The creators of Bloodhound SSC (for “supersonic car”) aim to demolish the world land speed record by pushing the car to speeds in excess of 1,600 kilometers per hour (1,000 mph). To do this, the computer-designed, missile-shaped Bloodhound - which at top speed could traverse the 20-km track in less than a minute - will rely on a fighter jet engine and a pair of solid-fuel rockets for thrust. Massive motive power requires prodigious braking power, so the vehicle also features three sets of brakes. The car’s high-tech cockpit is what driver Andy Green refers to as his “office,” and for a few minutes, it’ll be the fastest-moving workplace on the face of the Earth.
