How 9/11 Triggered America's Decline
The events of Sept. 11, 2001 led to a wave of solidarity with the US.
But the superpower has lost that goodwill over the course of the wars it
subsequently waged. Now America is mainly seen not as the victim of
terrorism, but as a perpetrator of violence itself.

Ten Lost Years
Ten years have passed since Sept. 11, 2001, and today only losers
remain. Islam has been taken hostage by blinded ideologues. The West has
betrayed its values in its struggle against terror, and we are now
burdened with Islamophobes. Without 9/11, the crimes of Anders Behring
Breivik and the rise of right-wing populists in Europe would be
inconceivable.

VICIOUS ATTACK IN BERLIN
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Subway Beating Becomes Campaign Issue
A surveillance video showing the brutal attack of a man on a Berlin
subway platform went viral this April. As a trial against the two teens
accused of the crime unfolds, local politicians have turned public
transportation safety into a campaign issue for the city-state's rapidly
approaching election.

Germany Lacks Clear Plan for Climate Change
Germany is preparing for climate change by installing air
conditioners in overheated cities and irrigation systems on dry fields.
But a new federal proposal is short on details, state programs differ
and there is no solid plan for preparing the country for a warming
world.

German Edition of 'Wired' Hits the Newsstands
Germany finally has its own edition of Wired, the celebrated US
technology magazine. The first issue is attractive, varied and
entertaining, even if it recycles a bit too much content from the US
edition. Germany is sorely in need such a playful approach to the
digital world.

GERMANY'S EU COMMISSIONER OETTINGER

'Deficit Sinners' Flags Should Fly at Half-Mast'
With the debt crisis in Greece spiralling out of control, German EU
Energy Commissioner Günther Oettinger suggested some radical solutions
on Friday. Not only should EU officials take over tax collection for the
'obviously ineffective' Greeks, but 'deficit sinner' countries should be
made to fly their flags at half mast.

THE WORLD FROM BERLIN

'Germany Is in the Jihadists' Crosshairs'
Two men were arrested in Berlin on Thursday on suspicion of stockpiling
chemicals which could be used to build a bomb. German commentators have
praised the work of the security forces, but warn that, as the 10th
anniversary of 9/11 approaches, more needs to be done to combat
terrorism.

ILLEGAL FISHING CRACKDOWN

Trans-Atlantic Pact Targets 'Other Piracy'
Europe and the United States agreed this week to fight illegal fishing
together, but the terms were vague. Still, environmentalists
have welcomed their intentions, saying they hope tougher regulations
will eventually be created to curb large-scale poaching on the high
seas.

Taking the Pop-Up Restaurant to New Heights
Berlin, not Frankfurt, is known for creative dining pursuits like pop-up
restaurants and supper clubs. But as the competition for hip dining
heats up, a Berlin outfit has made the unexpected move to the staid
financial center. Perched atop a skyscraper, it claims to be world's
highest pop-up restaurant.
