The unarmed Mike Brown was shot dead by officer Darren Wilson after an altercation over Brown and a friend, Dorian Johnson, walking in the middle of Canfield Drive, Ferguson, Missouri.

Canfield Drive is not exactly a major thoroughfare, with locals reporting that walking in the street was commonplace among youths of the area. In addition, it was Saturday morning and there was little if any traffic on the road.

According to Ferguson police chief, Wilson did not know that Brown had recently stolen some cigars from a local store.

Without stopping his vehicle, Wilson approached the two young men in his Police SUV and said something to them about walking in the middle of the road.

According to Wilson's testimony he said: "Hey guys, why don't you walk on the sidewalk?" To which one of the two responded: "We're almost at our destination." So Wilson claims he tried again: "But what's wrong with the sidewalk?"

If the conversation had continued in this way, we might expect to hear that Wilson then said something like: "Aw shucks guys, I'd really really appreciate it if you would do me the honor of walking on the sidewalk, after all, I'm just trying to look out for you because I really love you both so much".

Five NFL players of the St. Louis Rams made the "hands up, don't shoot" gesture before a Sunday game against the Oakland Raiders in a show of support for nearby Ferguson and other cities across the US, where people have been protesting against the grand jury's decision not to indict Darren Wilson in the death of Michael Brown.

The Rams players have been both praised and severely criticized for the gesture, which also sparked intense debate on social media.

Tavon Austin, Stedman Bailey, Kenny Britt, Jared Cook and Chris Givens were the ones who raised their hands during pregame introductions. Protesters frustrated over police brutality and unfair sentencing, disproportionately affecting ethnic and racial minorities in the US, have used the gesture since Wilson, a white police officer, killed Michael Brown in August. According to some claims, the African-American teenager raised his hands in a sign of surrender before he was fatally shot. Others say Brown charged at the officer instead.

Thousands of people across the United States walked out of work and classrooms for a nationwide day of action dubbed 'Hands Up, Walk Out!' The protest comes after a grand jury declined to indict an officer for killing a black teenager.

The organizers - driven primarily by young people - spread the word online via the hashtag #HandsUpWalkOut, asking people to walk out in solidarity with those affected by police violence in Ferguson, Missouri, and around the country.

The walkouts occurred simultaneously at 12 p.m. CST and referenced the 'Hands Up! Don't Shoot!' chant that has been used as a rallying cry all over the US ever since African American teenager Michael Brown, 18, was fatally shot by Officer Darren Wilson on August 9.

It's been called contraceptive corn and spermicidal corn. A San Diego company called Epicyte developed it.

Here's a brief backgrounder from The Guardian, Sept. 9, 2001; "GM corn set to stop man spreading his seed," by Robin McKie:
"Scientists have created the ultimate GM crop: contraceptive corn. Waiving fields of maize may one day save the world from overpopulation.

"The pregnancy prevention plants are the handiwork of the San Diego biotechnology company Epicyte, where researchers have discovered a rare class of human antibodies that attack sperm.

"By isolating the genes that regulate the manufacture of these antibodies, and by putting them in corn plants, the company has created tiny horticultural factories that make contraceptives.

"'We have a hothouse filled with corn plants that make anti-sperm antibodies,' said Epicyte president Mitch Hein.

"...The company, which says it will not grow the maize near other crops, says it plans to launch clinical trials of the corn in a few months."
Comment: To label or not to label is a false dichotomy that is giving companies like Dow and Monsanto permission to continue to fiddle with mother nature just as long as they tell us about it. GMOs should never be added to the food supply under any circumstances due to their deleterious effects on both humans and the environment. Moreover, corporations that specialize in GMOs should be banned.

Of course, this may all be wishful thinking. The power to reign in corporations -- if it ever existed in the first place -- is over. The U.S. and the rest of the world is barreling headlong into complete Fascism. In fact, some would argue that we're already there.

At a Bundestag meeting, Deputy Head of the Left Party's faction Sahra Wagenknecht sharply criticized Chancellor Angela Merkel's policy toward Russia The MP accused the Chancellor of following instructions from Washington and neglecting national interests.
"Ms. Merkel, there is something that you consider to be more important than the interests of German business: that is the interests of the American government and American business," the MP said.
According to Sahra Wagenknecht, Angela Merkel is responsible for drawing the country into a new edition of "cold war" with Russia. Moreover, she is outraged at Merkel's cooperation with the Ukrainian regime, in which the police and security service functions are performed by people who are reliably attested as Nazis.
"Instead of dealing with these thugs, we need a foreign policy, for which the security and peace in Europe can be more important than Washington's instructions. Get back on the path of diplomacy, and cancel the sanctions. Stop playing with fire!" she said.
According to Wagenknecht, Angela Merkel has forsaken the policy of détente and led Europe into a new cold war, because, according to the MP, the Chancellor does not have enough courage to confront the US government.

Western attacks on Russian media vary from the abusive to the merely sarcastic, but what all of them have in common is the attempt to define the English language Russian media as a "propaganda instrument" of the Russian government.

The Ukrainian crisis has triggered an extraordinary series of attacks on the English language Russian media by the Western media. Here in Britain, where I write, hardly a day has passed in the past few weeks without the Russian media coming in for some sort of attack.

These attacks vary from the abusive to the merely sarcastic, but what all of them have in common is the attempt to define the English language Russian media as a "propaganda instrument" of the Russian government (always portentously called "the Kremlin").

The primary target is the Russian media's coverage of the Ukrainian crisis. US Secretary of State John Kerry has even called RT a "propaganda bullhorn" because of it.

There are many ways to define "propaganda", but most people would agree that it involves disseminating information in a way that is misleading and biased so as to influence opinion in a particular way. Doing so can involve an element of outright lying, but in my experience the most common and effective way is to omit or minimise important facts so as to make a correct understanding of an issue or situation impossible.

Russia is unable to continue the South Stream gas pipeline project implementation in current conditions, Russian President Vladimir Putin said Monday.

"Taking into account the European Commission's position, which is not contributing to the realization of this project, taking into account the fact that we have only recently received permission from the respective organizations in the Netherlands... Taking into account the fact that we still have not received Bulgaria's permission, we think that Russia is unable to continue realization of this project in such conditions," Putin said at a press conference following talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"We cannot start the construction in the sea until we have Bulgaria's permission to begin construction in the sea. It would be absurd to reach the Bulgarian coast and to stop then," Russian leader added.

Due to the European Commission's non-constructive approach, Russia will redirect gas deliveries to other regions, Putin said.

Comment: Turkey has been one of the main facilitators of ISIS, doing the U.S.'s bidding by providing support for the terrorist proxy army. Will that change with this latest development? Is the U.S. losing the support of its 'allies' (i.e., vassal states), or does Erdogan really think he can play both sides against the other?

Two reports out today from the US and UK heightening the terror threat from ISIS.

First from the UK as reported by Express:
Terrorists are plotting to blow up five European passenger jets in a Christmas "spectacular", security experts say.

The threat has been taken so seriously it came close to leading to an outright ban on all hand luggage, a senior insider has revealed.

Mobile phones and electronic devices could still be banned from plane cabins, with the threat of a 9/11-style coordinated attack on London and other major cities feared imminent.

The warning comes as Whitehall officials admit that a terror strike on the UK is now "almost inevitable" particularly with British jihadis returning from fighting alongside the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria.

An airport security source told the Sunday Express: "We've been told that five planes are being targeted in a high profile hit before Christmas. They've been waiting for the big one.

"We have many scares but this one nearly got hand baggage pulled from all airlines. The threat is still alive and real."

The plot, which has been known about for the past two months, is thought to involve Islamists smuggling bombs on to planes bound for major European destinations before Christmas.

The well-placed security insider said talks had been held about how to deal with it, with suggestions made to ban hand luggage.

The source said: "High level negotiations are continuing at Governmental level but at the moment there has been little done to respond.

"There is paralysis because of the difficulty of banning hand luggage which is one of the strongest weapons we have against the new threats.

"All electronics may be banned from hand luggage and placed in the hold, that has been considered, and there has been behaviour analysis training at airports but while it's effective, it's difficult to roll out quickly and is not a sufficient safety net.

"The threat is aimed at Europe. The U.S has improved their security over the summer but we have not.

"Everyone is expecting something catastrophic very soon."
The Orwellian response to this alleged threat is to further clamp down on airport security to the extent of making travel extremely difficult for ordinary people.

Russia is forced to withdraw from the South Stream project due to the EU's unwillingness to support the pipeline, and gas flows will be redirected to other customers, Vladimir Putin said after talks with his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

"We believe that the stance of the European Commission was counterproductive. In fact, the European Commission not only provided no help in implementation of [the South Stream pipeline], but, as we see, obstacles were created to its implementation. Well, if Europe doesn't want it implemented, it won't be implemented," the Russian president said.

The South Stream project is at the stage when "the construction of the pipeline system in the Black Sea must begin," but Russia still hasn't received an approval for the project from Bulgaria, the Russian president said.

Investing hundreds of millions of dollars into the pipeline, which would have to stop when it reaches Bulgarian waters, is "just absurd, I hope everybody understands that," he said.
Comment: Shutting down the South Stream project is a stunning move by Putin. Russia working with other countries for mutual benefit can bring astounding results.

A woman who claims she saw a police officer shoot dead Michael Brown has released video of his lifeless body in the street as the cop who killed him paces back and forth.

Piaget Crenshaw lives in an apartment with a balcony overlooking the street in Ferguson, Missouri where the 18-year-old was killed on August 9.

She said today that she waited until now to release the video as she feared for her safety and the officer's name had not been released.

On the cellphone footage, Ms Crenshaw can be heard saying: 'God bless his soul, police shot this boy outside my apartment.'

She told CNN today that she had recorded the incident because she believed that something was wrong.

'From it all initially happening, I knew this was not right,' Miss Crenshaw said.

'I knew the police shouldn't have been chasing this boy and firing at the same time. And the fact he got shot in his face, something clicked in me and I thought someone else should see this so I recorded.'
Comment: Obama is lying as always. The militarization of American cops is an ongoing project of the government, and the Ferguson shooting is just another example of a trigger-happy cop at work, as trained. Obama and his government want total control of the population via the militarized police. Consider what this Iraq vet had to say:

After months of operations at the Donetsk airport, Lieutenant Colonel "Givi" (call-sign) of the Novorussian Armed Forces and his battalion "Somali" are apparently on a break, resting from the constant fighting taking place there. The airport itself is an interesting topic. Once a modern international hub (rebuilt in 2012 for around USD $875 million), it is now a steaming pile of rubble.

091486_292d7f5e_57f7_11e4_8677.jpg

Why the stubborn focus on the airport from Kiev, where Ukrainian forces forces have been holed up for months, surrounded on all sides by the NAF? That's a whole other topic from the updates I want to give today, so I'll just mention a couple of points. Rumor has it that, holed up with the Ukrainians (including Right Sector thugs), there were or are also foreign mercenaries, including Poles. As Poland is a NATO member, this would be bad press if it came to light, to say the least, which may explain why they have consistently refused offers to surrender and have safe passage back to Ukraine.

'Hands up, don't shoot.'

Those were the first words out of Democratic Rep. Hakeem Jeffries mouth last night as he and other members of the Congressional Black Caucus took over the House floor for an hour to discuss the August shooting of 18-year-old Ferguson, Missouri, resident Michael Brown.

"It's a rallying cry of people all across America who are fed up with police violence," the New York representative said as he kicked off the speeches.

"In community, after community, after community, fed up with police violence in Ferguson, in Brooklyn, in Cleveland, in Oakland, in cities and counties and rural communities all across America."

Rep. Jeffries led the charge on behalf of the African-American lawmakers, explaining that they wanted to set aside time to consider what recent events in Ferguson "say about where we are and where we need to go."

"People are fed up all across America because of the injustice involved, continuing to see young, unarmed African-American men killed as a result of a gunshot fired by a law enforcement officer," he said in his opening remarks.

"People in America are fed up with a broken criminal justice system that continues to fail to deliver accountability when law enforcement officers engage in the excessive use of police force.

A massive power outage in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday morning is leaving much of the Motor City in the dark.

Spokespeople for the city and DTE Energy confirmed at around 11:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday that most of Detroit's municipal grid is offline, preventing power from being delivered to police stations, schools, traffic lights and other city-run facilities and services.

Municipal buildings were being evacuated, WXYZ Radio anchor Alicia Smith tweeted early Tuesday, although eyewitnesses on the ground told her shortly after 11 a.m. that people were reportedly becoming stuck in elevators.

According to Smith, a spokesperson for the city of Detroit confirmed that most of the municipal power grid was down. Residential structures are apparently unaffected, and some of the emergency facilities - like fire stations - have back-up generators, a local Fox News affiliate reported.
Comment: Somewhat symbolic that the municipal electrical grid has shut down, considering that the City has been conducting economic shock therapy on its residents by cutting off their water.

A Houston woman was shot in the head by an off-duty police officer after she honked at him for cutting her off, KHOU 11 reports. The victim - who did not wish to be identified for fear of retaliation - said that she was driving on the 610 Loop when Kenneth Caplan cut her off.

"He was about to hit me," she said, "so I switched to the other lane, got in front of him and cut him off. I guess that pissed him off," because he pulled alongside her, rolled down his window and opened fire.

"He was aiming at me and I thought he was going to cuss me out. I just started crying because I knew I was going to die," the victim said. "I wanted to call my mom to tell her 'I love you.'"
Comment: Of course his precinct condemned his actions; he was off duty! Had Caplan been on active patrol, you can bet they would've concocted some story and stood behind him until his name was cleared and the charges dropped.

A Cambridge doctor who admitted to serial sexual abuse of dozens of young cancer patients has been sentenced to 22 years in prison.

Myles Bradbury, who worked at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, admitted to 25 offences including sexual assault, voyeurism and possession of over 16,000 images of children.

The 41-year-old blood cancer specialist further admitted to the abuse of 18 young patients in his care between 2009 and 2013.

Bradbury was arrested in 2013 after Canadian Authorities informed the UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) that Bradbury had bought a DVD containing indecent images of children.

The judge told Bradbury that his behaviour was a "gross and grotesque breach of trust," saying he had never before seen such a flagrant abuse of the trust placed in a medical figure.

Some of the doctor's victims suffered from rare and life-threatening diseases such as leukaemia and haemophilia.

Judge Gareth Hawkesworth said "in many years on the bench, I've never come across a more culpable or grave course of sexual criminality which has involved such a gross and grotesque breach and betrayal of your Hippocratic Oath and trust reposed in you by your patients."

When people ask me what it was like growing up behind the Iron Curtain in Hungary in the Seventies and Eighties, most expect to hear tales of secret police, bread queues and other nasty manifestations of life in a one-party state.

They are invariably disappointed when I explain that the reality was quite different, and communist Hungary, far from being hell on earth, was in fact, rather a fun place to live.

The communists provided everyone with guaranteed employment, good education and free healthcare. Violent crime was virtually non-existent.

But perhaps the best thing of all was the overriding sense of camaraderie, a spirit lacking in my adopted Britain and, indeed, whenever I go back to Hungary today. People trusted one another, and what we had we shared.

I was born into a working-class family in Esztergom, a town in the north of Hungary, in 1968. My mother, Julianna, came from the east of the country, the poorest part. Born in 1939, she had a harsh childhood.
Comment: Whew, living under later Communism sounded truly horrid. Thank goodness the US and British governments saw to it that it was destroyed.

Now we can all be free and happy... together... in the gutter... as atomized automatons... with the NSA watching over us all... as the endless War on Terror... grinds on into infinity.

German archaeologists have discovered the largest stone ever carved by human hands, possibly dating to more than 2,000 years ago.

Still partially buried, the monolith measures 19.6 meters (64 feet) in length, 6 meters (19.6 feet) wide, and is at least 5.5 meters (18 feet) high. Its weight is estimated at a bulky 1,650 tons, making it biggest stone block from antiquity.

It was found by a team from the German Archaeological Institute in a stone quarry at Baalbek in Lebanon. Known as Heliopolis, "the city of the sun," during the Roman rule, Baalbek housed one of the grandest sanctuaries in the empire.

Kathryn Monroe is still trying to come to grips with what happened to her great grandson on Sunday. "I know we're all heartbroken. We're in tears." Said Monroe. "He's fighting for his life. That's all I can say. His one ear was severed, it's horrible."

Pasco County Sheriff's Deputies say 4-year old Jasper Debow Bridgeman was bitten by the family's Rottweiler at his grandmother's home at 9136 Suffolk Lane in New Port Richey shortly after 4pm on Sunday. Paramedics airlifted the boy to St. Joseph's hospital where he is recovering from his injuries. Pasco Animal Control took the dog to the shelter in Land O' Lakes.

The dog is currently under a 10-day rabies quarantine. Once the quarantine is completed, the dog's owners will then have an opportunity to determine if they want to keep the dog.

A Denison woman attacked and severely injured by a pack of dogs last week is speaking out just a day after being released from the hospital.

Lois Woodall, 34, says she is still in a lot of pain, but she is in good spirits. The bruises on her arms, gashes on her head and scars on her legs will permanently remind Woodall what happened to her the night of November 25th.

She went out to get medicine for her sick daughter and was walking home along the railroad tracks at East Sears and North Travis Avenue when a pack of dogs knocked her to the ground, tearing into her clothes and skin.

"They were pulling my legs, pulling me down and that's when they really start tearing me up, my legs and everything else," Woodall said. "Every time I tried to get up they just got me. One of them just chewed my head up, just pulling my hair, pulling my head real hard."

When you think of a volcano, you typically think "hot" - molten lava and ash, not ice. But the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has posted a video of a different kind of "volcano," this one made of ice, along the shore of Green Bay.

As the DNR explains, the "ice volcano" is formed when waves hit a shell of ice. At a weak spot in the ice, a hole forms, and water gushes through. The water splashes up and creates a mound with a hole in the middle, just like a volcano. The DNR says the volcano has disappeared naturally since the video was shot.

A rare and striking bird is showing up in large numbers in Southern California.

It's called the varied thrush (Ixoreus naevius) and it has deep yellow and black stripes with patches of white on its underside.

Normally, this species lives in the Pacific Northwest and travels no further south than San Francisco

For some reason, this year is different.

"It's turning up in all these parks and just flying overhead and people are seeing it in all these weird places,"
said Dan Cooper, an L.A. based biologist and birder watcher.

In addition to it's eye catching color, the varied thrush also has a distinct bird call that sounds almost like a tea kettle whistling.

About 40,000 homes on the outskirts of Budapest went without electricity on Tuesday as freezing rain blanketed the area and falling trees cut power lines, Hungary's Disaster Relief Agency said.

Heavy branches fell and entire trees toppled as ice as thick as 10 centimeters (4 inches) coated them, threatening entire forests in altitudes above 400 meters, according to people who ventured to higher-lying areas.

Forestry services closed off large tracts of land located higher than 400 meters above sea level to prevent injuries. No deaths or injuries have been reported.

One forestry worker who visited the Borzsony Mountains north of Budapest said the woods echoed with loud cracks and hissing sounds as branches and trunks gave way under tons of ice.

Just three weeks after a pair of rare earthquakes rattled windows and bookshelves, two more seismic events were reported in the Flathead Valley and scientists say this could be an indication that a seismic "swarm" has begun in the area.

On Dec. 1 at 5:40 a.m., a 3.0 magnitude earthquake shook the McGregor Lake area, almost the exact same area impacted by the 4.0 quake on Nov. 11. The epicenter of the earthquake was 3.6 miles beneath the surface. Less than three hours later at 8:13 a.m., a 3.5 magnitude earthquake 5.3 miles below the surface shook the same exact area.

Mike Stickney, director of the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology's Earthquake Studies Office, said there were a number of reports from local residents who said they felt the second quake.

Earthquakes are rare but not unheard of in Northwest Montana and Stickney said the series of shakes could indicate that a seismic "swarm" is beginning.

According to the latest report of the Manizales observatory, the volcano's activity recently changed and is showing increased signs of unrest, which could announce a new eruption to come.

A recent aerial survey by the Colombian air force revealed a deposit of fresh ash on the southern flank, indicating that at least sporadic explosions or ash emissions - presumably phreatic in nature - do indeed occur.

In addition, since about 2 weeks ago, seismic activity has been significantly higher than previously. Phases of tremor and more frequent shallow volcano-tectonic earthquakes suggest increased movements of fluids (magma, gas, water) inside the volcano. Most of the events are concentrated in an area southeast under Arenas crater.

"I just don't know what the implications of new technology [are] going to be" on kids' eyesight, says Wildsoet, who studies myopia, or nearsightedness, a condition experts say is beginning earlier in life, worsening later in life and rising to epidemic levels worldwide.

"There's a major lifestyle shift that's been brewing over the last 30 years," including kids and adults doing more close-up work and spending more time indoors, says Mark Jacquot, clinical director of vision care at LensCrafters. "This is contributing to a reduced ability to focus on things farther away, which is essentially myopia."

In the early 1970s, about 25 percent of 12- to 54-year-old Americans were myopic. By the 2000s, more than 41 percent had the condition, research finds. Wildsoet and her team have trouble finding non-myopic controls for their studies, and clinicians like Maria Liu, head of Berkeley's Myopia Control Clinic, see children as young as 4 with severe myopia.

fast.jpg

Contrary to popular belief, intermittent fasting is not an extreme or dangerous form of "dieting." It's actually a very healthy practice that's loaded with a number health benefits. What kind of health benefits? Everything from reducing risks that are associated with obesity, reversing diabetes, to possibly assisting in killing cancer and more.

What Is Intermittent Fasting?

Intermittent fasting is about timing your meals to allow for regular periods of fasting. Recommendations for allocating time throughout your day to go without food range from approximately 12 to 16 hours. This would mean, for example, only eating between the hours of 11 am and 7 pm, and doing so everyday. There are other ways to do it and we will get to that later in the article.

Kirkus Reviews praises "Our Daily Poison, From Pesticides to Packaging, How Chemicals Have Contaminted the Food Chain and Are Making Us Sick": "For readers with a strong interest in environmental and public health and food safety policy, this may be one of the most important books of the year."

In specific, Kirkus lauds Robin for ferreting out the origins of the modern chemical industry:
A few of the topics discussed include the origins of the chemical industry in chemical warfare; its history of "strategizing how to control and manipulate research on the toxicity of its products, while waging a merciless war on all the scientists wishing to maintain their independence in the name of the defense of public health"; the modern epidemic of cancers and other diseases that exploded at the end of the 19th century; the weaknesses of epidemiological studies; the idea of acceptable daily intake; case studies of specific chemicals; and the "cocktail effect."

There are several painful stories of poisoning victims' struggles for recognition and compensation, which serve to break up and humanize the flood of technical information. In her conclusion, Robin calls for a new precautionary approach to approving chemicals that errs on the side of protecting people rather than industry.
Comment: The excerpt above describes quite a disturbing picture of the toxic pesticide 'cocktail effect' that humans have been exposed to since the early 1950's. While the information presented inOur Daily Poison may be news to some, the poisoning of our planet through toxic chemical pesticides continues today:

Mercury_Filling_Tooth.jpg

So you don't indulge in sugar. You never take antibiotics. You eat a pretty good diet. Why are you still battling Candida?

You may have to look no further than your mouth. If you have amalgam fillings - mercury fillings - the cause of your Candidiasis might be staring back at you.

The problem with amalgam fillings

Mercury is one of the most toxic substances known to man, yet many of us have mercury fillings in our mouth that are poisoning us. Tiny particles break free and mercury vapor is released that we inhale or swallow. The mercury release is 50 times higher for those who have mercury fillings capped with gold.
Comment: In addition to having mercury fillings safely removed it is worth trying a low carb orketogenic diet to rid yourself of candida.

Is the pendulum swinging back? In what seems contrary to mainstream dietary advice, a small new study shows that doubling the saturated fat in a person's diet does not drive up the levels of saturated fat in the blood.

Rather, the study found that it was the carbohydrates in people's diets that were linked with increased levels of a type of fatty acid linked to heart disease and type-2 diabetes. The results of the study, which followed 16 middle-aged, obese adults for 21 weeks, were published Nov. 21 in the journal PLOS ONE.

Saturated fats, largely from meat and dairy products, have been vilified for decades as a primary culprit in promoting heart disease. And most health authorities maintain this stance.

However, in recent years, scientists have seen the ill effects of completely replacing saturated fat with carbohydrates, particularly the simple carbs that are found so commonly in processed foods. A large analysis published in 2009 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that swapping saturated fats with carbs had no benefit in reducing people's risk of heart disease. But replacing those so-called bad fats with polyunsaturated fats - found in fish, olives and nuts - did.

"The unintended consequence of telling everyone to restrict fat was that people ate an even greater amount of carbohydrates," said Jeff Volek, senior author on the new study and a professor of human sciences at The Ohio State University. "This is a fact. It's not a stretch to make the connection between overconsumption of carbs and the obesity and diabetes epidemic."

The new study "challenges the conventional wisdom that has demonized saturated fat," Volek said, because it shows that saturated fats don't need to be replaced at all, neither with carbs nor polyunsaturated fats.

tree_hugging1_620x400.jpg

I'm sure most people have heard of the term "tree-hugger," often a nickname given to people who care about the environment and the planet. But did you know that hugging trees can actually improve your health? As a matter of fact, you don't even have to hug a tree to reap the numerous health benefits, just being around trees and plants in nature is enough.

In a book that was published by author Matthew Silverstone entitled, "Blinded By Science" the evidence confirming the healthful benefits of trees includes the effects they have on various issues like depression, concentration levels and even the ability to alleviate headaches. This practice has been going on since ancient times so it's not just a new discovery.

father_and_son_walking.jpg

Sons whose fathers have criminal records tend to have lower cognitive abilities than sons whose fathers have no criminal history, data from over 1 million Swedish men show. The research, conducted by scientists in Sweden and Finland, indicates that the link is not directly caused by fathers' behavior but is instead explained by genetic factors that are shared by father and son.

The study is published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science.

"The findings are important because cognitive ability is among the most important psychological predictors of many important life outcomes, including socioeconomic success and health," says lead researcher Antti Latvala of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the University of Helsinki in Finland.

Research looking across generations in families has shown that children of parents who engage in "antisocial" behaviors -- such as rule-breaking, aggressive, or violent behavior -- are at greater risk for various negative outcomes, including criminality, psychiatric disorders, substance use, and low academic achievement. And research has also shown that individuals who engage in antisocial behaviors tend to have poorer cognitive abilities than those without antisocial tendencies.

echo-narcissus.jpg

It has been exactly one hundred years since Sigmund Freud penned his pivotal essay "On Narcissism." It's easy to wonder how the father of psychoanalysis might react to society today, especially the millennials who came of age around the year 2000 and have been dubbed the "Me Me Me Generation." The social media-focused culture of selfies, Twitter, and Facebook is often criticized for making Americans, younger ones in particular, more self-absorbed and entitled.

But are we, in fact, more narcissistic than we were a few decades ago? Are millennials more narcissistic than previous generations? Or are we too lightly employing that word, which describes a mental illness diagnosis?

"I don't think people are usually referring to a person with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD) when they toss around the term 'narcissism' today," says Aaron Pincus, Penn State professor of psychology.

"Narcissism has both normal and pathological forms of expression," he explains. "Most of the recent media coverage has focused on what I refer to as normal narcissism. It's normal for individuals to see themselves in a positive light and to seek out self-enhancement experiences such as successful achievements and competitive victories."

Bhangarh_Fort_India.jpg

The abandoned fort of Bhangarh is thought to be the most haunted place in India, so much so that the Archaeological Survey of India has forbidden access to the site between sunset and sunrise, and locals have moved their town outside the limits of the fort. The reputation of Bhangarh stems from two old legends, one of which involves a Holy Man who supposedly cursed Bhangarh after the fort cast a shadow over his abode.

The town of Bhangarh, which is located in the Rajgarh municipality in the state of Rajasthan, was first established in 1573 during the rule of Bhagwant Das as the residence of his second son. The fort, which is actually a small city composed of temples, palaces, and multiple gates, covers a large area of land at the foot of a mountain. But despite its beauty and the picturesque scenery, the fort is steeped in dark tales and became completely abandoned by 1783, with locals moving their village elsewhere.
Comment: Interesting how the legend has remained for hundreds of years, is it just a ruse to attract tourism or is there some high strangeness going on?

A woman boarded a flight in Connecticut with a 70-pound pig she claimed was for "emotional support." But after the porky pet got totally out of hand, the odd couple was forced to disembark.

The woman brought the animal onto a US Airways flight on Wednesday, apparently having had no trouble taking it through customs.

A professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Jonathan Skolnik, who was also a passenger on the flight, told ABC News of his shock after initially thinking the large animal was a duffel bag.

"But it turns out it wasn't a duffel bag. We could smell it and it was a pig on a leash," he said. "She tethered it to the arm rest next to me and started to deal with her stuff, but the pig was walking back and forth.
Comment: Pigs really can't fly. Service animals have their place, but a pig might be a little too much. In any case it would be better than a stiff drink.

This video is wildly popular on the Russian internet.

A Russian babushka (grandma), gives Obama advice, in rhyme!, in the best Ru

ssian tradition.

She calls him Obamashka, an affectionate rendering of his name in Russian.

She offers to pray for him, to cook him blinis (pancakes), to take him to church to meet her priest so that they can all pray for America together, and advises against cozying up to Nazis, explaining that this always ends up badly.

She explains that Crimea is Russian, and always fought on Russia's side.

Finally she urges him to make friends with Volodya (affectionate name for Vladimir), and wishes him well.

We are Russia experts, and we can assure you, there is no force on earth that can withstand the charm and goodness of the Russian babushka.
