Wife Sees Jailed, 'Half-Alive' Belarus Activist Jailed Belarusian opposition activist Syarhey Kavalenka has received a visit from his wife, Alena, at the Vitsebsk detention center where he is being held pending transfer to a penal colony. More Belarus has asked the Polish and European Union ambassadors to leave the country and recalled its own envoys from Poland and the EU "for consultations" in a tit-for-tat response to an expansion of sanctions against it by Brussels, sparking the threatened withdrawal of all EU member ambassadors to Minsk. More While the EU has approved new sanctions against Belarus, oligarch Yury Chizh was removed from Brussels' blacklist amid opposition by Slovenia. Critics suggest the alleged plot was timed to draw sympathy for Putin amid a wave of protests against the powerful leader.
