INTERVIEW WITH US ECONOMIST EICHENGREEN
------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Europe's Banks Are in Far Greater Danger Than People Realize'
The European Union is hoping that aid to Greece and Ireland combined
with closer economic policy coordination will be enough to put an end to
the euro crisis. But that's not likely, warns US economist Barry
Eichengreen. First and foremost, he says in an interview with SPIEGEL,
Europe needs to help out its ailing banks.

Bavarian Party Wins Despite Loss of Guttenberg
Chancellor Angela Merkel announced a cabinet shuffle on Wednesday
following the abrupt resignation of her defense minister. Current

gained clout in the government.

THE WORLD FROM BERLIN
------------------------------------------------------------------------

'Merkel Has Disgraced Herself'
It didn't take long for Chancellor Angela Merkel to replace Karl-Theodor
zu Guttenberg, who resigned as defense minister on Tuesday. But, say
German commentators, it will take much longer to repair the damage done
-- both by Guttenberg's plagiarism scandal and her own poor handling of
the affair.

GENTRIFICATION'S VICTIMS
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Berlin Fears Rise of New Slums
Cheap rents and urban glamour have attracted trend-seekers from around
the world to central Berlin neighborhoods such as Kreuzberg and
Neukölln. But it is the current residents who are paying the price of
gentrification. They are being pushed out to high-rise developments on
the edge of the city, where poverty and violence are part of daily
life.

Mediterranean. Meanwhile, Libyan government sources have denied reports
of government-backed attacks in the rebel-held east.
