Why Ukraine Will Never Take Back Crimea
The Saker 23 September 2014
The Saker <http://russia-insider.com/
This article was also published on The Saker's Blog <http://vineyardsaker.
The Ukrainian Defense Minister Valerii Geletei is hardly a credible figure.
Not only did he recently declare that Russia had threatened the Ukraine with nuclear strikes <http://www.charter97.org/en/
Despite these antics, Geletei nonetheless caught the world's attention when he promised the Ukrainian Rada that the Ukraine would retake Crimea and organize a victory parade in Sevastopol <http://www.bbc.com/news/
The truth is that this will never happen. Here is why:
By 2020 Russia will have completed the following defense plan <http://top.rbc.ru/politics/
* 86.7 billion rubles will be spend to modernize the Black Sea Fleet. Modernization plans include the deployment of ultra-modern Project 11356 frigates <http://www.naval-technology.
* A separate army group, similar to the one in Kaliningrad, will be formed and a bomber base will be created. The ground forces component will include <http://www.vedomosti.ru/
* The Russian Air Force plans to deploy Tupolev Tu-22M3 “Backfire” bombers in Crimea which will be able to not only defend Crimea from any threat from the sea, but also destroy key components of the the US/NATO anti-ballistic missile system now deployed in southern Europe.
* Finally, Crimea will be defended by coastal defense missiles, air defense systems and anti-ship cruise missiles.
The Russian Navy Udaloy-class destroyer
In other words, Crimea will become a formidable defensive node, an unsinkable aircraft carrier if you want, and an ideal location for the power-projection of Russian military forces in southern Europe, the Balkans, the Mediterranean, the Middle-East, the Caucasus and Central Asia.
No wonder the US/NATO wanted it so badly.
Speaking of the US and NATO – much is made of the presence of USN ships in the Black Sea. In reality, the USN poses no threat to Russia at all, at least not from the Black Sea. The Black Sea is an enclose and small sea, at least by USN standards, where any USN ship, underwater or on the surface, would be a sitting duck for Russian forces, especially missile attacks.
The USN knows that and what these USN vessels do in the Black Sea is called “showing the flag”. This has nothing to do with threatening Russia or Crimea. If the US really wanted to threaten Russia, the very last thing the USN would do is enter the Black Sea. The USN is a deep sea, “blue water <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/
Finally, history has shown that Crimea is ideal to defend and very hard to take. By land, Crimea is only accessible by a few open and undefended roads from the north. Centuries of warfare have turned it into a Swiss-cheese like structure filled with tunnels, underground bunkers and fortifications.
Last but not least, Crimea has now already been fully integrated into the Russian military's Southern Military District (based in Rostov-on-the-Don) and, as such, it would have the full support of the rest of the Russian Armed Forces.

Lt. Col. Harman takes command of Aviation Detachment in Poland
By Airman 1st Class Kyle Gese
52nd Fighter Wing Public Affairs
Lask Air Base, Poland: U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. Jack Harman took command of Aviation Detachment 1, 52nd Operations Group at Lask Air Base, Poland, from U.S. Air Force Maj. Matthew Spears Sept. 18, 2014 after serving two years as the commander.
“You’ve dedicated a year of your lives to improve the mission to increase NATO interoperability, support regional security and build a lasting impression on such a key area of the world,” Harman said. “I look forward to working with you and our professional colleagues to continue building partner capacity.”
The U.S. Air Force Aviation Detachment in Poland, or Av-Det, is a nine-person team that facilitates the U.S. Air Force service members and aircraft in Poland. They continually train with Polish air forces to strengthen bilateral ties and increase interoperability.
Recent involvement in Exercises Eagle Talon and BALTOPS 14 in June 2014 was among many training opportunities aimed at fostering NATO partnerships and bolstering readiness for U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces in Africa’s “Forward. Ready. Now!” priority. The detachment completes four annual rotations primarily of F-16 Fighting Falcon, but also includes C-130 Hercules cargo aircraft.
Harman shared his gratitude to his predecessor for creating the foundation as the first commander of the detachment upon assuming command. As for the next year, he will continue to establish a constant presence in Europe and execute the mission to foster bilateral defense ties, enhance regional security, and increase interoperability among NATO allies.

Shock and Awe in Syria: A Replay of War on Terror
http://english.farsnews.com/ newstext.aspx?nn= 13930701001795
http://www.911forum.org.uk/ board/viewtopic.php?p=168228# 168228
TEHRAN (FNA)- Canadian humanist, Rodrigue
Tremblay, once said: The world should be worried
about those who go around the planet with a can
of gasoline in one hand and a box of matches in
the other, pretending to sell fire insurance.
These days the world has indeed every reason to
be worried: Because the Empire of Chaos and its
coalition of terrorism financiers (Bahrain, Saudi
Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and
Jordan) are doing just that: They have begun
selling fictitious “security covers” to the
people of the Middle East by bombing their own
colonies of terror and violence in Syria!
The fathers of ISIL, all of whom deny patrimony,
are bombing their fundamentalist crazies in Syria
after their foreign policy weapon against the
“Axis of Resistance” (Iran, Syria and Lebanon)
backfired. They vainly spent three years
providing American weapons and petro-dollar cash
to the “good terrorists,” including the medieval
butchers of ISIL, in futile hopes that they would
“degrade and ultimately destroy” the Syrian state.
For better or worse, America’s coalition set out
to destroy one state in Syria, yet ironically
ended up creating a “caliphate” across the
borders of Syria and Iraq; a medieval
Frankenstein that is now completely out of
control and fanatically hell-bent on destroying
its own masters and the world as we know it.
US military officials say the ongoing air strikes
(without UN Security Council mandate or Syrian
permission) are meant to target the ability of
ISIL to command and control, resupply and train.
If only Emperor Obama could have listened to
someone that he has no clothes: His bogus
coalition could have done just that; not by
fighter warplanes, drones and Tomahawk cruise
missiles, but by closing the jihadist highways
and banks, terrorist training camps, and arms
supply routes/depots in “friendly neighbors” like
Turkey and Jordan. If they are worried about
stopping terrorism, they must first stop participating in it!
For now, it is apparent that the coalition of the
killing is smashing the boogeyman of America’s
own making ISIL. It is painfully evident that
every member of this coalition also happens to be
a co-conspirator with American CIA and Israeli
MOSAAD in giving birth to the runaway monster – just like al-Qaeda.
However, it doesn’t take a strategic mastermind
to grasp that Obama’s war on ISIL in Syria looks
more like Bush’s war on Afghanistan launched in
2001, supposedly to destroy al-Qaeda and the
Taliban. The result spread al-Qaeda across the
region and turned the Taliban into a guerrilla army of resistance.
Thirteen years later, the Taliban controls large
parts of Afghanistan and most NATO troops are on
their way out. Al-Qaeda has been eclipsed by the
even more extreme ISIL, which mushroomed out of
the Western-sponsored destruction of the Iraqi
and Syrian states. Something similar is also
happening in the chaos left three years ago by
NATO’s “humanitarian intervention” in Libya.
And now we are witnessing a replay of the
neocons’ “War on Terror,” more than a decade
after it was demonstrated to only fuel terrorism
rather than fight it. However, the new “War on
Terror” in the Syrian theater cannot and will not
destroy ISIL, because air strikes can only do so
much. History tells us that it will portend
further disaster for the people of Syria and
Iraq, the region, and much of the world.
All told, it is futile to deny the fact that in
their eagerness to topple the Syrian government
and appease Israel, the War Party and its nation
partners created ISIL. Although they are at the
heart of the current sectarian inferno, they are
still going everywhere with their bombs and guns,
pretending to sell security insurance. It’s a
genuine madness on the loose, because the obvious
conclusion is this: Only Iraqis and Syrians, and
not Washington’s new shock and awe campaign, can
defeat the “American Caliphate” and rid its
medieval/violent ideology from their territories.

*Stop Obama's New War on Iraq and Syria*
In his speech on September 10, President Obama brought back the same old
failed strategy of military action to control the Iraq and Syrian regions
of the Middle East. Coming out of the NATO summit in Wales last week,
Obama was able to put together a new coalition of countries to wage war
against the people of Iraq and Syria. He has initiated a bombing campaign
in Iraq and says he will pursue IS (ISIS/ISIL) anywhere, including Syria.
[image: http://nepajac.org/ isisbombing.jpg]The U.S. government always comes
up with a pretext to justify its aggression towards other countries. In
Iraq, it has been Iraq's invasion of Kuwait, imagined weapons of mass
destruction, and now The Islamic State (IS/ISIS/ISIL). Make no mistake:
the U.S. bottom line has always been to "protect American interests," read
"control the energy resources and ensure profit for U.S. corporations." No
U.S. military intervention has ever improved the lives of the people in
those countries. In fact, the total opposite has occurred.
It is U.S. policies that have led to secular states in Iraq and Syria
becoming chaotic, sectarian, failed states that have brought terrible
living conditions to the people of those countries. The U.S. has been
attacking Iraq for decades, starting with its support for the 1980-88
Iraq/Iran war, which killed over a million soldiers from the two
countries. In 1990, the U.S. launched the Gulf war against Iraq, followed
by the imposition of sanctions that killed 1.5 million Iraqis and half a
million Iraqi children. The "Shock and Awe" war started by the U.S. with
the invasion and occupation of Iraq in 2003 never ended. Through these
actions, the U.S. has helped foster sectarian division in Iraq that allowed
for the present situation, where the country is deeply divided between
Kurds and Arabs and Sunni and Shia populations. In such a situation, the
U.S. is better able to fund and militarily support one faction over the
others for the price of doing the bidding of U.S. imperialism. In Iraq, a
succession of U.S. supported Shia regimes brought misery to the Iraqi
people, especially the Sunni population. So when IS starting taking
territory from the Iraqi puppet government, disenfranchised populations
were quick to support them as the lesser evil to the U.S. and its puppet
al-Maliki government.
Before the U.S. invaded in 2003, al-Qaeda had few supporters in Iraq. But
U.S. military aggression in the region, support of sectarian division and
support for Al-Qaeda like groups by U.S. allies like Saudi Arabia and Qatar
have been key to creating the situation that exists today in the region.
The U.S. is the enemy of the people of Iraq; it cannot be part of the
solution in that country. It is the problem. One year ago Obama announced
that he was going to bomb Syria. There was such an outcry against this act
of aggression that Obama had to go on TV and back off from his plan. But
his plans to intervene against the Assad regime and replace it with a
sectarian puppet government have never changed. So today, Obama is using
the backdoor method of attacking IS in Iraq and pursuing them in Syria as a
way to carry out his plans from a year ago.
Obama says that he will get Saudi Arabia to train "moderate" Syrian rebels
to continue his effort to overthrow the Assad government. But it is Saudi
Arabia and wealthy Saudis that has been the funding and arms source for IS
and other groups like al-Qaeda. Since the "rebels" have been so
discredited in Syria, the only way Obama's plan can work is if there is
outside intervention with boots on the ground. As in Libya, this may mean
foreign mercenaries in large numbers. The role of the U.S. coalition
partners in this process is something that antiwar forces must pay
attention to. A little at a time, Obama seems to be introducing more U.S.
ground forces as well.
Although the U.S. is now using IS as justification for intervention in both
Iraq and Syria, the U.S. has indirectly supported IS when it was fighting
Assad in Syria. The U.S. had admitted to giving non-lethal aid to Syrian
rebel groups that made its into the hands of IS in Syria, and there has
been evidence that the U.S. has trained fighters in Jordan that later
joined IS. But the main way that the U.S. has built IS and al-Qaeda is
through its military actions in Muslim countries throughout the area.
These interventions have helped the U.S. steal resources such as oil and
have caused death and destruction throughout the region. It is anger due
to these policies that has led to the growth of IS and other groups.
UNAC calls upon all antiwar and social justice organizations to start
protesting the new Iraq/Syria war by building demonstrations, press
conferences,
teach-ins, petition campaigns and other actions. UNAC is talking to other
antiwar groups and hopes to be able to call for more coordinated actions
soon.

Ukraine will buy US newest weapons systems - media
KYIV: Ukraine will buy one of the newest weapons systems in the United States in the near future - funds are provided in the budget.
Journalist Yuriy Butusov writes on Facebook.
"According to the source Tsenzor.Net, Ukraine will buy one of the newest weapons systems in the United States in the near future - funds are provided in the budget. A group of Ukrainian military personnel will be trained at one of the training centers of the United States - this agreement has been achieved. This is still a small step, but it may be the beginning of great positive changes. Arms are not of a lethal character, but the value is important. Analogues are not made in Ukraine," Butusov writes.
As reported by Ukrinform, President Barack Obama has allocated USD 25 million in military aid to Ukraine: USD 5 million will be spent on training of Ukrainian soldiers for direct military assistance to the Ukrainian government in the crisis conditions. USD 20 million will be used to provide non-lethal weapons Ukraine, produced by the U.S. companies.

U.S. Is Taking The 'Lesser Evil' Approach By Targeting ISIS In Syria
A little-known terrorist group that the US bombed in Syria was in the
advanced stages of a plot to blow up airliners with explosives
concealed in toothpaste, it has been reported.
The Khorasan Group, a relatively unknown Al Qaeda offshoot, was among
the groups targetted by the attacks on Syria on Tuesday, that also
hit Islamic State's enclave in the country.
One of the Khorasan Group's plots was to smuggle bombs on planes with
non-metallic devices, including toothpaste tubes. It was in the final
stages of planning the attack,
<http://www.huffingtonpost.co. uk/2014/09/24/http://edition. cnn.com/2014/09/23/world/ meast/isis-airstrikes/index. html>a
military source told CNN.
The group's plot was the reason behind the sudden decision to ban
uncharged mobile phones and electronic devices on flights in July this year.
This followed the intelligence that the group was working with Yemeni
bomb-makers to target airliners.
William C. Mayville Jr, director of operations for the US Joint
Chiefs of Staff, said the group was in the "final stages of plans to
execute major attacks against Western targets and potentially the US homeland".
James R Clapper, the US Director of National Intelligence, said last
week that Khorasan were more dangerous than IS "in terms of threat to
the homeland".
They are described as hardened jihadis from Afghanistan, Yemen and
Syria who are not interested in seizing land but carrying out major
attacks on the West.
Its members travelled to Syria but intelligence agencies believe they
were sent by al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri to recruit Westerners
already fighting there who could be more likely to get through
airline and immigration security, rather than to fight Assad's forces.
"They're in Syria but they're not really fighting in Syria," Michael
Leiter, the former director of the National Counterterrorism Center,

"They're using it as a place to find Western recruits."
Barack Obama called them "seasoned al Qaeda operatives."
"Once again, it must be clear to anyone who would plot against
America and try to do Americans harm that we will not tolerate safe
havens for terrorists who threaten our people," he said.
As well as around 200 air strikes launched with Arab allies on
Tuesday morning against IS, the US, on its own, launched around 20
Tomahawk cruise missiles against eight Khorasan Group targets near
Aleppo in the north west of the country.
These targetted "training camps, an explosives and munitions
production facility, a communications building and command and
control facilities," the Pentagon said.
US Attorney General Eric Holder

getting close to an execution date of some of the plans that we have seen.
"And the hitting that we did last night, I think, will probably
continue until we are at a stage where we think we have degraded
their ability to get at our allies or to the homeland."
Kuwaiti Muhsin al Fadhli, a long-term Al Qaeda member, is the leader
of the group.
He has been tracked by intelligence services for nearly a decade.

Ministry of Defence of Georgia
September 23, 2014
Meeting with Frank Boland
Director of Force Planning, NATO Defence Policy and Planning Directorate Frank Boland is paying an official visit to Georgia. Minister of Defence Irakli Alasnaia hosted the NATO official.
At the meeting held in the Ministry of Defence the implementation plan of the substantial package granted to Georgia at the NATO Summit was discussed. The sides also evaluated fulfillment of the commitments by Georgia under Planning and Review Process (PARP) and Annual National Program (ANP).
“This visit had two main purposes - one was to complete the work on the planning and review process assessment with Georgia which we do every two years and looking at implementation of partnership goals which we agreed last year. That’s gone very smoothly and I think we are very happy with the outcome. So we will for date, I believe in November for discussion of that with the allies in Brussels. The other major purpose was to discuss the implementation plan for the substantial package of cooperation that was agreed at the Wales Summit a few weeks ago. We spent the afternoon going through this in its final form and I have just spoken with the Minister about this. We’ve been working with the staff here in Tbilisi on continuing bases on this over the past three months. I think we’ve put together between this something which is very ambitious but realistic and likely to be accepted in the major part by Allies when it’s discussed next month. That
will cover the full range of issues which was set out in the summit declaration in relation to the substantive package to Georgia. I’m looking forward to taking that work forward and to see further improvements in interoperability and cooperation between Georgian and rest of the allies,” declared Frank Boland.
