What is Tanya? Who Wrote Tanya? What is 19 Kislev?
The Tanya is a book that explains in practical terms how every Jew can actualize his or her spiritual potential. It is the foundational text of the Chabad school of Chassidism. The Tanya was authored by the first Chabad Rebbe, Rabbi Schneur Zalman of Liadi. He wrote Tanya as a practical manual that would substitute for personal consultation with him. The 19th of Kislev is the anniversary of the release of Rabbi Schneur Zalman from Czarist imprisonment in 1798. It has been celebrated ever since as the "New Year of Chassidism."
