ARTICLE 19 at Rio+20 earth summit

ARTICLE 19 is campaigning for the right to free expression and information to be central to the Rio+20 earth summit declaration. The rights to information, public participation, and access to justice are essential to sustainable development. Peru: ICCPR submission concerned with failure to protect free expression

ARTICLE 19 has submitted a report to the Country Task Force of the UN Human Rights Committee for its consideration in July 2012. The Task Force will examine the Fifth Periodic Report of the Peruvian Government on its implementation of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR). ARTICLE 19 raises concerns in its report regarding the Peruvian Government’s failure to protect the right to freedom of expression and information, as guaranteed in Article 19 of the ICCPR.  Read more >

Vietnam: Internet decree or Internet-phobia?

ARTICLE 19 is deeply concerned over Vietnam’s proposed Decree on Management, Provision and Use of Internet Services and Information on the Network, which is anticipated to be released later this month. The implementation of the decree will greatly obstruct the right to freedom of expression by prohibiting online anonymity and placing the duty on service providers to enforce the decree regulations.  Read more>

Kazakhstan: Activists arrested on charges of inciting hatred

Theatre Director Bolat Atabayev and public activist Zhanbolat Mamai have today (15 June 2012) been arrested in Almaty and placed into Kazakhstan’s National Security Committee (KNB) detention facility.  This follows a court decision of 14 June 2012 to formally arrest them, stemming from their absence from interrogations conducted into incitement of social discord leading to the riots in Zhanaozen in December 2012 with which they are charged. Read more>

No football for women

The live broadcast of Euro 2012 in cinemas has been stopped by Iranian police because of the presence of women in the audience. Women in Iran are being banned from watching live public screenings of Euro 2012 football games because of an “inappropriate” environment where men could become rowdy. I am sure the officials had good intentions though. They simply want women to stay back in a safe place and prepare food for their rowdy men when return home from the screenings. Read more>
