In 1942, as the Holocaust began to gain momentum, the European Jews who were still free refused to believe their lives were at risk. Even eyewitness reports could not persuade them.
Holocaust survivor Elie Wiesel remembers a man who had barely escaped death and returned to Wiesel’s small town of Sighet to warn the other Jews of the mortal danger that was nearly at their doorstep.
But they wouldn’t believe this man. Nobody could imagine such violent stories to be true. They said he was crazy. They stopped listening to him.
Unfortunately, the stories of executions, mass graves, and babies used for target practice were true.
By the time the Jews of Sighet discovered the truth, it was too late. They were detained in ghettos, then packed into cattle cars and transported to extermination camps.
Many of them paid the ultimate price for their unbelief; they paid with their lives.
