American Extremist Killed 
Douglas McAuthur McCain was born in Illinois, grew up in Minnesota, and died at the age of 33 in Syria on Sunday. An American fighting for the extremist group ISIS, McCain converted to Islam in 2004 and went from talk of basketball to Islamist propaganda. Meanwhile, the U.S. is launching reconnaissance missions over Syria to look for possible targets in retaliation for the killing of American journalist James Foley.

Napa Quake Recovery 
Cleanup efforts are underway in and around Napa, California, following a 6.0-magnitude earthquake that struck the area on Sunday. A series of aftershocks, including one 3.9-magnitude jolt — the biggest yet — continues to rock through the region. Two patients remain hospitalized, including a 13-year-old boy who’s speaking out after being nearly crushed by a fireplace.

Legroom Fight Forces Landing 
It was a fight that broke out over legroom and eventually forced an emergency landing. Officials say a passenger on United flight 1462 wanted to recline her seat, when she was blocked by a passenger using a device called “Knee Defender.” The $22 gadget, banned by most airlines, spurred an argument so unruly it diverted an entire flight to Chicago.

Beluga Whale Makes a Splash 
Juno the whale has a reputation for putting on quite a show before visitors at Connecticut’s Mystic Aquarium. Video of it playfully taunting two children safely shielded by a glass tank wall has now gone viral.
