The White House confirmed Monday that President Barack Obama did exchange emails with Hillary Clinton and her private email account when she was secretary of state, but said he didn’t realize the account was a personal one.
White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest told reporters Monday that the president had emailed Clinton, but was unaware of how the personal email address was set up.
“The president, as I think many people expected, did over the course of his first several years in office trade emails with his secretary of state,” Earnest said, adding that the number of emails was not large, according to the Hill.
President Obama told CBS News on Sunday that he learned about Clinton’s use of a personal email address for official business “the same time everybody else learned about it through news reports.”
Earnest said that while Obama knew Clinton’s email address, he was not aware of the details regarding its use or compliance with federal regulations.
“The point that the president was making is not that he didn’t know Secretary Clinton’s email address. He did. But he was not aware of the details of how that email address and that server had been set up, or how Secretary Clinton and her team were planning to comply with the Federal Records Act,” he said.
Earnest’s comments arrive just one week after The New York Times first revealed Clinton’s use of a private domain, “clintonnemail.com,” to create an email address hosted on a home server while serving as the nation’s top diplomat. The server that handled the account was traced to an internet service registered to Clinton’s home in Chappaqua, New York.
The State Department did not initially retain records of the personal emails, but about two months ago Clinton’s team selected and turned over 55,000 pages of emails in response to an agency request. The State Department is looking at the emails, but said it will take “several months” to review them all and clear them for release to the public.
Rep. Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.), the chairman of the House committee investigating the 2012 attack on the US embassy in Benghazi, Libya, said this weekend that there are gaps in the emails that Clinton submitted.
Clinton has not answered questions about her personal email address. In a tweet last week, she said she asked the State Department to release her emails from her tenure there. On Monday, Politico cited anonymous sources in a report stating that Clinton plans to address her use of private email this week in what is likely to be a press conference in New York. If it goes ahead, it will be the first press conference Clinton has held since leaving the State Department.

Four people, including an officer who worked at a police intelligence center, are being held over alleged links to Amedy Coulibaly, the kosher deli hostage-taker who killed five people during terror attacks in Paris earlier this year.
The suspects are being questioned as part of the ongoing investigation into the January attacks – including the massacre at satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo – which claimed 17 lives in three days.
A policewoman identified only as Emmanuelle is among the suspects, French media reported. The woman – who converted to Islam two years ago, unbeknownst to her superiors – was stationed at a high-security police intelligence headquarters in the eastern suburbs of Paris at the time of the attacks.
Emmanuelle allegedly switched her police cap for an Islamic headscarf when leaving work. Sources close to the investigation say there is no evidence directly linking her to the Jewish deli attack.
In the aftermath of the massacre, Emmanuelle allegedly consulted computer files on her boyfriend, Amar R., who is also one of the four currently being questioned. The woman was reportedly trying to find out how much authorities knew about her boyfriend, who is believed to be a relative of Coulibaly. Emmanuelle was suspended from her duties at the end of last month, according to Le Figaro.
Amar R. was seen near the kosher supermarket and in the company of Coulibaly in the lead-up to the January 9 attack. He was arrested on January 23 under a European arrest warrant issued by Spain for drug trafficking and arms smuggling. However, he had not been questioned about the Paris attacks until now.
Details of the other two suspects have not yet been released.
Coulibaly fatally shot an unarmed policewoman on January 8 before taking hostages at the Porte Vincennes supermarket in the east of Paris the following day. After Coulibaly shot and killed four other people, police stormed the building and fatally shot him.
During the siege, Coulibaly told authorities that he had coordinated the attack with the Charlie Hebdo killers, but did not provide any additional details.
His widow, Hayat Boumeddiene, crossed into Syria on January 8 after traveling to Turkey a week earlier.

Medical marijuana now has some powerful, bipartisan supporters in the US Senate. In what pot activists say is a historic first, three senators announced they will introduce a bill that would end the federal ban on medical marijuana.
Sens. Cory Booker (D-New Jersey), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-New York) and Rand Paul (R-Kentucky) will unveil their bill ‒ called the Compassionate Access, Research Expansion and Respect States (CARERS) Act ‒ on Tuesday. If passed, the bill would “allow patients, doctors and businesses in states that have already passed medical marijuana laws to participate in those programs without fear of federal prosecution,” according to a joint statement.
So far, 23 states and the District of Columbia have legalized medical marijuana. Another dozen states have passed or are in the process of passing legislation regulating the use of cannabidiol (CBD) oils in those locations. However, if the federal government so chooses, they could prosecute the prescription pot users for violating national drug laws.
Several bills that would legalize medical marijuana on the federal level have already been introduced in the House of Representatives. Approximately two-thirds of Americans believe the federal government should not interfere with state laws on the subject, according to a poll published in December.
“The introduction of this legislation in the Senate demonstrates just how seriously this issue is being taken on Capitol Hill,” Dan Riffle of the Marijuana Policy Project said in a statement. “This is a significant step forward when it comes to reforming marijuana laws at the federal level.”
Advocates of using the plant for medicinal use cheered the senators’ move.
“Almost half the states have legalized marijuana for medical use; it’s long past time to end the federal ban,” Michael Collins, policy manager for the Drug Policy Alliance (DPA), said in a statement. “This bipartisan legislation allows states to set their own medical marijuana policies and ends the criminalization of patients, their families, and the caregivers and dispensary owners and employees who provide them their medicine.”
Paul has previously railed against several fellow Republicans who have said they are against medical marijuana, specifically potential 2016 GOP presidential candidate Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida.
Bush told the Boston Globe in January that he had drank alcohol and smoked pot in high school. However, he has consistently opposed efforts to legalize marijuana or even loosen its penalties, Politico reported. The former governor urged voters to oppose a Florida ballot initiative in November that would have approved medicinal use of the drug.

An Amtrak train was involved in a crash with a truck in Halifax County, North Carolina, forcing the derailment of the passenger train and sending an 40 passengers to area hospitals.
The incident occurred on Monday afternoon just south of the state’s border with Virginia, when a northbound Amtrak train collided with a tractor-trailer that had apparently become stuck at an intersection near US Highway 301, authorities told WRAL News.
Photographs reportedly from the scene of the crash show at least one derailed train car, and area law enforcement say as many as three cars may have come off the tracks.
Passenger Ted Camarata told WRAL that the train was the Amtrak Carolinian, traveling from Raleigh, NC to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
“There was a massive jerk and we were kind of thrown forward a little bit, and the train came to a sudden stop,” another passenger, Charlotte Story, told the news network. “I couldn’t tell you if it was trying to slow down or not. There was no whistle. It came completely out of the blue.”
Eyewitness Amber Keeter told WRAL that she was behind the tractor-trailer before the crash occurred, and believes the truck had been trying to negotiate a turn near the intersection for around 15 minutes before the collision.
“It wasn’t so much they got stuck,” she said. “They could not make the turn. They were too long.”
Halifax County Sheriff Wes Tripp told The Daily Herald that injuries were reported, but were not believed to be life-threatening.
“We are relieved that there are no fatalities reported at this time, and our thoughts and prayers are with those who were injured,” Transportation Secretary Tony Tata said in a statement offered to WRAL.
“Safety is always our top priority, and we continue to urge everyone to use extreme caution and stay alert when crossing our railroad tracks.”
Later in the day, the Associated Press reported that 40 people had been injured, citing officials.
