Parliament Approves New Georgian Cabinet
Georgia's parliament has confirmed a new government led by billionaire-turned-politician Bidzina Ivanishvili. More Women from Azerbaijan, Ethiopia, Pakistan, and Palestine -- including an RFE/RL journalist -- have been awarded “Courage in Journalism” prizes at a ceremony in New York. More Three weeks after its parliamentary election defeat , Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement is sending mixed signals. On the one hand, its legislators affirm their intention of acting as "constructive opposition" for the good of the country as a whole. On the other hand, they are clearly out to undermine and discredit the victorious Georgian Dream coalition. More Georgian leader Mikheil Saakashvili has pardoned the imprisoned son of the country's first president, Zviad Gamsakhurdia. More The woman expected to become Georgia's next foreign minister says the new government's position on Abkhazia and South Ossetia would "remain unchanged." More Over the past six days, some 1,000 copies of an appeal by the Islamic insurgency have been distributed and passed from hand to hand in Grozny, according to the independent Europe-based website Daymohk, which received a copy via e-mail. More Georgia's missing acting Defense Minister Dmitry Shashkin has announced that he decided to leave the country. More Russian media have quoted investigators there saying an aide to a State Duma deputy has signed a statement alleging that a Georgian official financed an opposition demonstration in Moscow in May that ended in scuffles with police. More The leadership of the pro-Kremlin United Russia party (ER) convened on October 18 to assess the results of the elections four days earlier to the legislatures of six federation subjects, including the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania. North Ossetia was the only region where ER garnered a substantially lower share of the vote than during the December 2011 elections to the Russian State Duma. More Georgia's new parliament has been holding its first session in the city of Kutaisi. More The only Russian-language TV channel in Georgia says it has been forced to suspend broadcasts due to a quarrel with its funder, the country's public broadcasting system. More Azerbaijani police have prevented opposition and independent youth groups from staging a protest rally in Baku, arresting dozens of people. More |
