The unarmed Mike Brown was shot dead by officer Darren Wilson after an altercation over Brown and a friend, Dorian Johnson, walking in the middle of Canfield Drive, Ferguson, Missouri. Canfield Drive is not exactly a major thoroughfare, with locals reporting that walking in the street was commonplace among youths of the area. In addition, it was Saturday morning and there was little if any traffic on the road. According to Ferguson police chief, Wilson did not know that Brown had recently stolen some cigars from a local store. Without stopping his vehicle, Wilson approached the two young men in his Police SUV and said something to them about walking in the middle of the road. According to Wilson's testimony he said: "Hey guys, why don't you walk on the sidewalk?" To which one of the two responded: "We're almost at our destination." So Wilson claims he tried again: "But what's wrong with the sidewalk?" If the conversation had continued in this way, we might expect to hear that Wilson then said something like: "Aw shucks guys, I'd really really appreciate it if you would do me the honor of walking on the sidewalk, after all, I'm just trying to look out for you because I really love you both so much". | |

She told CNN today that she had recorded the incident because she believed that something was wrong. 'From it all initially happening, I knew this was not right,' Miss Crenshaw said. 'I knew the police shouldn't have been chasing this boy and firing at the same time. The airport itself is an interesting topic. Once a modern international hub (rebuilt in 2012 for around USD $875 million), it is now a steaming pile of rubble.
Why the stubborn focus on the airport from Kiev, where Ukrainian forces forces have been holed up for months, surrounded on all sides by the NAF? That's a whole other topic from the updates I want to give today, so I'll just mention a couple of points. Rumor has it that, holed up with the Ukrainians (including Right Sector thugs), there were or are also foreign mercenaries, including Poles. As Poland is a NATO member, this would be bad press if it came to light, to say the least, which may explain why they have consistently refused offers to surrender and have safe passage back to Ukraine. | ||

A massive power outage in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday morning is leaving much of the Motor City in the dark. Spokespeople for the city and DTE Energy confirmed at around 11:00 a.m. local time on Tuesday that most of Detroit's municipal grid is offline, preventing power from being delivered to police stations, schools, traffic lights and other city-run facilities and services. Municipal buildings were being evacuated, WXYZ Radio anchor Alicia Smith tweeted early Tuesday, although eyewitnesses on the ground told her shortly after 11 a.m. that people were reportedly becoming stuck in elevators. According to Smith, a spokesperson for the city of Detroit confirmed that most of the municipal power grid was down. Residential structures are apparently unaffected, and some of the emergency facilities - like fire stations - have back-up generators, a local Fox News affiliate reported. | |

A Cambridge doctor who admitted to serial sexual abuse of dozens of young cancer patients has been sentenced to 22 years in prison. Myles Bradbury, who worked at Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, admitted to 25 offences including sexual assault, voyeurism and possession of over 16,000 images of children. The 41-year-old blood cancer specialist further admitted to the abuse of 18 young patients in his care between 2009 and 2013. Bradbury was arrested in 2013 after Canadian Authorities informed the UK's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre (CEOP) that Bradbury had bought a DVD containing indecent images of children. The judge told Bradbury that his behaviour was a "gross and grotesque breach of trust," saying he had never before seen such a flagrant abuse of the trust placed in a medical figure. Some of the doctor's victims suffered from rare and life-threatening diseases such as leukaemia and haemophilia. But perhaps the best thing of all was the overriding sense of camaraderie, a spirit lacking in my adopted Britain and, indeed, whenever I go back to Hungary today. People trusted one another, and what we had we shared. I was born into a working-class family in Esztergom, a town in the north of Hungary, in 1968. My mother, Julianna, came from the east of the country, the poorest part. Born in 1939, she had a harsh childhood. | |

German archaeologists have discovered the largest stone ever carved by human hands, possibly dating to more than 2,000 years ago. Still partially buried, the monolith measures 19.6 meters (64 feet) in length, 6 meters (19.6 feet) wide, and is at least 5.5 meters (18 feet) high. Its weight is estimated at a bulky 1,650 tons, making it biggest stone block from antiquity. It was found by a team from the German Archaeological Institute in a stone quarry at Baalbek in Lebanon. That's all I can say. His one ear was severed, it's horrible." Pasco County Sheriff's Deputies say 4-year old Jasper Debow Bridgeman was bitten by the family's Rottweiler at his grandmother's home at 9136 Suffolk Lane in New Port Richey shortly after 4pm on Sunday. Paramedics airlifted the boy to St. Joseph's hospital where he is recovering from his injuries. Pasco Animal Control took the dog to the shelter in Land O' Lakes. The dog is currently under a 10-day rabies quarantine. Once the quarantine is completed, the dog's owners will then have an opportunity to determine if they want to keep the dog.

A Denison woman attacked and severely injured by a pack of dogs last week is speaking out just a day after being released from the hospital. Lois Woodall, 34, says she is still in a lot of pain, but she is in good spirits. The bruises on her arms, gashes on her head and scars on her legs will permanently remind Woodall what happened to her the night of November 25th. She went out to get medicine for her sick daughter and was walking home along the railroad tracks at East Sears and North Travis Avenue when a pack of dogs knocked her to the ground, tearing into her clothes and skin. "They were pulling my legs, pulling me down and that's when they really start tearing me up, my legs and everything else," Woodall said. "Every time I tried to get up they just got me. One of them just chewed my head up, just pulling my hair, pulling my head real hard." | |

But the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has posted a video of a different kind of "volcano," this one made of ice, along the shore of Green Bay.2014-12-02 21:31:00 As the DNR explains, the "ice volcano" is formed when waves hit a shell of ice. At a weak spot in the ice, a hole forms, and water gushes through. The water splashes up and creates a mound with a hole in the middle, just like a volcano. The DNR says the volcano has disappeared naturally since the video was shot.

A rare and striking bird is showing up in large numbers in Southern California. It's called the varied thrush (Ixoreus naevius) and it has deep yellow and black stripes with patches of white on its underside. Normally, this species lives in the Pacific Northwest and travels no further south than San Francisco For some reason, this year is different. "It's turning up in all these parks and just flying overhead and people are seeing it in all these weird places," said Dan Cooper, an L.A. based biologist and birder watcher. In addition to it's eye catching color, the varied thrush also has a distinct bird call that sounds almost like a tea kettle whistling.

Two men jumped out of a car just in time in China. A CCTV camera captured the moment a sinkhole formed in the middle of an intersection. One driver apparently couldn't see the whole and partially drove into. Both he and his passenger got out, just as the car fell into the hole upside down. There were no injuries reported. According to CBS News, Chinese officials said sand under the road gave way, creating the hole.

Just three weeks after a pair of rare earthquakes rattled windows and bookshelves, two more seismic events were reported in the Flathead Valley and scientists say this could be an indication that a seismic "swarm" has begun in the area. On Dec. 1 at 5:40 a.m., a 3.0 magnitude earthquake shook the McGregor Lake area, almost the exact same area impacted by the 4.0 quake on Nov. 11. The epicenter of the earthquake was 3.6 miles beneath the surface. Less than three hours later at 8:13 a.m., a 3.5 magnitude earthquake 5.3 miles below the surface shook the same exact area. Mike Stickney, director of the Montana Bureau of Mines and Geology's Earthquake Studies Office, said there were a number of reports from local residents who said they felt the second quake. A recent aerial survey by the Colombian air force revealed a deposit of fresh ash on the southern flank, indicating that at least sporadic explosions or ash emissions - presumably phreatic in nature - do indeed occur. In addition, since about 2 weeks ago, seismic activity has been significantly higher than previously. "I just don't know what the implications of new technology [are] going to be" on kids' eyesight, says Wildsoet, who studies myopia, or nearsightedness, a condition experts say is beginning earlier in life, worsening later in life and rising to epidemic levels worldwide. "There's a major lifestyle shift that's been brewing over the last 30 years," including kids and adults doing more close-up work and spending more time indoors, says Mark Jacquot, clinical director of vision care at LensCrafters. "This is contributing to a reduced ability to focus on things farther away, which is essentially myopia." In the early 1970s, about 25 percent of 12- to 54-year-old Americans were myopic. By the 2000s, more than 41 percent had the condition, research finds. Is the pendulum swinging back? In what seems contrary to mainstream dietary advice, a small new study shows that doubling the saturated fat in a person's diet does not drive up the levels of saturated fat in the blood. Rather, the study found that it was the carbohydrates in people's diets that were linked with increased levels of a type of fatty acid linked to heart disease and type-2 diabetes. The results of the study, which followed 16 middle-aged, obese adults for 21 weeks, were published Nov. 21 in the journal PLOS ONE. Saturated fats, largely from meat and dairy products, have been vilified for decades as a primary culprit in promoting heart disease. And most health authorities maintain this stance. However, in recent years, scientists have seen the ill effects of completely replacing saturated fat with carbohydrates, particularly the simple carbs that are found so commonly in processed foods. A large analysis published in 2009 in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition found that swapping saturated fats with carbs had no benefit in reducing people's risk of heart disease. But replacing those so-called bad fats with polyunsaturated fats - found in fish, olives and nuts - did. "The unintended consequence of telling everyone to restrict fat was that people ate an even greater amount of carbohydrates," said Jeff Volek, senior author on the new study and a professor of human sciences at The Ohio State University. "This is a fact. It's not a stretch to make the connection between overconsumption of carbs and the obesity and diabetes epidemic." The new study "challenges the conventional wisdom that has demonized saturated fat," Volek said, because it shows that saturated fats don't need to be replaced at all, neither with carbs nor polyunsaturated fats. | |

Sons whose fathers have criminal records tend to have lower cognitive abilities than sons whose fathers have no criminal history, data from over 1 million Swedish men show. The research, conducted by scientists in Sweden and Finland, indicates that the link is not directly caused by fathers' behavior but is instead explained by genetic factors that are shared by father and son. The study is published in Psychological Science, a journal of the Association for Psychological Science. "The findings are important because cognitive ability is among the most important psychological predictors of many important life outcomes, including socioeconomic success and health," says lead researcher Antti Latvala of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the University of Helsinki in Finland. Research looking across generations in families has shown that children of parents who engage in "antisocial" behaviors -- such as rule-breaking, aggressive, or violent behavior -- are at greater risk for various negative outcomes, including criminality, psychiatric disorders, substance use, and low academic achievement. The abandoned fort of Bhangarh is thought to be the most haunted place in India, so much so that the Archaeological Survey of India has forbidden access to the site between sunset and sunrise, and locals have moved their town outside the limits of the fort. The reputation of Bhangarh stems from two old legends, one of which involves a Holy Man who supposedly cursed Bhangarh after the fort cast a shadow over his abode. The town of Bhangarh, which is located in the Rajgarh municipality in the state of Rajasthan, was first established in 1573 during the rule of Bhagwant Das as the residence of his second son. The fort, which is actually a small city composed of temples, palaces, and multiple gates, covers a large area of land at the foot of a mountain. But despite its beauty and the picturesque scenery, the fort is steeped in dark tales and became completely abandoned by 1783, with locals moving their village elsewhere. | |

A woman boarded a flight in Connecticut with a 70-pound pig she claimed was for "emotional support." But after the porky pet got totally out of hand, the odd couple was forced to disembark. The woman brought the animal onto a US Airways flight on Wednesday, apparently having had no trouble taking it through customs. A professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, Jonathan Skolnik, who was also a passenger on the flight, told ABC News of his shock after initially thinking the large animal was a duffel bag. "But it turns out it wasn't a duffel bag. We could smell it and it was a pig on a leash," he said. "She tethered it to the arm rest next to me and started to deal with her stuff, but the pig was walking back and forth. | |
