Bill, as promised in the previous parliamentary session.

Azerbaijan: Prisoners of the European Games
ARTICLE 19 has joined with the Sport for Rights Coalition to condemn the conviction and sentencing of human rights defenders Leyla and Arif Yunus. Charges were politically motivated. The convictions take place in the broader context of a human rights crackdown in Azerbaijan in the aftermath of the European Games and the run-up to the Election.

The Organised Suppression of Kurdish Journalists in Iran
The restrictions imposed on the Kurdish media do not differ much in essence today from those faced by Meghdad Badarkhan, founder of Kurdistan’s first newspaper, more than a century ago. The issue of Kurdistan remains one of the most complicated problems in the Middle East, still seen principally as a security issue. As a result, media activists and journalists who strive to work despite all impediments eventually become victims of this environment, because their work and they themselves are considered a matter of security.
