Saakashvili: 'Georgia Has Real Chance to Join NATO in 2014'
Tbilisi: Georgia has “a real chance” to become a NATO member in 2014, President Saakashvili said on June 25, while speaking about parliamentary elections planned for October.
“Not only we will maintain our course towards prosperity and European integration – and in 2014 we have a real chance to become a NATO member and it also will actually be decided in October [elections] – but the following months will mark huge steps ahead in this direction,” Saakashvili said.
After NATO summit in Chicago President Saakashvili said on May 21, that Georgia would be in the best possible “shape” for next NATO summit and there would be no reason to reject Georgia’s membership to the alliance.
“The next summit will probably take place in 2014 and I think that Georgia will have a very good chances; I’ve never been so sure about it as I am now,” Saakashvili said on May 21. “If our progress continues – and it will definitely continue – we will be in the best shape for the next summit and it will be extremely difficult to explain by that time why Georgia should not be accepted to join the NATO; of course much work has to be done,” he said.

NATO General visits MoD
General Mieczyslaw Bieniek, NATO Deputy Supreme Allied Commander Transformation, is paying an official visit to Georgia.
Chief of the Joint Staff of the GAF [Georgian Armed Forces] Maj. Gen. Devi Chankotadze has hosted the NATO military official today.
The NATO-Georgia partnership, Georgia`s contribution to the ISAF mission and ongoing defence reforms were the main topics of discussions at the meeting.
"Georgia is the most reliable partner and doing a lot of transformation effort in order to transform the Armed Forces, as well as the involvement of Georgia in the ISAF operation is valuable", said General Bieniek after the meeting. According to him, Georgia`s aspiration toward NATO has been once more been confirmed at the Bucharest and Chicago summits and Georgia is making a lot of efforts on its way to NATO integration.
The visit of the NATO general to Georgia will last for two days. In the scope of the visit he took a tour of the National Defence Academy and delivered a lecture for Academy students on NATO's Allied Command Transformation. A meeting is also scheduled with NATO member states` defence attachés accredited to Georgia.

What's behind NATO's reaction to downed Turkish jet?

Although NATO is not considering military action over the shooting down of a Turkish fighter jet in Syria, what happened is unacceptable and deserves condemnation, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said after a NATO emergency meeting on Syria. His statement indicates NATO’s reluctance to use military force against Damascus.
On June 22, Syrian troops shot down a Turkish jet fighter. Syria insists that the plane violated its airspace and was destroyed over its territorial waters not far from the Latakia province. The pilots have not been found. Syrian commanders say they acted in full compliance with the law.
Turkey, which initially acknowledged that its F-4 fighter jet had crossed into Syrian airspace, now claims that it was in international airspace the moment the attack occurred.
Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu admitted soon after the incident that the plane had crossed the Syrian border 15 minutes before the attack. Later, Ankara retracted this statement and took a tougher stance. President Recep Tayyip Erdogan recalled that Syrian helicopters had intruded into Turkish airspace on five occasions and that no retaliatory action followed. He made clear this would not be the case any more.
Some analysts think that the plane incident aimed at probing the combat readiness of the Syrian air defense forces.
On the other hand, it could be used as a pretext for a military operation against Syria. But NATO’s reaction to the incident makes the latter scenario unlikely.
Russian analyst Alexander Khramchikhin thinks that the latest hollow statement from Brussels is a sign that NATO is not planning any military intervention in Syria at least for the time being.
Political scientist Sergei Markov argues that intervention has actually started. Foreign mercenaries are fighting on the opposition’s side, and Syrian refugee camps in Turkey are being used to train armed opposition fighters.

The US cadets trained at Sachkhere Mountain Training School
Cadets of the United States Military University finished a Basic Mountain Training Summer Course. A course graduation ceremony was organized at the base of the Sachkhere Mountain Training School. American cadets were granted certificates and special badges.
28 cadets of the U.S. Military University underwent the course of study within the framework of cooperation between the United States and Georgia. The Basic Mountain Training Summer Course lasted from 4 till 23 of June. During a three week-long summer course the foreign cadets adopted mountain-technical skills.
The Sachkhere Mountain Training School instructors trained future military servicemen in crossing techniques over mountains, high mountains, rivers and ravines. They also practiced in providing first medical care and got familiar with evacuation methods.
In the scope of the course, with the help of the Georgian instructors, trainees carried out technical climbing and descending from rocks.
The solemn graduation ceremony was attended by Deputy Chiefs of Joint Staff of GAF Colonel Arsen Tsukhishvili, Colonel Lasha Beridze, representatives of NATO Liaison Office in Georgia and Diplomatic Corps.
