NATO drills being held in Estonia encourage Kyiv's forceful actions - Grushko

MOSCOW/BRUSSELS: NATO drills being held in Estonia encourage Kyiv to commit forceful actions, Russia's Permanent Representative to NATO Alexander Grushko said.

"NATO drills being held in Estonia, the largest ones since 1991, are accompanied by bellicose rhetoric and only encourage Kyiv to continue the punitive operation against its own people," Grushko told Interfax on Wednesday.

"NATO prefers to not recall the February appeals to the Ukrainian armed forces to maintain their neutral status and not to interfere in the domestic conflict," he said.

Kyiv is being provided with enhanced support in the framework of the cooperation program of NATO-Ukraine committee. Grushko said.

"NATO should realize that they are responsible for the criminal actions of its 'partner for peace'," he said.

NATO begins military drills with 6,000 troops in Estonia

Amid the rising crisis in Ukraine, NATO has begun military drills in Estonia with a record high six thousand troops.

The three-week "Spring Storm" drills also include a cyber security team from France for the first time. In addition, Poland has sent three Sukhoi-22 attack aircraft and a missile defense system unit.

This year, military manoeuvres will be held in five out of fifteen Estonian counties, including southern and southeastern regions close to the border with Russia. Since April the 29th, Britain, France, and the US have been deploying troops to the Baltic region. And a group of NATO ships also arrived in the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda on May the 2nd. US troops will stay in Estonia till the end of this year.

UK troops arrive in Estonia for training exercise

The Secretary of State for Defence, Philip Hammond, is accompanying soldiers from 1st Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment (1 LANCS).

The soldiers from 1 LANCS, who have worked alongside their Estonian counterparts in Afghanistan, are taking part in Exercise Spring Storm, the final exercise for Estonian conscripts after a year of national service.

The British soldiers, consisting of the battalion’s tactical headquarters and Burma Company, will be acting as ‘enemy forces’ for the largest army exercise in the Estonians’ training calendar.

Philip Hammond said:

British troops will be training alongside their Estonian counterparts as part of a range of UK military activities supporting our Baltic Nato allies.

This exercise is about maintaining close working relationships with our key allies in the region, and particularly the Estonian army, with whom we enjoy a proud history of operating together, most recently in Afghanistan.

The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment has formed extremely close ties with the Scouts Battalion, the Estonian army’s only regular army infantry unit.

This began in 2005 when the Reserve Battalion, 4th Battalion The Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, trained with them in Estonia and Lithuania and continued onto operations in Afghanistan.

Lieutenant Colonel George Maund, commanding officer of 1 LANCS, said:

The battalion is delighted to be taking part in this important exercise and looking forward to building on the excellent relationship we have formed with Estonian forces on operations in Afghanistan.

This exercise gives my soldiers an excellent opportunity to develop joint operating skills with a long-standing and valued Nato partner and they are looking forward to the experience immensely.

Exercise Spring Storm 2014 will last until 23 May and during this a formal ‘bond of friendship’ will be exchanged in a ceremony that will cement the deepening relationship.

Russia’s Lavrov Vows to Cast Light on Odessa Carnage Calling it 'Clear Fascism'

MOSCOW: Russia’s Foreign Ministry Sergei Lavrov has pledged to shed light on all the uncomfortable truths about the Odessa massacre last Friday, which killed scores of peaceful pro-federalization protesters in the southern Ukrainian port city.

“What happened in Odessa on May 2 is clear fascism. We will not allow the facts to be swept under the rug like the ruling coalition is presently trying to do by closing the investigation from the general public,” Lavrov said at a flower laying ceremony for Victory Day in Moscow.

The regime in Ukraine has been accused by the Odessa Council officials of hushing up the real death toll of the arson fire at the local trade union hall that was caused by a raving pro-coup mob laced with the Right Sector militia hurling Molotov cocktails into the building.

A paramedic that was among the first responders later said that the attackers had stopped ambulance teams from reaching the survivors who managed to flee the deadly blaze.

“We will push for the truth, we will push so that all of the evidence that was given by witnesses and tell the story of the magnitude of the tragedy that is being consciously hushed by the authorities, so that not one piece of truth remains uninvestigated and that it is all made public,” Lavrov said.

The clashes in Odessa broke out last Friday between pro-federalization activists on one side and fans of the Odessa and Kharkiv football teams on the other, joined by Euromaidan activists.

Pro-Kiev radicals blockaded the anti-government protesters in the House of Trade Unions and set it on fire. At least 46 people died, three went missing and 214 were injured in the Odessa clashes, according to Ukraine’s Interior Ministry. On Monday, a member of the Odessa regional council told RIA Novosti that Ukraine’s interim authorities were hiding from the public the true death toll in Friday’s tragedy in in Odessa, which actually claimed 116 lives.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called the events a result of the «criminal irresponsibility of the Kiev leadership indulging insolent nationalist radicals, including Right Sector, who are staging a campaign of physical terror against supporters of federalization and real constitutional changes in Ukrainian society."

Russia’s Lavrov Calls Odessa Tragedy Testimony to Rise of Fascism

MOSCOW: The recent tragedy in the southern Ukrainian city of Odessa demonstrates Europe’s willful ignorance of the rebirth of fascist ideology, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Wednesday.

“For years Europe has closed its eyes on the fact that this [fascist] ideology is gaining new backers, its supporters are enlisting new followers, holding marches in honor of former SS individuals who were convicted criminals by the Nurnberg Tribunal,” Lavrov said at a flower laying ceremony for Victory Day in Moscow.

“But this is happening now, this is not just simply marches with banners praising Nazi criminals, it is already the appearance of live fascism,” he added.

The comments were in response to the tragedy last Friday in Ukraine’s Odessa, where scores of peaceful pro-referendum protesters were burned alive inside a trade union hall.

Earlier, a Kiev-based reporter with the Voice of Israel, Edward Dox, told RIA Novosti that Nazism and anti-Semitism had been a growing problem in Ukraine ever since the regime in Kiev seized control of the country.

Dox said the new government didn’t even try to dissociate itself from the heritage of Nazi collaborator Stepan Bandera. Those in power in Kiev, especially from the Svoboda and Right Sector parties, frequently employ anti-Semitic rhetoric, he added.

With the presidential campaign in Ukraine in full swing, a slew of Ukrainian presidential candidates have been actively propagating their far-right views.

Presidential hopeful Oleh Tyahnybok is an active promoter of the ultranationalist ideas of Bandera, who collaborated with Nazi Germany during World War II in the wartime ethnic cleansing of Poles, Jews and Russians.

Dmitry Yarosh, who is also one of the presidential candidates, heads the Right Sector radical nationalistic movement, which was an important force at the Euromaidan protests in Kiev.

Odessa Tragedy Planned by Authorities’ Representatives – Kiev Official

KIEV: Last Friday’s massacre in Ukraine’s Odessa that left more than 40 people dead was a well-coordinated and planned operation with the participation of representatives of the authorities in Kiev, Ukraine’s acting Prosecutor General Oleh Makhnitsky said Wednesday.

“This action was not prepared at some internal level, it was a well-planned and coordinated action in which some authorities’ representatives have taken part,” Makhnitsky said.

Makhnitsky promised to reveal the names of those who took part in the tragedy that occurred in Odessa.

On Friday, 46 pro-federalization activists died and over 200 others were injured in a fire after being trapped in the trade union building in Odessa that was set ablaze during a clash between anti-coup activists and pro-regime supporters in the city.

The skirmishes were the bloodiest episode of violence in Ukraine since the start of the Ukrainian crisis in February. On Wednesday, the first refugees from Odessa arrived at Yevpatoria in Russia’s Crimea.

Crimean officials said the two families had been witnesses of the tragedy.

Ukraine Regime Covering Up Odessa Death Toll – Regional Councilman

MOSCOW: Odessa regional councilman Vadim Savenko has accused the Ukrainian interim government of covering up the true death toll of last week's Odessa arson fire that allegedly killed 46 people.

The official said the actual number of people who perished in the trade union hall blaze stands at 116, with many more reported missing.

“According to our present assessments, there were 116 deaths … because, apart from the official number of 46 victims, many people are still unaccounted for. And we know exactly what happened to these people. They were simply put on the ‘missing’ list,” Savenko told RIA Novosti in an exclusive interview.

The Odessa official said at least 20 anti-coup protesters had been killed in the clashes prior to the arson incident, and their bodies had been brought to the trade union center.

Savenko stressed that figures circulated by the media over the past few days had been provided by the Ukrainian Interior and Emergency Ministries, and their account of the event still leaves much room for doubt.

“For two days, they barred journalists and relatives from coming to identify the bodies. We can assume they spent this time covering up the crime that had been committed there.”

One of the photos uploaded to the Internet after the Odessa massacre showed one of the victims was a pregnant woman, who had been suffocated. “If you look at how the bodies lay there or at their wounds, you’ll notice bullet holes in their heads and pools of blood underneath,” Savenko noted.

“The majority of the people [who were blocked inside the trade union hall] have scorched torsos, heads and shoulders …They had gasoline poured over them after being shot dead and set on fire in a cover-up operation,” he told RIA Novosti.

Last Friday, Ukraine saw the bloodiest violence since the February overthrow of President Viktor Yanukovych, with dozens burnt to death inside a blocked House of Trade Unions in the southern port city of Odessa.

The clashes in Odessa broke out between federalization activists on one side and fans of the Odessa and Kharkiv football teams on the other, joined by Euromaidan activists. The anti-government protesters sought refuge inside the building that was then set on fire by pro-Kiev radicals.

The Russian Foreign Ministry called the events a result of the “criminal irresponsibility of the Kiev leadership indulging insolent nationalist radicals, including Right Sector, who are staging a campaign of physical terror against supporters of federalization and real constitutional changes in Ukrainian society."

NATO justified in reinforcing defence of Allies, Secretary General says in visit to Poland

NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said the Alliance was fully justified in reinforcing the defence of Poland and other Allies in wake of the Ukraine crisis. “Russia’s illegal and illegitimate aggression against Ukraine is the greatest challenge to Europe’s security in a generation. So we have rightly reinforced the defence of our Allies, including Poland,” the Secretary General said at the start of his visit to Warsaw on Wednesday (7 May 2014).

Mr. Fogh Rasmussen is in Poland for talks with Polish government leaders to discuss the Ukraine crisis and preparations for the Alliance’s Summit in Wales this September. “NATO’s greatest responsibility is to protect and defend our populations and territory,” he said ahead of a working dinner with Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski and Defence Minister Tomasz Siemoniak. Allies have deployed ships and aircraft “demonstrating the Alliance’s vigilance and resolve, from the Baltic to the Black Sea,” Mr.Fogh Rasmussen said, adding that NATO stood ready to take further steps, with enhanced exercises, updated defence plans, and appropriate deployments. “We have sent an unmistakable message to Russia: your behaviour does not belong in the 21st century and your rhetoric draws on obscure clichés of the Cold War,” said the Secretary General.

He urged Russia to de-escalate the crisis, live up to its international obligations, stop supporting separatists and pull back its troops from Ukraine’s borders so that a political solution can be found to the crisis. Mr. Fogh Rasmussen also said that Russia should stop undermining the 25 May presidential elections in Ukraine.

On Thursday the Secretary General will hold talks with President Bronislaw Komorowsky and Prime Minister Donald Tusk before leaving for Tallinn, Estonia, where he will join NATO ambassadors in a visit to the Alliance’s Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence. He will also deliver a key note speech at the University of Tallinn and meet with Estonian President, Mr. Toomas Ilves, Prime Minister, Mr. Taavi Roivas and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Urmas Paet.

15,000 Ukrainian Troops on Russian Border – Russian Defense Ministry

MOSCOW: Russian Deputy Defense Minister Anatoly Antonov said Thursday there were 15,000 Ukrainian troops stationed near the border with Russia.

“The concentration of Ukrainian troops on the Russian-Ukrainian border is continuing. There is a contingent of 15,000 Ukrainian military personnel,” Antonov said.

He also noted the buildup of NATO troops in Eastern Europe.

“In the conditions of the continuing crisis in Ukraine, these actions , to say the least, are not helping the de-escalation of tensions in Ukraine,” Antonov said.

He also called on NATO and the Pentagon to stop their “cynical deceptions” to the world community in regard to the situation on the border with Ukraine.

NATO’s top military commander Gen. Philip Breedlove said earlier that NATO will consider permanently stationing troops in parts of Eastern Europe following the increased tensions over Ukraine, Reuters reported.

The organization also accused Russia of deploying approximately 35,000-40,000 troops in the vicinity of the Ukrainian border, in preparation for a military intervention in Ukraine.

Moscow has repeatedly said it has nothing to hide about its military exercises conducted near the Ukrainian border and international inspections have already proven them non-threatening.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said earlier that Russia had moved its troops away from Ukraine’s border and they are currently located at their bases, where they are conducting regular training. He said that this could be easily confirmed using modern reconnaissance satellites.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Tuesday that Russia had explained the situation related to the exercises of its troops near the Ukrainian border thousands of times.

“Our army is on its territory and is exercising the activities that are not prohibited by anyone, that do not violate any legal or moral principles, and that figure in the framework of international agreements,” Lavrov said, adding that Moscow has allowed various observer missions to monitor the exercises.

US pushes to complete ‘project for military domination of entire planet’

United States is doing everything to dominate the world militarily by expanding NATO into Eastern Europe and building up the Pacific Command contingents to keep China in place, political analyst and writer Rick Rozoff told RT.

RT: What do they mean by 'positioning' here exactly, after the alliance’s top military commander said NATO may station permanently additional troops in Eastern Europe?

Rick Rozoff: To complete its project for military domination of the entire planet. You know, the short and accurate answer to that question.

The US has in the post-Cold War period been developing particularly bilateral – but also many times collective – military partnerships with arguably every country in the world, with the possible exception of maybe a dozen or so. That is the US’ graduating officers from military academies in the US; the military presence and advisers; conducting military exercises in all parts of the world.

And this is something, of course, unprecedented in history where one… I’ll use the term employed by the commander-in-chief of the US armed forces technically, the president of the US, Barack Obama, who – if this isn’t the greatest irony in history, I don’t know what is – on the occasion of receiving the Nobel Peace Prize in December 2009 referred to himself a commander-in-chief of a nation at war in two countries, but also identified his nation, the US, as being “the world’s sole military super-power.” That’s a quote.

And Secretary Of Defense, Pentagon chief, Chuck Hagel, is simply following through on that premise that the US is going to sustain and expand its military presence internationally and all parts of the world. That’s the US intention.

RT: This comes shortly after US defence minister Chuck Hagel declared, that despite budget cuts, the Pentagon is set to strengthen its military presence world-wide. Can the US afford this?

NR: Economically – no. I mean, I live in a country where many of us can’t afford even elementary healthcare, dental care, optical care; can’t afford to pay our rent. You know, having major problems – but three years ago the US spent $718 billion on the official Pentagon budget, which works out at almost $2,400 for every man, child and woman in the US.

Can we afford it? No. It the political elite in the US hell-bent on enforcing it on our population in terms of financing it and in terms, you know, around the world, in terms of deploying US military personnel and hardware. Unfortunately, that’s a political issue. It’s one that would have to be answered by the American people refusing to any longer subsidize such global military expansion.

RT: So NATO has already built-up its military might in the region. It also said it's ready to take action to protect its allies. Just what kind of dangers and action could we be talking about?

NR: You know, the US has ways of influencing people short of military bombardment, not that it’s hesitant to do that as we know. We can simply look at what’s going on in Ukraine and Syria right now where the US fighting, essentially, proxy wars. All the hot wars of the last 25 I don’t have to iterate, I suspect.

But the US is also capable of bribing, subverting and in other ways winning the approval for the US military collaboration in countries. More recently say in Myanmar, which has been one of the, perhaps, dozen countries that didn’t have a direct military partnership with the US directly and is now heading in that direction. You may recall that Pentagon chief Hagel spoke about increased US military collaboration with the Association of South-East Asian Nations, of which Myanmar is member. The other are already solidly in the US military camp, including if one can believe it, Vietnam; also Cambodia; Laos, the South-East Asian Nations member that’s for a while has been holding off, but it looks like the state department has been able to soften its opposition to the US military partnerships as it did with Vietnam and Myanmar earlier.

So again, you have a small handful of countries that manage to stay out of the US military orbit – Russia, China, Iran being the major ones.

RT: Can you elaborate more on what falls into US military orbit?

NR: Well, the Asian Pacific pivot what you referring to that was announced at the White House as well as the Pentagon two years ago, was to shift as much as 60 percent of total US naval and air-force assets to the Asian Pacific region where the Pacific Command of the US military is.

Again the US is alone in history of having carved up an entire globe into military commands, but the Pacific Command is the largest of them all. It takes the largest space. It has the largest amount of troops and military hardware assigned to it, but it is going to grow way larger. One can suspect that the reason for that is that US is comfortable in having subjugated an entire European continent, minus Russia, under NATO with NATO expansion. And similarly to have gained control of the Mediterranean base through most of Africa, related and analogous military programs. So, that the really one place to move against now is China and to do that they are stepping up the military presence in the Asian Pacific region.

RT:Can US public opinion influence the decision to deploy troops?

NR: Mr. Hagel, really sincerity does not care whatsoever what the American populace feels like anything, much less military spending and military deployments. We have a government that is not accountable to people on any important issues.

We have a corrupt, money driven political system, two party monopoly that disallows any sort of meaningful participation by citizens in the political process. That is simply incontestable. It is getting worse by the day. Political candidates, certainly for federal office, are vetted by the major merchants of death, if you will, by the arms manufacturers. And if they in any way or form stand in opposition to the US global military expansion, their opponents or so are handsomely funded in campaigns that they stand no chance of being elected.

OPINION: Permanent NATO Deployment to Threaten Peace in East Europe

Lyudmila Chernova

WASHINGTON: NATO’s permanent presence in Eastern Europe will not restore stability and security to the continent, rather it will threaten peace in the region, Martin Sieff, an Irish-American veteran journalist and author, told RIA Novosti.

“Such a move would seriously threaten peace instead,” Sieff said Wednesday. “The first order of business for US and European leaders should be to seek to end the rapidly escalating violence in Ukraine and to pressure the interim Ukrainian government to restrain its own militias.”

On Wednesday, NATO’s top military commander, US General Philip Breedlove, claimed that Russia’s “direct involvement in agitating the situation in eastern Ukraine” created a “new paradigm” in the region that allegedly forced the military alliance to permanently station American troops in Eastern Europe.

Sieff, a multi-Pulitzer Prize nominee, stressed that US leaders need to remember that Russia did not cause this crisis, but prominent European leaders did.

“They flew to Kiev and openly fanned and encouraged violent protests that became a violent revolution which overthrew a peaceful, constitutionally elected democratic government,” Sieff explained. “The collapse of the government in Ukraine next door to Russia is of obvious immediate national security concern to Russia.”

He claimed that Washington and Brussels need to establish a new, serious and constructive dialogue with Moscow that acknowledges Russia’s historic interests in the region and its own very real security concerns.

“Beyond this, Western leaders need to acknowledge the deep, real divisions within Ukraine and to work constructively with Russia to create a new federalized and decentralized structure for the country that will reassure different parts of the country,” Sieff emphasized.

He thinks that the creation of an atmosphere of mutual understanding and trust between NATO and the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), and between the United States and the Russian Federation are the two most important security issues necessary to maintain world peace.

“I fear that policymakers in Washington and Brussels have lost sight of this fundamental truth,” the journalist asserted, adding that General Breedlove’s comments “reflect the widespread Western misconception that talking tough to Russia without considering her interests or the real problems now facing the Ukrainian people can substitute for real understanding and a willingness to listen, compromise and cooperate to defuse the crisis and restore lasting peace and stability to Eastern Europe,” said Sieff.

NATO has repeatedly blamed Russia for the escalation of tensions in Ukraine and building up arms and troops on the country’s border. Earlier, it already used the crisis to justify an expansion of its military forces near Russian borders and bumped up the number of air patrol missions in Eastern Europe.

Russia has threatened to station short-range Iskander nuclear-capable missiles in the country’s European Kaliningrad region in response to US missile shield plans.
