Bulgaria Outraged by Dutch Discrimination Site

Bulgaria has reacted strongly to the new initiative of the Dutch Freedom Party of Geert Wilders which presented a special site where the Dutch can submit complaints about Eastern Europeans.

Vesela Cherneva, spokesperson of the Bulgarian Foreign Affairs Ministry, says her institution cannot accept the fact that one of the countries founders of the European Union is tolerating incitement to hatred, discrimination and xenophobia, in contradiction of the Charter of Fundamental Human Rights.

The announcement about the launch of the new project is displayed on the party's official website along with a link for access.

The site, titled "Complaints about Central and Eastern Europeans," boasts slogans such as "Do you have problems with people from Central and Eastern Europe?" and "Have you lost your job because of a Pole, a Bulgarian, a Romanian? We want to know." It also displays media headlines reporting how Eastern Europeans commit more and more crime.

The Bulgarian "Dnevnink" daily quotes a representative of the Freedom Party, saying that the site has the goal of revealing all problems created by people from Central and Eastern Europe such as crime, alcohol consumption, use of illegal drugs and prostitution. He stresses that the complaints will be reported by the party to the Ministry of Labor with the goal to help Dutch people who have stopped complaining over the inactivity of the institutions.

Cherneva states that this not only shows internal problems in the Netherlands, but is a threat for the entire EU and its values and appeals to the Dutch cabinet to differentiate from the party's initiative and undertake the necessary measures.

Bulgaria's official position is being presented Friday before the Dutch Ambassador in Sofia, while Bulgaria is also deciding if it should alert the European Ombudsman and the European Commission.

Romanian media report Friday that the Romanian authorities have also reacted strongly to the Dutch initiative and accuse Wilders' party of discrimination.

The Dutch government remains the strongest obstacle for the two countries joining of the Schengen zone and is adamant it would continue to block it until it sees at least two positive EC reports, noting significant progress in the fight against corruption and organized crime.

17 Bulgarian Cities to Rise against ACTA

People from 17 Bulgarian cities and towns are going to rally against the notorious ACTA, the anti-online piracy deal, on Saturday, February 11, 2012, joining thousands in a global protest coordinated by Stopp ACTA.

The so called Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), initiated by the United States and Japan, seeks to protect intellectual property rights, "including infringement taking place in the digital environment".

The Anti-counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA) has come under fire from various sides, with Bulgarians being especially concerned about its effect on torrent tracker sites, and the persecution of content sharing.

ACTA was signed by the European Union and 22 of its 27 member states in January. It was signed by Bulgaria, together with three dozen developed nations.

As it is expected to crack down on torrent tracker sites, it has been met with a wave of opposition in Bulgaria which led the Bulgarian government to declare that it would apply ACTA "with reservations". In Poland, the government of Donald Tusk said recently it froze the ratification of ACTA over the massive protests, including street rallies.

But since January, the treaty has been the subject of protest, mainly online, by people who say it will require signatory countries to punish even non-commercial breaches of copyright with criminal prosecution and jail terms.

The Bulgarian cities and towns that are to hold protest rallies against ACTA on February 11 are Sofia Varna, Burgas, Plovdiv, Kardzhali, Haskovo, Yambol, Razgrad, Ruse, Gabrovo, Veliko Tarnovo, Stara Zagora, Vidin, Pernik, Pazardzhik, Kazanlak, Sandanski.
