Azerbaijan: Civic space in focus as country listed ‘inactive’ by OGP

Now an ‘inactive’ member of the Open Government Partnership, Azerbaijan will continue to receive assistance from the steering committee, but will be excluded from high-level events. Azerbaijan will have one year to implement reforms which create an enabling environment for civil society, before it will be able to participate as a full member again. Read more >

ECHR: Serious harm threshold must be respected

ARTICLE 19 has filed a third-party intervention in Tamiz v the United Kingdom. The applicant in this case complains that the UK is in breach of  Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights, to protect his right to reputation, since defamatory allegations had been published for a period of three and a half months on a website hosted by Google. Read more >

Syria: Help free human rights defender Razan Zaitouneh on her birthday

On 29 April, human rights groups worldwide marked the birthday of Syrian human rights defender Razan Zaitouneh, who spent the day in detention for the third time, along with her three colleagues, husband Wael Hamada, Samira Khalil and Nazem Hamadi.

On the eve of the five-year anniversary of his detention, we condemn the ongoing and arbitrary deprivation of liberty of human rights defender Somyot Phrueksakasemsuk, and call on Thailand’s authorities to immediately and unconditionally release him.
