MERKEL BREATHES SIGH OF RELIEF
------------------------------------------------------------------------

German Parliament Passes Euro Fund Expansion
Chancellor Angela Merkel got the majority she needed on Thursday as
German parliament passed the expansion of the euro backstop fund, the
EFSF. With fewer conservative renegades than feared, Merkel can breathe
a sigh of relief. But with more difficult decisions approaching, the
respite may not last.

Jaroslaw Kaczynski Loses His Political Compass
Since the death of his twin brother in the Smolensk disaster, Jaroslaw
Kaczynski appears to have lost his political instinct. Poland is getting
tired of his paranoid rhetoric about the causes of the plane crash. His
Law and Justice party faces defeat in the upcoming parliamentary
election.

Monitoring Global Warming at World's 'Third Pole'
How are high-altitude glaciers in central Asia reacting to global
warming? A team of German-based scientists is measuring the little-known
frozen world of the Tian Shan mountain range. Though conditions there
are much colder than in other ranges, they've already found evidence of
gradual ice sheet shrinkage.

HOLY VLADIMIR, PRAY FOR US
------------------------------------------------------------------------

A Russian Sect Honors Putin as a Saint
Mother Fotina once led a "Center for Cosmo-Energetic Medicine," and now
she prays to Vladimir Putin. Her sect, in a village east of
Moscow, honors Russia's once and future president as a reincarnation of
St. Paul. The group represents a rising trend in Russia, but its origins
are surprisingly mundane.

Planned Housing Units Put Israel on Defensive
Israel's allies did not react positively to the news that 1,100 new
housing units will be going up in East Jerusalem. Now, Prime Minister
Netanyahu is trying to play down the importance of the development. But
the incident shows that Israel and its international partners are not on
the same page.

'Stern Words Change Nothing' in the Middle East
Before the US vetoes the Palestinians' bid for national recognition at
the US Security Council, it wants Israelis and Palestinians to talk. But
both sides have dug in their heels. The Israelis announced a new round
of settlement building on Tuesday, a surprise move the US has condemned.
German commentators want to see more than warnings from Washington.

BUON GIORNO, OKTOBERFEST
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Italians Trek North for German Beer
Every year, hundreds of thousands of Italians head north for Munich's
Oktoberfest. Local entrepreneurs have identified a market niche, while
Munich police have introduced special measures to deal with the massive
influx -- such as importing Italian police officers to keep their
compatriots in order.

Canary Island Evacuated Amid Volcano Fears
Worries of a potential volcanic eruption have prompted Spanish
authorities to evacuate residents and tourists on one of the Canary
Islands. Thousands of tiny tremors have recently intensified, with the
biggest one reaching a magnitude of 3.4, they said. The seismic activity
indicates magma on the move.
