The Right to Share: Principles on Freedom of Expression and Copyright in the Digital Age

These Principles seek to establish a framework which can be used to ensure firstly, that the right to freedom of expression and the ability to share knowledge and culture are fully protected in the digital age; and secondly, that copyright interests do not unduly restrict them. The Principles also seek to promote positive measures which foster both the free flow of information and ideas and greater access to knowledge and culture on the Internet and beyond.  Read more >

STATEMENT

The Gambia: ARTICLE 19 condemns new attacks on freedom of expression

ARTICLE 19 condemns new attacks on freedom of expression by the Gambian authorities in a climate where freedom of speech is already severely limited. Last week, the Government introduced amendments to the Criminal Code that allow courts to impose harsh punishments to anyone found guilty of: “giving false information to public servants”; disturbing “the peace by quarrelling or attempting to quarrel or by using any insolent, scurrilous or abusive term of reproach.” A few days later, the Public Utilities Regulatory Authority (PURA) prohibited companies and individuals operating Internet cafes from offering dating services and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) services. . Read more >

Venezuela: Critical situation for free speech post-election

ARTICLE 19 urges the newly elected Venezuelan government to end its crackdown on protests undertaken by opposition groups following the 14 April presidential elections in which former Vice President, Nicolás Maduro was declared winner by a narrow margin. Government actions have seriously threatened freedom of expression in Venezuela, including: Three journalists jailed whilst covering the protests; At least150 protesters imprisoned; Political opposition rallies banned in Caracas; Opposition MPs not allowed to speak in the National Assembly. Read more >

UK: Browsing the Internet is a legitimate exception to copyright

ARTICLE 19 welcomes the UK Supreme Court’s judgment on temporary copies on the Internet in the ‘Meltwater case’, issued on 17 April 2013. In what could become a landmark decision for freedom of expression on the Internet, the Supreme Court found that unauthorised browsing of copyrighted material was legitimate. Continuous Torture of the Beheshti Family and Other Stories

After nearly 6 months since the death of Sattar Beheshti and due to his family’s continuous requests, his case was reviewed in the Islamic Consultative Assembly (parliament if you are confused) last Tuesday. A member of majlis, Ali Motahari questioned the Interior Minister Mostafa Mohammad Najjar, whose accounts he did not find satisfactory.
